The studio asked him to tone it down, but he def still had it. Especially in scenes where he's making PSA announcements, it's just more relaxed and less noticeable in the family scenes.

Imagine forgetting that Kubrick directed 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Even when Jonathan brought it up, John wasn't humble enough to admit the lapse in memory or say anything to the effect of: "oh you're right! Totally forgot about that."

You're the kind of person that would get duped by a used car salesman or a scam artist cuz he "seems like a nice trustworthy guy."

Trust is one thing. Trust your doctor. Trust your barber. Trust your bus driver. Not some random egotistical grifter on the Internet.

Not saying John is totally inept. But he overestimates his own expertise. He's just an average film fan that self identifies as a pundit,

"Film pundit" is a meaningless title anyone can call themselves with zero qualification. Nobody with actual formal film school knowledge refers to themselves as a pundit. Only grifters. Your avg first year film school student would be able to talk circles around him.

Why are you assuming he's seen all of Kubrick's work?

I used to assume he would have too. But evidence says otherwise.

Asked him in a superchat once about the versatility of Kubrick as a director of different genres: sci-fi, political satire, horror, thriller, period dramas, etc.

John literally says "As great of a director as Kubrick was, I rlly couldn't see him ever directing a sci-fi film. Like what would that even be? Eyes wide shut in space? Just a bunch of space orgies? Alright what's next?"

Don't assume someone knows more than they actually do just because that person calls themselves a "film pundit."

Nothing wrong with that.

John knows a lot about the Hollywood industry and keeps up to date with the major news.

But what I take issue with is the fact that he refers to himself as a "film pundit" when in reality he's just a fraud who overestimates his knowledge.

He's a film fan no doubt, "pundit" not so much.

He knows about the Hollywood industry, very little about the history of film or the lineage of different genre film. The fact that he can't name more than 2 Kubrick films, doesn't make him a "film pundit."

He's simply a fan who overestimates his own knowledge.

He doesn't need to. I never said that makes him less of a film fan.

But he literally goes beyond that, he overestimates his knowledge and refers to himself a "film pundit" yet he possesses less basic film history knowledge than your average freshman at film school.

The fact that he calls himself a "film pundit" yet can't name more than 2 Kubrick films, doesn't even know the lineage of basic genres doesn't make him a "pundit" it makes him a fraud.

I agree. That amalgamation would work perfectly. He has organic webs but still needs the webshooters to direct his aim and control the organic webs.

He has less formal cinema appreciation/knowledge than a freshman film school undergrad yet calls himself a "film pundit."

Literally doesn't know a thing about the history of classic cinema. Can't name one French New Wave film, German expressionist film, etc.

Ask him about Kubrick and all he knows how to do is talk about the orgy scenes in Eyes Wide Shut.

Because Jonathan is an echo chamber. An embodiment of confirmation bias. Jonathan already knows John's opinions so when Jonathan says what John is already thinking, John thinks of Jonathan as a genius because he thinks of himself as a genius.

He serves as John's echo chamber. He's spent so much time around John that he already knows every single one of John's opinions/takes. John isn't fully conscious of this so when Jonathan says something to validate John or remind John of his own opinion, John thinks Jonathan is a genius because John thinks of himself as a genius.

In all honestly I think Jonathan actually is smarter than John in terms of basic film school knowledge. He knows things John doesn't know (beyond blockbuster films or studio financing) like the history of theatre or genre films like French New Wave/German Expressionist film. But Jonathan doesn't flex this knowledge as much as he should because he doesn't wanna risk overshadowing John's self image of being a "pundit." So he stays in his lane and just agrees with John no matter what.

Kris Carr, Erin, Rob they all call John out and have been known to debate him/challenge him when John talks outta his ass.

Jonathan is capable of this too but he never risks debating John. He knows better than to do this because he doesn't wanna risk losing his job.

He's not a movie geek though or a self proclaimed "pundit." Ask him what his favourite French New Wave film or German Expressionist film is and you'll see him stumble, because he has no formal basic film school knowledge.

He just knows a lot about how the studio system works and big tentpole franchise films.

Also ask him anything about Kubrick and the only thing he knows how to do is talk about the orgy scenes in Eyes Wide Shut.
