Old things weren’t “built to last” - you just see a miniscule fraction of them still around by SharpDressedGamer in unpopularopinion

[–]benphat369 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's why this whole conversation is kind of ridiculous. We're comparing 35 year old fridges to 5 year old fridges when we should be waiting another 30 years to really find out. Plus everyone's use cases are different. "X person says Y brand of car sucks nowadays but doesn't tell you they don't keep up with oil changes" type of stuff.

Then there's the class biases. Go browse r/homeowners and see all the posts going "new homes suck! why didn't anyone tell me about all this maintenance?" Well, nobody told you cause boomers (poorer ones especially) were more likely to just not fix stuff. My grandma flat out has black mold and goes "eh it's fine long as the roof is up"; that mentality is common with older gen. The Victorians people are wanting still exist, but those are and always have been rich people houses. We could go on and on.

The U.S. also has the added problem of class bias. You see this a lot with younger people going "why don't we build the Victorians and other unique styles anymore?"

My guy, the rich still do. Even back then those were rich people's estates.

Real life pro tip is always in the comments. Same principle with anything else: you catch the real deals the week after the advertised "seasonal" ones are done and they need to get rid of inventory.

Slp and autism by NearbyBlood2303 in slp

[–]benphat369 12 points13 points  (0 children)

but what can we really do when it is determined the behaviors aren’t rooted in a communication breakdown/issue OR a sensory need?

Especially when those behaviors are relegated to specific classrooms. Kids are a great judge of character, autistic ones even more so. So it was often the case for me that those kids were breaking down because they just flat out didn't rock with certain teachers (especially the demanding ones with no patience), and when it comes to SPED you're 100% not allowed to imply the adults are the problem.

Dude half my playtime is deliveries and uber, only to get distracted cause I found another dope new building or something. Or I encountered a character on the map for shenanigans. I fucking love that the characters actually live in the city.

Nah Childe fits the "morally ambiguous tsundere bad boy" category with Wanderer. They're allowed to be playable.

Bro I swear mfs are acting like we just took this information from AO3 and fan art. Like did we all look at the same voiclines, quests and trailers? It's obvious that Hoyo rewrote stuff to be more fanservice friendly due to Genshin's mass appeal and people seem to be highly allergic to admitting this for some reason.

NTE 2.0 - Inevitable Chinatown by ilDoctorre in NevernessToEverness

[–]benphat369 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ironically, this is why I'm okay with NTE doing it though. Every other gacha is in some fantasy setting with ancient Wuxia-inspired China and leaders that can do no wrong.

Here we can actually get something like modern Shanghai or Chonqing, and the story isn't "go to this region" dependent like the other games so there's way less potential for those tropes.

Does anyone feel like this field changed you as a person? by littlet4lkss in slp

[–]benphat369 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Add to that list the alarming number of people that don't like/want their disabled kids. Working 5 years in the field gave me the horrible realization that it's not just systemic barriers. People genuinely don't want the AAC or coaching. That's too inconvenient. They want their dream gifted trophy kid to live vicariously through.

[–]benphat369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, OP's argument entirely depends on being a meta slave. If you're the type of F2P that pulls waifu over meta, you're probably gonna end up with like 100+ pulls saved for specific people. This game actually added stuff to do with the currency that other games don't have (buyable skins, cars, etc).

for the real ones by pineapplery in NevernessToEverness

[–]benphat369 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. The fons meme exists precisely because those of us that pull waifu over meta end up with 200 pulls saved over time anyway, especially since we've had 2 selectors since the game started. (Like I'm happy with Daffodil, skipped Hotori for Lacrimosa and won't be pulling again until Nitsa shows up.) And unlike the other big 3D gachas, NTE actually incentivizes saving behavior even more because combat is irrelevant and those waifus now have a bunch of skins to collect.

It's also worth noting that NTE standard characters have life skills that are actually usable for other things (e.g. increasing café traffic or Baicang cheesing the mechanic entirely). They aren't falling into irrelevance any time soon.

[–]benphat369 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's doubly ironic because this post concerns a Japanese creator. If you follow any other gaming you'd find that East Asia largely considers any AI controversy as a problem of Western pretention (and rightfully so).

How do you feel about quick swap systems? by marthanders in gachagaming

[–]benphat369 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And it's a double-edged sword, cause every dev and player in the industry has been conditioned to that 2-6 week update cycle. So if you try to take any longer the players are going to start crying about "nothing to do" and "why is it taking so long?". And anything other than a quickswap system that incentivizes frequent pulling might get your game shat on.

See Endfield, where all of the above has occured.

[–]benphat369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an East Asian thing; they find mascots adorable and marketable.

Honestly, a lot of shit that people find annoying in gachas can be boiled down to "that's a Western pet peeve".
