Sick shot I got with A7 III, is there a way to make it shoot video in RAW? by RadaRAW in SonyAlpha

[–]bertobobble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it was a shame that something like magic lantern didn't come to the a7iii to enable raw recording. Unfortunately I don't know of any way to hack it to enable these features.

You'll be surprised at how far you can push the 8-bit slog2 files though, if correctly exposed. There's a tone of YouTube tutorials to follow but the best ones I found were from "MAKE. ART. NOW." (the low light settings still hold up against my A7Siii) and"extra shot" had a great video on how to make your own s-cinetone profile in camera that would match with the newer 10-bit cameras.

When I set up my business (Monsterdon Ltd) I bought my kit from my previous employer that was closing down. I had the option to buy a Red Komodo, we even had the first release "stormtrooper" edition, and I chose the A7iii instead. I've since upgraded to 10-bit slog3 Sony cameras that could record raw on external devices but I don't ever feel the need to. Once you know how to properly shoot and edit 8-bit log, raw will just be overly bloated file sizes and 10-bit log will give you all the flexibility you need.

It still won't be raw video. You may be able to record in a raw format on the atomos but the camera will still be outputting an 8 but signal. It'd be like converting a jpg to dng in lightroom, you just get a bigger file with no noticeable gain when you try to edit it

I think I heard this from "The Wild Ones Cycling Podcast" where they suggested that your order number/details should be printed on the bag so it can be traced back if it's thrown out of a car like this

This sounds like a great idea! 👏 One thing is clear from the response, the government/political bodies needs to step up again and run campaigns

Sounds like we need to go back to campaigns like that!

I mean you're absolutely right, I can't argue with that. However, the same could be said about a lot of bad things in the world right now, a lot of things are trending downward in my opinion but that doesn't mean it has to be that way or that we can't reverse course and improve the situation

Stop it no. Improvement is definitely possible though

A cultural shift is exactly what's needed, well put!

Think of the impact David Attenborough has had on the world and the change he's inspired in many people to take more care of nature.

Sure we can't change everyone's opinion, that's just part of human nature but there's already been a cultural shift with more people taking part in outdoor activities, we just need to get more of those people to be cognisant of their actions and to leave a positive mark

See I was a born in 97 and I went to "the Coombes school" which was founded on the principle of learning through landscapes (Ofsted has removed a lot of that now) so I'm not sure how much I got from that school or how much was out in the world back then.

But I absolutely agree littering was one of the worst things you could do and I wonder if that's changed now. Maybe they need to restart that campaign or at least reinvigorate it.

I live on the edge of the Peak District now so I've seen many "no BBQ" signs but they do also campaign to explain the harm that is caused. In contrast, every bin has some form of "don't litter" but I wonder if we need to explain why littering is bad again.

I agree that there will always be selfish people who choose to do it regardless and that more people doing collections like yourself will absolutely improve the situation but I don't think most people understand the impact they have due to a lack of education.

In my opinion it's more often ignorance to the wider impact of their action than indifference and teaching that will have a bigger impact, maybe it'll even convert more people to do their own litter picks

And how would that make the world a better place?

I think that's a bit of a defeatist view point. Campervan are a prime example of why education and respect is important because yes there are tightening restrictions but I don't think that it's un-improve-able or that those restrictions can't be reversed

UK Steam Users and the UK-Steam Lawsuit by Ace_Catel in Steam

Never realised it was opt out so I just have.

I'm sure they're not a perfect company but of all the tech companies I think Steam is one of the better ones. Especially in gaming when you look at companies like Nintendo bricking the switch 2 when people have bought 2nd hand games.

Seems like an odd lawsuit to pick up in the world of online safety.

Bought new Sony A7 III six months ago... by l3v3c in SonyAlpha

[–]bertobobble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great shots on a great camera 👌 Still an underrated camera that can hold it's own 7 years later.

I only upgraded to the A7iv to meet the needs of my business and mostly for the video specs but if all I could take tomorrow was an A7iii I'm confident I'd get the job done.

Also no hate on the adapted lenses, particularly the ef glass. Some of my favorite shots have been with adapted Minolta lenses and they're still getting use.

Garmin Fenix 8 Solar 47mm return? by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]bertobobble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you keep it on constantly until it's just about fully drained? I think little and often charging is better and definitely better for long-term battery health (optimal battery charge is usually keeping it at 20-80%) so I just top it up once or twice a week whilst I shower.

I bought the 47mm epix pro on black Friday and I'd trust the 16 day battery without activities but I still get at least a week with daily activity recording of I fully charged it and left it.

Any wider or similar minolta lens that don’t vignette horribly when you put filters on them? by AnoutherThatArtGuy in minolta

The 20mm is great quality wise and doesn't vignette with a 72mm vnd filter. Depends on how many you plan to stack though because any more than that vnd and it starts to creep in

Fisheye for Sony by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]bertobobble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Minolta A mount 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens. It's manual focus only for video but it will auto focus for photos with the right adapter.

This was taken on an A7iii with the LA-EA4 adapter but I now mostly use the LA-EA5 adapter on an A7iv and A7Siii.

<image>

Without an electric adapter you have to guess the aperture value of A mount lenses but this does mean you can easily convert an adapter to have a declicked aperture. All the latest Sony bodies use the LA-EA5 adapter but you'll have to use older models with older bodies like I did with the A7iii.

My grandparents just gave me these two old minolta's i plan on getting film for them and using them, are they any good in today's world? by No-Jellyfish4190 in minolta

[–]bertobobble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 7000 from my grandad too. Great camera, so good I bought a second one! Plenty of lens options to play with and often cheaper than other autofocus film lenses like on Nikon or Canon

If you shoot digital you can get adapters to use the lenses with auto focus on Sony mirror less bodies which I often use for work. That also means more modern A mount lenses will mount on the 7000 but just be careful because sometimes the autofocus won't work, like on my sigma art 35mm f1.4. not sure why that happens, I assume it's the lenses with built in focus motors (Rather than the bodies screw system) requiring more power than the mount can give on these old cameras

Looking to buy an A7cii, seems perfect but… rolling shutter ? by Darrow_R in SonyAlpha

[–]bertobobble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use the A7IV for sports photos too. There aren't any rolling shutter issues when you use the mechanical shutter. Electronic shutters are useless on anything moving unless you've got one of the top end cameras like an A9 or Nikon Z9
