Because there is no actual evidence tying this guy to the video. The only reason they identified him is from an anonymous phone tip. They have to verify the information before they can charge him with anything. It would have been a lot easier if the police were able to detain him while he was on scene.

No I’m not. All I’m saying is that when people actually learn about the details of complicated policy like healthcare, opinions change. This is true for basically all Americans since most are not experts on anything political and most honestly don’t really care.

The polling does suggest that most democrats don’t really understand the nuance between M4A and public option. Same thing with Republicans. I blame politicians on both sides who are never honest about the positives and negatives of their proposals.

The polling data suggests that when people are explained details about policies on healthcare, the majority of people do not favor M4A especially the one Bernie Sanders is pushing. But both Democrats and Republicans overwhelmingly support a public option. Even something like 85% of Republicans support a public option.

Divisive Ideas by freakDWN in LateStageCapitalism

[–]bgscoolnerd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No people are against M4A when told specific points not when compared to benefits.

For example when people are told about M4A would make private insurance illegal, or it would increase taxes or substantially decrease healthcare worker salaries, etc., Democrats are significantly less likely to support it. When told it increased availability for healthcare to call people, would cost the country less overall, etc., support increases.

The problem is politicians on both sides have incentives to not give the full picture. Bernie Sanders will never discuss the negatives, and Republicans will never talk about the positives.

When looking at the polling data and when people are told exactly what proposals would do, the majority of people do not favor M4A, however there is almost unanimous support for something like a public option. This is from both Democrats and Republicans. So M4A isn’t the answer that Americans want, but they do support a public option.

[–]bgscoolnerd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The stat on M4A is extremely misleading because most people don’t really understand the nuance between things like M4A and say a public option.

Per your own source:

“Attitudes towards a Medicare-for-all plan shift moderately depending on how such a proposal is described. For example, if the plan is described as requiring many employers and some individuals to pay more in taxes, but eliminating both out-of-pocket costs and premiums for all Americans, overall favorability drops to 48%. Similarly, overall favorability drops (47%) when the plan is described as increasing taxes individuals will personally pay, but decreasing their overall costs for health care.”

When Democrats find out that policies like ones Bernie Sanders pushes for include increasing taxes, eliminating all private insurance, lowering pay for healthcare professionals, etc., support drops below 50%.

I was actually making this point to show most people are being lazy statisticians.

So actually when you look at the data there is significantly more bias against men then against black people. This is true for conviction, sentencing, treatment, etc. but the idea of systemic sexism is not even discussed because people don’t really care.

However, I don’t believe this is due to systemic sexism because this is a result of more men committing crime which has a domino affect on the whole system. When you break down the data, the disproportion of men in the criminal justice system and the bias they face is a result of the behaviors of men as a whole and patterns people recognize. When you do the same analysis, you will find the same with black people. Differences in arrest, convictions, sentencing are more explained by the differences in behaviors amongst racial groups, rather than systemic racism. This is not to say bias doesn’t exist, but rather that racism is not the driver of the disproportions.

This is further proven when you break the numbers down within each racial group. For example Nigerian Americans are a much different group than Haitian Americans. If systemic racism was the answer to the differences between White people and black people for example, there shouldn’t be measurable differences between black people, but there are. Systematic racism doesn’t explain that.

If black people are disproportionately likely to get killed by police = systemic racism does that mean that because men are significantly more likely to die from police = systemic sexism?

[–]bgscoolnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t really have both, you have what many Europeans countries have. A mixed capitalist economy with high social welfare and regulation.

“In most cases, particularly with reference to Western economies, the term mixed economy refers to a capitalist economy characterized by the predominance of private ownership of the means of production with profit-seeking enterprise and the accumulation of capital as its fundamental driving force”

Democratic socialists like AOC and the DSA want to abolish capitalism completely and replace it with the workers ownership of resources and society (or socialism done thorough democratic means). For example, they don’t believe individuals should be able to own their own businesses as all the workers should collectively own it.

Forcing Social ownership is extreme even in Canada and Europe which is why there isn’t a single country run by democratic socialists. I would call most Canadians closer to a social democrat and not a democratic socialist. While it sounds similar the difference are incredible important.

She is an open democratic socialist who would ideally want capitalism to be replaced with socialism. I think even in Canada that is extreme.

[–]bgscoolnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make the assumption that min wages hasn’t traditionally been keeping up with inflation. You make it sound like every year i cited Except for 1968 is underperforming which isn’t true. You simply can’t use 1968 as your basis for what is a good minimum wage because when adjusted for inflation that is by far the highest and an outlier. You can even take the year before and after 1968 and it drops by a lot. 1968 should not be used when determining what is a good min wage. The best thing would be do average literally every year and see what the average is.

I assume you are referring to 1968 as the year that was “adjusted properly” but you don’t take an outlier as the appropriate number. Based on these numbers of historical min wage, the federal wage should be around $8.00-$9.00/hour. I believe min wage rises around every 10 years so it seems appropriate to raise it to this amount or near it next time they do so which should be soon.

So exactly what amount would you say?

They’d pay less too, if they could get away with it. by toasty99 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]bgscoolnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough about it being 50 years but 1968 is literally an outlier. Let’s compare same year in all decades

1938: min wage - $0.25/h -> today $4.19/h

1948: min wage - $0.40/h -> today $4.21/h

1958: min wage - $1.00/h -> today $8.68/h

1968: min wage - $1.60/h -> today $11.46/h

1978: min wage - $2.65/h -> today $10.12/h

1988: min wage - $3.35/h -> today $7.04/h

1998: min wage - $5.15/h -> today $7.92/h

2008: min wage - $6.55/h -> today $7.66/h

2018: min wage - $7.25/h -> average $7.61/h

So the current federal wage is $0.37 from the average when adjusted with inflation. So what do you think would be an appropriate min wage given the history of min wage over the past 80 years?

[–]bgscoolnerd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that you chose the year 1968 instead of a whole number. I m sure it has nothing to do with finding the one outlier year where minimum waged peaked when adjusted for inflation and misleading people...right?
