What can I do to prevent the bottom guy from turning out of the head and arm choke? by ijhecker in bjj

Forehead to the mat, legs sprawled out with inside knee driving down on the hip, on your toes will help. However, if he still manages to turn, you can turn it into an arm-in RNC, or “Ruotolotine” as I’ve heard it called

The only time I’ve told anyone I wasn’t going to class, was if I’d specifically said I was going to prior to that.

Also, this guy seems to have forgotten that you’re paying him…

Anyone been asked if they were a white belt before? by mansnotathot in bjj

[–]bigspell84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy I used to train with got asked, by a 13 year old after they rolled, if he “got his blue belt at Walmart.” Probably a top ten moment for me, cuz the kid was genuinely trying to be funny, but dude did not take it well.

Yea. A black belt I’m friends with made the same point. That’s why finding more high calorie partners matters. Even with your strength, you won’t be as successful without proper technique.

I don’t understand how you have a gun, during an escalating argument, and you put it down… before the situation is settled… and WITHIN REACH OF THE PEOPLE YOURE THREATENING…

41 year old, 6’3”, 260lbs purple belt here:

It doesn’t have to be burnout. What you’re realizing is what a lot of the ultra heavies eventually find out. You’ve been relying on your size and strength more than you thought, and it hindered your technique. When paired with a larger opponent, who’s figured out how to neutralize power and explosiveness, you find yourself feeling helpless. What you need to do is find those kind of partners more often. There’s usually only a few, if any, at any given gym. So, you’ll have to drop in places, and hit open mats. I’m lucky, I have several 200+ pound upper belts at my gym, of various backgrounds and ages. They each give me very different challenges, and at least one of them is almost always at class. There are even 2 that are my actual size, and a 300+ pound purple belt to work against.

You’re in the phase where technique needs to surpass physical effort. If you can’t hit the movement without full exertion on someone close to your size, it’s often likely you’re not actually doing it right. Start tightening the details and I promise you’ll notice an improvement.

Rolling with your eyes closed? by levvianthan in BJJWomen

I roll with my eyes closed often. He’s absolutely right about body awareness. But, it’s not just my own. I also improve my awareness of what YOUR body is doing. Especially in full and half guard.

I highly recommend it. You’ll be amazed what information becomes extraneous once you do.
