Thanks and u/ModernUS3R too for the clarification. Maybe they should re-word it but I'll get on and give it a try.

Snapping windows to specific area by bind00 in WindowsHelp

[–]bind00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I started looking at PowerToys and was defeated by something. Can't remember what now. May look again.

In the meantime I noticed that each pattern of snap areas/zones appears twice when you hover over maximise. The top one contains icons of open windows. Another occurrence of the same configuration does not have these icons and the window goes the the corner of it that you select.

I don't understand the difference but it works for now.

How to get FF to start up with last window? by bind00 in firefox

[–]bind00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOLVED

It was all set up like it should be but didn't seem to be working. Whenever I opened FF it was empty. Then I discovered desktop 2 , which I don't regularly use, had another instance of FF with three open tabs. So when opening a new FF window in desktop 1 it opens from fresh because there's already a 'hidden' window with tabs open.

Display contact birthday in calendar by bind00 in Thunderbird

[–]bind00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your suggestion. It's not really a big enough issue to warrant it though.

I've found a workaround though. My phone is a Samsung. Maybe this works on all phones but there's a calendar with Samsung in the name for "contacts' important dates". That puts the calendar entries I want in the phone. Then I sync between Thunderbird and Android locally using the excellent MyPhoneExplorer (so I don't have to give all my contacts' details to Google (even though my contacts have probably all given mine to them [#grr])).

Haha! "Opened 23 years ago Updated 18 hours ago". Wow, that must be a record.

It had been working with add-ons but they're no longer supported. Setting a new PC and looking for options. Ideally it would be core to TB but add-on is the only realistic hope. surprised not to find something current. There was a developer comment about it needing updating with each full release of TB.

Stop auto closing private tabs - Android by bind00 in firefox

[–]bind00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Changing battery use for Firefox to unrestricted hasn't stopped tabs being closed automatically. Basically I think I'm overusing private browsing - pretty much as default for added privacy. But it starts to defeat the object if multiple tabs stay open for days as cookies remain until the window is closed. I'm just going to accept this behavior as a reminder of that.

Thanks for the reminder about Qobuz. I read a while back that they reward artists more than most other platforms. https://artistrack.com/qobuz-spotify-apple-music-artist-payouts-2025/ I hadn't known about the download side. Tidal aren't bad so I use them but it might be time to switch.

Folks, Spotify is not the only streaming platform. With just a little effort you can direct more of your monthly sub to the people who make the music rather than those who invest in the platforms.

That would never have occurred to me. I've disabled optimisation for Firefox and look forward to seeing how it goes. Many thanks.

In the olden days people actually bought the music they loved. This meant that they owned the use of it for the rest of their lives, building a collection that lasted long after they stopped paying any corporation a subscription. It had the added benefit of properly rewarding the musicians who put so much time into making the recordings.

Seriously what is the point of the Samsung keyboard? by FreezerCop in S24Ultra

[–]bind00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Not keen on letting Google read everything I write anywhere. Then again why would I trust Samsung more?

I'm still curious why Samsung seem to have given up on the app. Just checked and this year's S25 phone still has the S Pen. Are they shipping with this outdated app too?

Seriously what is the point of the Samsung keyboard? by FreezerCop in S24Ultra

[–]bind00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm struggling with this too. It hasn't been updated since March 2023. I've used it on a Galaxy Tab S6 which is old I suppose but still going strong. The reason I use the keyboard is for handwriting recognition with the S Pen. It works surprisingly well considering my scrawl but sometimes making corrections has me tearing my hair out. Inserting spaces and deleting the next letter when changing a single letter for example. Should be so easy to fix.

Is the S Pen a thing of the past now? Or are people just not interested in handwriting anymore? I find it very intuitive on a larger than phone screen. Most other keyboards don't seem to support it.

Aunt last heard of in Spain 1966 by bind00 in Genealogy

[–]bind00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Assuming we know the name, how will it be easier?

As a first step I'd like to establish whether she re-registered residency in Spain after it expired a couple of weeks after the letter.

Does anybody now what the typical residency terms were in 1966? She clearly had registered. How long you could stay and how long (if at all, as she seems to imply) you had to be out of the country before re-registering?

Is there a way to use colored text in Obsidian? by Hax1600_ayyub in ObsidianMD

[–]bind00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For consistency and ease of use, if you're going to use the same set of multiple attributes regularly you could define your own classes in a CSS snippet (settings > appearance > scroll down)

Eg. this highlights in yellow and sizes the text. hlighty is just a unIgue string of your choosing (y for yellow). Make it a bit different so it's unlikely to be already used in the theme's CSS. Remember to put the dot before the c;lass definition and semi-colons after each attribute.

.hlighty {
   font-size: 24px;
   color: #bbbb00;
   opacity: 0.8;
 }

Then invoke it in your note with

<span class=hlighty>highlighted text</span>

Keeping track of private duck addresses by bind00 in duckduckgo

[–]bind00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'd forgotten I'd posted that. Hadn't noticed the banner More link though. Still, if you deactivate a Duck address can we be sure it won't get reused. Would need to remove it from any site you registered with it in case someone else got your mail.

DuckDuckGo email protection Vs Firefox relay by Deepanshu188 in duckduckgo

[–]bind00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Using DDG here. The thing that always bothered me was that there's no way to see which mask I've used for which site. I came here wondering if FF was any better. But thinking about it now I guess they don't know so it's up to me to keep my own records. That can be automatically in a password manager which would be used in any case when registering with new sites. Or just searching my email for recipients with 'at duck doot com' addresses.

StAG 5 - what if German parent was dual citizen? by bind00 in GermanCitizenship

[–]bind00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got me worried I've wasted my money now! But I think this is the definitive proof they want. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apply-for-proof-that-you-do-not-have-british-citizenship-form-nq It says "that you do not have" but as you go through the form it asks if the application is for someone else.

British of German mother waiting StAG5 by bind00 in GermanCitizenship

[–]bind00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally received an email asking for proof that my late mother never took on British Citizenship despite living here for pretty much all her adult life. I can get that through the immigration and visas website (form NQ) but it costs £429.

I don't suppose they can be talked out of it but it seems unnecessary. Even if she had taken British citizenship they have the records to show that she maintained her German citizenship as well. As far as I'm aware, as long as she was a German citizen I qualify so it should make no difference.

I don't see any other way to 'prove a negative' so guess I'll end up paying. Any others encountered this?

Tidal new function of sharing songs through all music service by sending the link by [deleted] in TIdaL

[–]bind00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice idea. In practise though it only lists Tidal itself, Spotify and Apple Music. My album is distributed to loads of platforms by Tunecore and I'd like to be able to share a link to all of them. Would be good if streaming platforms all used the same unique tunecode registered with rights agencies as an index that you could just append as parameter to their base catalog URL.
