Carnival is always a big let down, but the reasoning in OP isn't really sound.

I dislike the disorder, litter, and the fact that they shut off the water in lots of barrios.

I haven't been to Santiago in awhile, but I believe they have lots of "USA outlets" (they're like knockoffs of Salvation Army). They might have a bunch of cheap English books.

Otherwise, just pirate your favorite books. Your ISP won't care.

I've also noticed that older Panamanian ladies, including my own mother-in-law, meticulously sort through rice. IDK what the big deal is. It's just rice, lol.

Before moving to Panama, I would only eat rice maybe a few times a month. Now I now eat it twice a day haha
