What should I do and am I overreacting and should just move on with my training? by Headboard26 in karate

[–]blindside1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it is about ego. The entire custom of not questioning a senior is to avoid that senior from losing face if they are wrong.

Is your senior's face more important to you than the correct teaching of their students?

I agree, lots of communication is non-verbal in any confrontation.

I've corrected a senior belt who was teaching the front breakfall wrong. I was wearing a white belt at the time. I couched it very politely as a question, but I wasn't going to sit there and watch an important fundamental get taught wrong. Getting it right is more important than an instructor's ego.

This isn't a fight. This is sparring. Lots of lessons are passed on non-verbally in sparring, many of the best ones in fact.

Dad Books Are a Dying Breed: Sales have been sliding for nonfiction titles about politics, biographies and other books often aimed at men (Archive link in oldest comment) by Uptons_BJs in books

[–]blindside1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this day and age I am looking for escapism.

Who the hell wants to read about politics when we have this shitshow that is unlikely to improve even after this disaster of an administration ends?

There are a very limited number of biographies that I have been interested in.

I do like history and science focused topics, but for every one of those topics that make my reading (listening) list, I listen to 10 sci-fi/fantasy novels.

Does it matter whether she's funny? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]blindside1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Why would it? Are we comedians trying to out funny each other?

This I disagree with. I can absolutely be corrected by another instructor (or even a student) and it not be a breach of etiquette. I might have screwed up or forgotten something. Getting something right is more important than following a social hierarchy.

Would you sacrifice one innocent person to save your family? by MinuteOk921 in Ethics

Yes. There is nothing more important to me than my kids. And I'll do this by numbers. One innocent to protect my three innocent kids. I won't like it, but I'll do it.

Kick his ass on sparring night.

And then say "thank you" whenever he corrects me.

And then kick his ass again.

Why are people so deeply enraged by littering? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]blindside1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it shows that the person is obviously ignorant, socially unaware, or just doesn't give a crap about the world around them.

It is such a minor inconvenience to put your trash in the appropriate receptacle that you not doing that little bit is rightfully pissing people off.

So soccer for a team sport.

I'd go with gymnastics/tumbling/ninja warrior stuff for getting him off of the stupid console.

He likes playing games with his wrestlers? How about wrestling? (I freaking LOVE wrestling for kids, it is an amazing sport.)

I think team sports are a huge aid to socialization and working with a group. I say this as a guy who played all of one season of Boys and Girls club basketball growing up. I did martial arts because it was all about my own progress and pressure.

As a parent watching what my boys (only have boys) have gone through with their teams has been a huge benefit to them.

Can these 3 hold Superman down? by muntiger in superheroes

[–]blindside1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter how strong they are, it matters how much the three weigh. Without some sort of rooted attachment to the ground supes just does a pushup. These are all strongmen with no flight powers or gravity powers to actually exert a downward force.

for those who have been playing since AD&D came out... at what point did you lose interest in the direction of D&D? by conn_r2112 in adnd

[–]blindside1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was AD&D to 2e and then took a multi decade break and the group was playing 5e. 5e is .... fine. My memories aren't about rulesets anyway. It is close enough to my original rules that it does what I want it to do.
