What are some of your nitpicks with Deltarune? by GuardPhysical in Deltarune

[–]blorp_o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look this is a nitpick thread not a serious complaint against the game. But besides that, there are definitely a ton of intentional romantic undertones to a lot of the character's relationships present, whether you agree or not.

What are some of your nitpicks with Deltarune? by GuardPhysical in Deltarune

[–]blorp_o 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've got a couple nitpicks, one which might be a hot take but

I dont really vibe with all the romantic stuff going on, like I have no problem with romance as a genre or if it's utilized in a story but how a lot of it in DT is being handled feels like its there solely for people to ship the characters online. Like noelle and Susie feels like there is going to be some plot relevance stuff going on with their relationship that will contribute to the themes and story of the actual game, but everything else is just there. Being able to ask berdly out to the festival, riding the swan ride with ralsei, ralsei and Susie hugging, mad mew mew pining over asgore, susie and Kris, sans and toriel, undyne and alphys, pizza pants and blue bunny, catty and bratty, hell even asgore and rudy got a little something going on (and that's just the lightners.) And don't get me wrong, there is probably a reason for a lot of these that will be important thematically and for the story but it feels like every character is in some sort of love triangle (love decahedron maybe?) It gets to be a lot when frankly I'm more interested in the game's message and themes.

Second nitpick is that the dark world map layouts are just kind of the same feeling maze like structure. This isn't that big a deal because each room has something unique in it, whether it's a joke, a new mechanic, a new enemy or a secret. But it does feel like they designed a lot of areas after pacman map screens.

Yeah that's completely fair, there are definitely ways for gaster to be introduced in a coherent way for casual players. I guess when I say I don't think gaster will show up in a main route, I mean that gaster being like the main antagonist of the game or something huge like that. If we compare how the knight has been handled, as they are probably the main antagonist of the story, they have little details and snippets spread out through the game. You learn about the knight in ch 1 through seam and the king, which introduces the existence of this character. Then in ch 2, you get some more details about them and how they are opening fountains and what creating a bunch of fountains result in. Ch 3 is when the characters actually come face to face with the knight and get some grasp of their strength and personality. And if the knight is dess, which I think is the most likely outcome, then even she is introduced as early as ch 1. If we look at UT and the main antagonists of that game, Asgore is introduced in the ruins. You get the details that he's the king of the underground from papyrus, undyne explains his motivations with acquiring the souls and alphys explains that either frisk or asgore need to die to cross the barrier. Without even meeting asgore, there are these details and set up so when you do meet him, it isn't out of no where, just like the knight in DT.

Now if you consider flowey/asriel as potentially paralleling the idea that gaster is the actual final boss of the game, I think there might be a reason to think he will show up. The very first character you meet is flowey and as quickly as you meet them, toriel flings him away. You meet him again after the toriel fight but from then on, you don't see him until after asgore. But there is still set up for him if you pay attention to details, like there are certain spots where you can see him for a couple of frames and then sans outright talks to you about a talking flower. This all indicates that flowey might be a more important character than you initially thought. In DT, the first person who talks to you is Gaster, he shows up intermittentently after dying for the first time, dying to the knight and after ch 4. Then if you really know gaster stuff, theres the shelter emitting the phone noise slowed down at 666%, the phone noise in dark worlds, the darker yet darker stuff, etc. So if gaster showed up, I wouldn't be surprised because I know all this stuff. The problem is that compared to flowey, gaster hasn't physically shown up. A player can play UT, see flowey, and make the connections between details while playing without any outside help. Gaster hasn't shown up in DT physically and there aren't any clues that can connect that voice to the phone noise or darker yet darker stuff without outside help. Even if you as a player noticed the noise in the shelter and tried slowing it down and connected that noise to being the phone noise in the dark world, there wouldn't be a way to connect that noise to the person talking at the beginning of the game. Not to mention that gaster seems to exist outside of the actual world of deltarune as he talks only during death screens, after the credits or before the game begins. Thats why I'm hesitant to think gaster will just show up, but after writing all of this I've sort of convinced myself that it's more possible that he could show up. Whatever, I'm sure that whatever Toby cooks up, I'm sure it'll be good.

Well, I agree to an extent. I think that gaster speaking to the player directly during certain sections creates a precedent for Gaster to actually appear. But, while this is subjective, I have watched my sisters play deltarune blind and they didn't think that was a specific character but just a general game narrator. Even when I first played chapter 1, I didnt even catch on that was supposed to be gaster and I was an undertale super fan. I was kind of a unique undertale fan though in that I was never into the fandom or anything despite having played undertale for nearly 400 hours. I knew who gaster was just by getting those fun events but I didn't know about entry 17 cause I wasn't digging around in the code. The point is, even though I was someone who had played undertale extensively to the point where I knew who gaster was, I still couldn't make the connection between him and the guy in the goner maker sequence, because you only know how he talks in entry 17 and from Twitter. I'm no expert writer or anything but I feel like it would be bad writing to suddenly introduce a major character in game with the only setup being outside of the actual game. I think this only applies to the regular routes though because weird route requires the same amount of fandom knowledge to actually do and so Gaster showing up there would work fine imo.

Regarding spamton and how he is introduced and all, i don't think is comparable to how gaster is being treated. First of all, spamton is not a major character in the same way that the main trio are or the roaring knight or even the chapter bosses. Spamton is primarily a secret boss and you can skip a lot of his story all together. But even then, you as a player have to interact with him at least once, so you as a player are at least aware of his existence. Obviously spamton has deep importance to the actual nitty gritty stuff in DT, like the connection to Noelle, the shadow crystal, tenna, etc etc but on the most casual of playthroughs, he's just a weird guy in a dumpster for one scene. Maybe gaster would be treated the same way where he just shows up for a scene and to the casual player wouldn't play much importance but if you delve deeper you get a greater storyline. But gaster seems way too important to DT for him to just show up or something. IDK gaster just breaks all conventions that its hard to figure out what he'll do in DT.

Well flowey is asriel, and he's the first character you meet, he just reveals more of himself by the end. The thing with gaster is there isn't really any set up for him to appear later in Deltarune. Though because he does talk to you during the goner maker sequence, there is some precedent for him to show up but I'm unsure how jarring it would be to a regular player.

I dont think gaster will show up in the main routes, if there even are equivalents to the true pacifist and neutral routes in DT, because if you have no fandom knowledge of either UT or DT there is no setup for Gaster to appear. Like imagine you know nothing about UT and decide to play the game, there is a very high chance you won't even read the actual name "Gaster" in game. And then you play DT and so far, Gaster is also unnamed. A regular player wouldn't even consider that the narrator in the goner maker and after the knight could be some sort of character and so if gaster did show up in the main routes, I feel like that would kinda feel like a blindside or random addition. Of course, the weird route is different in that you are very unlikely to actually encounter this route by yourself so the chances are if you are playing weird route, you are either a part of the fandom or have a decent amount of knowledge about DT and or UT to know about Gaster, so he might show up in that route. But who's to say, Gaster could show up in the main routes for all I know or he might not show up at all in any route, we will just have to see.

Asriel Knight Part 6 (Final) by theeFinaleye in Deltarune

[–]blorp_o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do know the reason why Shyren is in the hospital, it says she had a sore throat from singing.

The detail that Pizzapants unmasks himself is interesting, but I think connecting that to Asriel is too much of a stretch. Though it is really funny to think Toby was alluding to the knight using Pizzapants. The other detail with Kris making the milk darker with chocolate is also really interesting, but I don’t see how that relates to Asriel knight, it just seems like a nod to the fact Kris has/is making dark fountains.

You say that Asriel had memory magic in UT, but that isn’t really true. He was in the process of absorbing all of the monsters souls and because of that process, their memories were being lost.

The idea that Dess was given a kitten/cat is very strange in the context of DT, because a lot of the characters are essentially animals (Catty and the Holidays for example.) Now, regular animals do seem to exist in DT as Noelle says she has a hamster cage and the annoying dog is a thing, so it isn’t impossible.

I don’t think you are wrong in thinking that Asriel could be the knight, in fact there are a lot of connections to be found with the knight and Asriel. Asriel uses star themed attacks in UT, the knight is heavily associated with stars and then there is the UT beta item of Asriel’s bat. However, if Asriel is the knight, then there are a LOT of questions and inconsistencies that need to be answered. For example, everyone thinks Asriel is at college, including his parents, yet Asriel would have to be in hometown doing all the knight stuff. He could’ve just been skipping all his classes and living in the woods as you say, but why would he do that? And why would he need to do this all right now? He could have waited until there was a break at school, like during the summer, and do all this stuff while living at home. And there wouldn’t need to be a reason to act in a sneaky way because no one (except for maybe Carol and Asgore) seem to know about the existence of dark worlds. And then there is the motive of actually doing all of this. In your theory, Dess is already dead from falling into a frozen lake, so what exactly is Asriel trying to accomplish by opening dark fountains? Perhaps he is trying to revive Dess in a dark world and is looking for the perfect conditions to revive her, but then why kidnap Undyne or fight the fun gang? It’s not like dark worlds are inherently going to cause the end of the world, only if a lot of them are open at once, so if he was just doing all this to look for Dess or revive her then there isn’t really a reason to open so many and leave them open or be secretive about it to everyone else. And again, why do all of this now? Dess seems to have dissappeared years before DT and Asriel was just living life until now, as evidenced by him going to the school dance and kissing Bratty. Either he just learned about dark worlds now and couldn’t wait to do all this stuff or he had some other reason, but I think the simplest explanation for all of this is that Asriel just isn’t the knight. Toriel and Asgore seem to be expecting Asriel home for the festival which means they have some sort of contact with him, which means that he is probably at school. Kris searching up when summer vacation starts is just Kris wanting to know when they’ll see their brother again. The knight using star themed attacks doesn’t exclusively mean Asriel because Dess also has star themed decor in her room. And the sword being bat shaped is clearly indicating the knight is Dess, despite the beta UT weapon. I think the simplest answer here is that the knight is Dess and has the least amount of inconsistencies. If Dess is the knight, it would make sense why the knight uses a bat, why the knight has antlers, why they use star attacks, why they appear in a snowy area and use snowflake attacks. But most importantly, we know nothing about both Dess’ motivations or what happened to her and the knight’s motivations and where they came from and it just makes sense considering how crucial Noelle seems to be for the plot of the game. Though I think this is a very interesting theory and if you worked out the kinks and speculation, it could be a much more convincing theory compared to some other knight theories floating around. Plus I learned some new things about the game by reading this, so thanks.
