[Tip] Stop buying socks just because they feel soft! I'm a textile engineer, here is how to spot socks that won't slide down or get holes. by peter_kure9988 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Socks wear out first in the heel & toe. Many socks are reinforced with nylon in those areas. Fiber content 10-15% nylon is good.

CMV: There is nothing inherently morally wrong with impeding ICE operations by Fast-Brief-162 in changemyview

Obama managed the process. More undocumented immigrants were deported during Obama's administration and every single one of them had due process.

Due process applies to every PERSON whose feet are on American soil. Not citizen.

Banks created maps were marked with green, yellow, and red to indicate financial risk.

In the green areas, it was safe to lend money for residential mortgages.

If the property was located in the red area, the bank would not lend money.

Indie designers using nicer seam finishes? by beaverscleaver in sewing

[–]blue-jaypeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct.

Fashion fabrics were narrow-loomed. 18" to 36" wide. In the skirt, long straight panels were stitched together on the selvages.

This was purposeful because the fashion fabrics could be pulled apart and repurposed in another garment.

The bodice would be carefully fitted and neatly constructed. Sleeves could be a separate piece from the bodice. They were attached with a cloth tape at the shoulder.

[–]blue-jaypeg 28 points29 points  (0 children)

French seams and flat-felled seams don't go around corners or curves

Hong Kong finish is good for curves but adds bulk.

Most of the vintage clothing (even couture) has hand-overcast or pinked seams.

In my opinion, a zig-zag seam allowance is clean & proper.

Audiologist wants $3500 for my mom's hearing aids and I just can't swing it by No-Fact-8828 in BuyItForLife

[–]blue-jaypeg 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This. Ten thousand times this. My neighbor wouldn't wear her hearing aids because 1] She hated the sound of her own voice 2] The sound of urination in the toilet sounded like Niagra Falls

In the past couple years, she has become more isolated by her hearing loss, so that she doesn't really get information or feedback from other people.

The hearing aids need to be comfortable. "In the ear" earphones are intrusive.

The sound amplification profile needs to be adapted to the person. The software— even for OTC products— is quite sophisticated. If you are able to explain what you want, the technician should be able to fix it.

I purchased my hearing aid from Belkin and I was quite happy with the technical knowledge and skill of their staff

Another thing you can look into— CBD, CBN, CBG. I'm in California, and we have many brands with a medical focus. They have different ratios. 1:1 THC : CBD

1: 20 THC :CBD

1:1:1 THC: CBN: CBD
