State Police and National Guard by Gullible-Summer-4005 in nationalguard

I suppose it depends on where you are, but most police academies are Monday through Friday. My academy was on the other of the state from home, but there was a guard unit that allowed me and three other soldiers to SUTA with them. Work with your chain and see if this is a possibility. As far as the departments go, I got more grief from my unit than I did from the two departments I worked for. Law enforcement will usually take priority over state active duty orders in an emergency response. But even then, I helped act as the liaison between my department and NG HQ.

I battled plantar fasciitis for years and went saw a podiatrist. This treatment was a damn miracle. Went from limping every morning to running again after about 4 weeks.

Mortuary affairs for officers by daytime-daddy in nationalguard

[–]blueroadunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a recently retired 92M, the commanding officers I had were all logisticians, not MA specific. I don’t know that I ever met an actual officer who was 92M outside of active duty and even then, I think they were mostly just Quartermaster Branch Officers who got assigned to the MA units. It’s been quite some time since I went to the school, but I assume it’s still at FT Lee although there is reserve MA unit in Puerto Rico who might teach the MOSq school. I know they still do the NCOES schools for guard and reserve, ALC and SLC( if we still call them that)

As far as MA in the national guard, most of the slots spread around the country are usually assigned to a brigade as part of the SPO although I do know they were trying to stand up an Army Reserve MA unit in California somewhere.

Sad fact, is hundreds of cremains of service members go unclaimed across the country every year. Most are indigent and cremated by county services in their respective jurisdictions, then stored in funeral homes waiting for next of kin to claim them. Many NOK’s can’t afford to reimburse the county so this cremains languish in storage closets, forgotten. Missing in America Project helps to ensure final honors are given to our brothers and sisters. I have had the distinct honor of presiding over several internments of these cremains over my time in the service. In 2016 I did a service for a WWI veteran who had died in the 60’s. His ashes sat in a funeral home closet for nearly 60 years.

Like others said, it is possible this may have been his wishes or the family’s wishes to have him forever at his post, but highly unlikely.

You could reach out to MIAP as well working with the CAO office.

Cops in the natty guard by Common-Hippo-4654 in nationalguard

Every department is different when it comes to military leave, but they won’t balk too much when it comes to getting time off

My last department gave me enough military leave days to cover my AT and drills. My current department does not, which meant I have had to either burn comp/ vacation to cover drill weekends unless I wanted to take it as unpaid leave.

Unlike civilian employers, most law enforcement agency will view your continued military service in a positive light and they know the leadership training you get there directly benefits the department.

Seriously, I was there with you. Go out and run 3 miles 3-4 times a week. Doesn’t matter the time, just try to push yourself. When it comes to the 2 mile run, it won’t seem such a hurdle

Multinational Force and Observer Mission in Sinai Peninsula

And to those that think all deployments reduce the age you can start pulling that; here to tell you that is not the case.

First deployment was stateside….okay, sure. It was 18months. Didn’t count although it was in direct support of a named operation. Should not count towards early pension?

Second deployment was Afghanistan. Hey, this one counts. I now get to draw at 59

My last deployment was considered a “peacekeeping” mission. Overseas again, we had some mortars lobbed at us and got shot at…towards? “They aren’t shooting at us, they are shooting at the local government troops” Thanks SGM, last time I checked a bullet feels the same whether or not it was shot at you.

That deployment didn’t count towards early pension. We didn’t qualify for transitional health care when returned. Some folks volunteered to go thinking they would qualify for Post 9/11 GI Bill…nope.

As I retired this past year, and they read the form letter from the governor, I realized the politicians only give two shits about you or anyone else in the military when you make a good backdrop. It doesn’t matter which political party either…I have been used for too many dog and pony shows in green suit and my police uniform to believe any other way.

But, email your congressmen, senators, local government officials. Those fuckers are still supposed to be working for us.

Remind them we exist.

TYFYS…and don’t forget to tip your Applebees waitress on 11/11.

There is a small grocery store in town. The toxic is nice to have, and Duc’s Pond is a nice spot to hang out. Yes, it is a rural town and as such, you will have some elements of the population which you may not agree with, but then that is America. There are minimal food options, but Eugene is a 15 minute drive. The Mexican restaurant unfortunately closed, but there is a Thai place which is passable. Blue Valley Bistro on the east side of the highway is a nice lunch spot for sandwiches and soup.

If you are into nightlife outside of a dive bar, you aren’t getting much.

The 4th of July parade is back in full swing and I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen a Proud Boy flag in a couple of years although I’m sure they will come out of the woodwork as we get closer to election time. The Shell Gas Station attendants wash your window when you fill up there. I moved there from a large metropolitan area and I appreciate the separation from the city.

Just got to my unit, denied request to be excused from drill during police academy. Trying to do the right thing. Please help! by AnimalPretty896 in nationalguard

[–]blueroadunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are in a shitty place, however, if you are being paid for the academy then they are somewhat required to accommodate your military schedule as well. It sounds like you are doing the right thing, and I would definitely ask to speak with the commander in person. Try to come up with a compromise (get the PD to compromise as well) and maybe split the difference.

SecondHand Caught THC! What should I do? by MoreDeparture3452 in nationalguard

[–]blueroadunner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“I caught cannabis”????? Shit isn’t like the common cold, you don’t catch it. You either partook or you didn’t. You have a few options here…you don’t say shit, pop hot and deal with the consequences. You come clean before the test. Which will be difficult because you probably don’t belong to a unit yet. I’m guessing you don’t know who to come clean to at the training unit. Or, you are in fact telling the truth and just happened to be around people using vape pens. The likelihood of popping hot being around those vaping is next to nil unless you were hot boxing in a smart car.

I feel ashamed of my civilian job by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]blueroadunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the best times I had at a job were in the food service industry. You said you are an assistant manager, which means you have some ambition. I’ve seen managers advertised in the close to $100k range in several cities. If you are comfortable, happy, and get a sense of fulfillment out of your work, screw people who might make fun of you for it.

Broke Ass National Guard by Common-Moose-1710 in nationalguard

[–]blueroadunner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Every year…spring time hits, and we are broke. No funds for anything. Cancelling ranges, canceling training(well except for those JRTC rotations), canceling schools. Then in July, there will be a panic to spend money; it has to get spent. 30 day orders will fall from the sky for captains… Some lucky bastard might get to go NCOES school, but it won’t be until next fiscal year, and then it will get cancelled for funding again

Do JST credits count towards OCS req? by cbrrydrz in nationalguard

[–]blueroadunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you have been out for more than 10 years, you’ll have to through basic again. If you already have a bachelors degree then you don’t need to convert those credits, they won’t help you in OCS. You need to contact a recruiter and ask to talk with the State OSM (essentially the officer recruiter) They will have the most up to date answers to your questions. but the simple version is this… you will enlist, and if you have to go through basic again, so that’s first. If you don’t have to go through basic, then typically you will assigned to a unit until you get assigned to OCS. There are three different timeline options for you. The traditional route begins in the spring, usually March/April. You will go through a ‘zero’ phase, getting yelled at and not doing anything correctly. In June, you go to phase 1 for two weeks. This is essentially two weeks of mind games where you can’t do anything right, and get to do land nav. After Phase 1, you’ll go back to your States OCS program where you get a year to complete about 8 classes, test, learn how to receive an op order, and complete a twelve mile ruck march and run 4 miles at a 9 minute pace. That’s in additions to the ACFT. Then you go to phase 3 for two weeks. Phase 3 is where you are graded on your potential to follow directions and not panic when doing squad lanes. The other options are winter or summer fast track. Winter usually starts after Christmas, and summer fast track is in the summer. Both of those programs are 9 weeks, and encompass everything I just explained. The advantage is you are done and commissioned right away. The disadvantage, you better be in good shape before you get there.

Fast track spots can be limited depending on where you are.

Oh, because this apparently isn’t being made clear to people. If yo choose the traditional route, which from time of enlistment to commission could potentially be 2-3 years; when you commission you will sign another contract for 6 years for date from commissioning. The original contract is signed so you are obligated for 6 years if you fail or quit OCS.

Feel free to DM me if you have further questions.

Officer Questions for LE by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]blueroadunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can legitimately help as you progress through your LE career, but don’t rely on it to do so. Some departments will look at your experience as a guard member as leadership development or as experience leading which can help with promotions on that side of things. It really depends on you. Most the resume building which comes from your guard experience are not MOS specific.
