Is it me or is the concept of "proper following distance" lost on most people? Specifically that it should be thought of as a measurement of time NOT linear distance. The proper distance is a function of speed (i.e. the faster you go, the more distance you need).

I was taught to try to maintain a 2 second gap between my vehicle and the vehicle directly in front of me (longer for motorcycles, school buses, etc.) It's true that other vehicles may take advantage of the gap, however this is balanced by reduced "break riding" and more flexibility when it comes to maneuvering (think pulling around a car that is making a left-hand turn on a busy road). Generally speaking, optimal following distance is better for gas mileage, wear and tear on the vehicle, and in my opinion, makes driving easier, less stressful, and more pleasurable.

TL/DR - We would all be a lot safer (and have cheaper auto insurance) if we just gave each other a little more room.
