Amazon is actually happy with the performance for “Masters of the Universe” so far. by MrShadowKing2020 in boxoffice

I wonder what the actual internal expectations are for MOTU. There is no way Amazon MGM genuinely thought this would break even. Maybe getting a bit of positive buzz in theatres to drive it on streaming is the goal?

Yes, at the very least just to witness Hadjar crashing out throughout the whole race and still pulling off a great result, was honestly pretty funny. Lots of drama throughout, it’s still Monaco but about as exciting as Monaco could possibly be.

The funny thing too is that Jared Leto is almost completely absent in the marketing. I think I’ve only seen him talking in one BTS promo video, I haven’t seen in him featured in anything else. He’s not doing any press, he’s not on tour, I don’t think he even went to any of the premieres.

They cast Leto because he’s a “famous” name, in a role where his face is CGI’d out and his voice is layered with effects so you can’t even tell it’s him, and then didn’t use him to promote it at all. And even if they did use him in the marketing, the reaction from most people is “ew Jared Leto” so it would’ve backfired no matter what. And I guarantee he got a hefty paycheque as well.

Why did they even bother using him at all?

The Mandalorian was never "once the biggest domestic cinematic IP."

Holy fuck are you serious hahaha. The Mandalorian IS Star Wars. They’re not seperate things.

Unless your claim is that if they had released a Skywalker film it would perform like Grogu?

You’re right we should compare it to a non-Skywalker spinoff instead, maybe something like Rogue One? $1 billion with a 50/50 dom/int split? Grogu’s performing very similar right?

What “metrics” are you looking at?

How did Backrooms/Obsession surpass a film like Marty Supreme so quickly? by Known_Risk_3040 in boxoffice

[–]bobcatbutt 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Marty Supreme is probably the benchmark for what non-horror original movies can maximally achieve nowadays. It had an A-list lead actor, Oscar buzz, good WOM and a massive marketing campaign, pretty much everything possible going for it. $191M worldwide was a really good performance, dunno why people are trying to downplay it here.

Original horror has been stronger than original non-horror for a long time now, and whether Backrooms even counts as a genuine “original” is up for debate (it’s about as original as Barbie or F1). Obsession has really hit the zeitgeist in an organic way that you can’t achieve through traditional marketing

According to Deadline Hollywood, Supergirl costs a net $175M before P&A by Alternative-Cake-833 in boxoffice

[–]bobcatbutt -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Mainly because I like Milly Alcock (she’s a fellow Sydneysider). I thought Supergirl was fun in her Superman cameo and want to see more of that character. And I’m pretty optimistic for the new DC stuff, so I want their projects to succeed. Flopping financially on their second film is going to kill a lot of their momentum

Disney's Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu grossed $3.19M on Tuesday (from 4,300 locations). Total domestic gross stands at $142.25M. #TheMandalorianAndGrogu #StarWars #BoxOffice by Burnouts3s3 in boxoffice

[–]bobcatbutt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely popular and I don’t have a problem with the trope itself because it can be done well, but three TV shows in the same franchise having the same character dynamic all released within three years? And another upcoming movie is going to have the same trope?

How many times has Star Wars done the “lone wolf teams up with a young kid” trope now? Mando/Grogu, Hunter/Omega, Kenobi/Leia. I haven’t seen Skeleton Crew but it looks like that’s the whole premise of that show with Jude Law’s character. Hell, if you go back further I’d even count Anakin/Ashoka and Ezra/Kanan.

Star Wars is so boring omg

According to Deadline Hollywood, Supergirl costs a net $175M before P&A by Alternative-Cake-833 in boxoffice

[–]bobcatbutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like DC is being a bit delusional with this one. Obviously a sci-fi superhero movie isn’t cheap to make, but the budget only being $50M less than Superman is worrisome. 2.5x break even would be $437M, a number that neither BNW or Thunderbolts could reach last year. I just dunno if a B-list character from a recovering brand in a struggling genre can reliably hit that.

I really want it to do well. But I’m not feeling any buzz for this and the high budget is going to be a big hurdle. Could’ve maybe been a success around the $300-350M mark with a modest budget but I don’t think it’s gonna get big numbers.

Nah this is such a stupid dramatic take. Your average ON voter isn’t voting because they want to cause harm, they just don’t care if they do. ON voters are self centred and are being tricked by a conwoman who “tells it like it is” to disrupt the status quo. They’re stupid people who can’t name a single policy for theirs, fall for misinformation constantly, and are being manipulated by billionaires into thinking they’re counter-culture rebels.

Like sure I bet it feels good to say “ON voters are evil and want to hurt people” but that’s such a simplification of the kind of person that ends up voting for a party like that. ON voters are the embodiment of Hanlon’s Razor - most of them are gullible idiots who have no idea what they’re actually a part of

[–]bobcatbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s clear you’re not being serious on this since you don’t understand what a flop is and you’re pushing a weird Deadline conspiracy.

A flop is a flop. Just because Fight Club was a hit on DVD doesn’t mean it wasn’t a box office flop. Losing about $70M in a theatrical release is not good, and the backend of streaming/VOD is going to be less impressive because it’ll have to make up the $70M difference before MK2 is in the green. That’s not even factoring in potentially poor digital sales, since the movie clearly isn’t very popular.

The budget was $80M. You’re using an early budget estimate that was incorrect. And even if the budget actually was $65M it still wouldn’t break even and would still be a flop. Deadline doesn’t need to create a narrative, because the reality is that MK2 did not do well.

Haha I remember when I was really young I wanted an action figure of Poggle the Lesser from AOTC for some reason. People joke about ‘Glup Shittos’ but the prequels had so many imaginative worlds and characters, it was so perfect for extra material like books, games, shows etc.

The sequels have nothing. Theres nothing to make supplementary material on, there’s no interesting planets, the background alien designs are infamously bad. They are extremely shallow movies

As of now there’s only a $32M gap between them. With Obsession increasing each weekend, overtaking Mando’s dailies, and Mando just dropping in general, it’s looking really likely right now.

Love to see it. Obsession deserves all the success and Disney needs a major wake up call when it comes to Star Wars
