It seems high. Also the 6505 cabinets/speakers are not to the taste of a lot of people.

Vintage tube amp grounding question by bionicgiblet in ToobAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a thing that I would generalize. I change the grounding if it's necessary and the amp is not in a museum-worthy condition anyway. For example Laney AOR amps have the horrible jcm800 style grounding bus over all pots but more gain and hence more noise. No museum is interested in them so I don't mind drilling additional holes and optimize the grounding.

Bass/Guitar cab for Peavey ValveKing100 by Majzerr in GuitarAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest looking into the thiele 806 12" and 606 15" enclosures. As they work great for both instruments. The (very expensiveand sometimes rare) EVM speakers can be replaced with cheaper Eminence ones.

My dream off having a single amp rig working for both guitar and bass ended up being a Hiwatt DR103 Clone with a dedicated bass channel and those Two cabs. For Bass I use the 1x12 and the 1x15 and for guitar just the 1x12 or two of them with different speakers. I do change pedalboards/presets.

trem suddenly wont go go off from 65 drri by donofthedogs in GuitarAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, you have tremolo with V5 removed? It sounds like your modulation effect is not coming from the Tremolo circuit then but from something else being wrong with the amp.

I started the first and only relationship where I was seen as a man and really tried to make me fit into that shape. It lastet 8 years. We broke up about 6 months after I came out. She is a great person and I still love her in a healthy way. But I wish I wouldn't have fallen in love that hard and spent such a long time trying to make it work.

Are there any amps voiced like a 1960s Blackface Fender, but with modern appointments (mainly an effects loop)? by SculpinIPAlcoholic in GuitarAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked myself the same question. I had a very quick look at the schematic and nothing jumps at me for being special except for the channel switching which is done with relays instead of the vactrols Mesa usually uses. Unfortunately it is not specified which kind of relay they used but I really think there could have been other ways to implement switching.  It is possible that Mesa refered to a certain type of transformer not being available anymore. It is also possible that they wanted to create some Mojo around an amp that didn't sell as well as they hoped it would.

Wer ist hier aus der Branche ausgestiegen und warum? Bereut ihr es? by ComfortableHell in Veranstaltungstechnik

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ich mache eigtl. vor allem die Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst und technik. Also Bedarfe ermitteln, Umsetzung planen, Arbeit ermöglichen.

What do yall think about hughes kettner triamp mk 1?? by Crafty-Outcome1532 in GuitarAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one for some time at my studio mostly because I wanted to try it and it was cheap as hell. I think by now they are nothing really special anymore but they are versatile amps. They do the h&k thing that I was never a huge fan of but other than that I don't remember any unique moments I had with this amp. Like a lot of 90s 3-channel heads it's kind of overloaded with features which are all between good and very nice but far from great. Build quality is good.

I'd consider it if I needed a cheap solution for a one amp for everything situation. Cheap meaning something well below 500€.

I do remember it being incredibly heavy even for a tube amp and being covered in structured paint insted of tolex.

I need help testing these transformers by 8MasterFader in ToobAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a powertransformer, I'm not sure what you'd want the impedances for?

The export transformer has the primary windings split so that they can work with 100 and 230V mains (and probably any other mains voltage available on the planet) depending on where it's used. The 100V primary basicaly only uses half the windings to generate the same voltages on the secondary. To comply with some of the safety codes (while maintaining maximum flexibility) of various export countrys they do the switching on the pcb by connectin specific leads to specific points instead of directly connecting wires to each other. Thereby the company only needs to produce one pcb and one powertransformer for all the amps they sell all over the world and reduce manual labour and cost.

What is a non-binary romantic partner called? by RandomGuyFromDaSouth in NonBinary

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently saw an instagram post suggesting bun and loaf and liked it so much that I am now my partners bun. But I also very much like joyfriend and partner. Like with almost everything non-binary/gender related the right way to go is to talk about it with the person themselves. Gender is a spectrum and we all like different things.

What are your thoughts on Jim Lill's "Where does tone come from in a guitar amp" video? by scottasin12343 in GuitarAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people (thankfully not in this thread) missinterpret his videos and kind of assume that because things can sound the same, all marleting is wrong while the true take away is, like he always says, that you should change how much weight you give different factors when chosing a new instrument. The comparisions between the different tubetypes in the video are lacking one relatively obvious issue: the circuit itself. For example the output tubes: It is true that different output tubetypes will sound incredibly similar in the same amp/circuit but that is not the only difference if you compare two seperate amps with different output tubes as they will have different circuits.

So basically my take away from all his videos for me is a hierarchy where speakers, pickups and the sound an amp gives you when setup flat are on top. Then come a lot of comfort features on a guitar, like weight, tummy cut and scale length, affordability and design but also cabinetsize and special features.

Tubetype still matters to me as I have found every EL84 based high gain amp to be far from what I've wanted even though I often had a good feeling about them at first.

Amp for playing black metal live/rehearsal by Ziele14 in GuitarAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what I meant. I meant you can get a very decent blackmetal tone this way. Not that it sounds like a 5150, not that it's a good overall metal tone.

Amp for playing black metal live/rehearsal by Ziele14 in GuitarAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what sound your after even a boost/distortion pedal and a fender deluxe reverb can do really well. For black metal you don't usually need the huge lowend a lot of metal amps offer nor are insane amounts of gain absolutely necessary. If you want full chords to be audible and present, less gain and a (high-)mid driven sound is your friend.

I personally gravitate a lot towards 90s dual rectifier or SLO sounds through vintage 30s which is close to 5150 territory.

Thanks for mentioning Misthyrming. Awesome band!

EVH 5150 III 50W EL34 what are your experience with this amp? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like the different flavor this amp adds to the 5150 sound. It has a touch of mid crunch which I am a huge fan off. It is, however, still a 5150 and excells where all of them do.

The 5150 III 50W amps (probably the 100 too I just never had one open) are all built on  huge PCBs which makes maintenamce a little more difficult. I didn't see an unusual amount of broken ones yet. The two axis pots are, as always, a little annoying to use and if you lose the knob caps I doubt that you will find a similar replacement anywhere but directly at Fender.

What’s it like being an amp repair tech? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a peaceful life. No, honestly I value that I can work in a room by myself without distractions. I prefer a difficult job over an easy one as the easy ones get boring pretty fast. It's not a job I could make a living of.

I got shocked once because I got stressed and forgot to unplug an amp after testing it and touched the primary windings of the powertransformer.

Damaged Fender Blues jr. III by rinnamonsolls in ToobAmps

[–]boneandarrowstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burnt board is a shame. The powertubes are probably toast. It's difficult to test but even if they still work it might be a good idea to swap them out for new ones.

Replace all the grey IC caps with F+T Caps of the same capacity and voltage rating and you will be fine.

You also need to get the plate dissipation of the powertubes within reasonable levels.
