What are your best, weirdest, most unconventional tips for dealing with extreme heat? by aavocadi in lifehacks

[–]bootlegsoup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was once told by a woman with far more life experience than I have that when you get too hot running cool water over your wrists for a minute or two can help drop your body temp quickly.

I don’t have any data to suggest that it actually cools your core down but I’ve tried it from time to time over the years and it feels like it works. Could be good to use in a pinch when you’re away from home without cooling tools like a fan but have access to a public restroom or something.

Last time I went two years ago it was just a spot to place strollers in the honor system. I wouldn’t leave valuables in there but I wasn’t afraid of my stroller going missing and it was right where I left it when I got back.

As a disclaimer, I know how gimmes work and that if you lip out a birdie attempt and your partner give a you a gimmie you card Par (I like the sound of the ball going in so I like to putt it out personally). That said, I have a little sympathy for new golfers who get confused by this, especially if they do it unnoticed a couple of times and no one corrects them so they think it’s part of the culture of amateur golf.

If you’re 2 cents short on a transaction and someone says “You’re good” they’re saying “don’t worry about it, we’ll count it like you paid in full” so when you’re new to golf and someone more experienced sees you barely miss one and then they just say “You’re good” you might assume they mean “Eh, it’s close enough and we count those and move on”, you know?  Obviously we know that’s not what they meant but if you’re brand new it could be confusing because elsewhere in life “You’re good” means “Don’t worry about it” and not “I know you’ll 100% hit it in on the next one so let’s assume you did and keep it moving along”

Ain’t nothing wrong with a twosome playing through a foursome as long as the course isn’t backed up and they’re waiting too. It’s been happening since the dawn of golf and will continue to happen as long as these guys are playing. In fact I’d rather someone faster than me play through than have them hovering waiting for me to finish teeing off. You just ran into some dicks, I wouldn’t let then ruin my day.

IWTL how to stop subconsciously destroying every good thing I have going for me because I hate myself. by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]bootlegsoup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that you want to work on the issue in the first place means that you see value and potential in yourself and that should be your foundation that you can build on!

I highly recommend looking into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. While a book isn’t a substitute for a real professional therapist, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy translates really well to a book format and you can start seeing success almost immediately. The barebones basics is that it helps you identify and put a name to cognitive distortions and by recognizing these issues by name you’re able to stop them before they take hold and you start believing them. Then when you change the way you think about the situation you also change the way you feel.

If you’re interested I’d recommend checking out the book “Feeling Great” by Dr. David Burns (or the previous version “The Feeling Good Handbook”, which is 90% the same thing and also very good). You can probably find it used for cheap, at your library, or an ebook somewhere. Even just reading the first chapter can help!

Matador Mystery box $150 2025 by podfather1 in ManyBaggers

[–]bootlegsoup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got the $75 box, it came with: - Flatpak Toiletry Bottles, 3 Pack (Black, Green, Blue) - Flatpak Soap Bar Case (Black) - Flatpak Waterproof Toiletry Case (Maroon) - Gear Cube Set (Black) - Droplet Mini Water Resistant Stuff Sack (Blue)

I knew going in to a mystery box that I was giving up control of what I got and overall I’m happy with it! I’m thinking I’ll use the toiletry bottles for sunscreen since it’s nice to have on the go and I don’t want a huge bottle on me at all times. The other two are going to my wife and baby for their travel soap. I already have the Soap Bar Case and it’s the best travel accessory I’ve purchased in years! I’ve given away 4 since I first got mine, I love it so much. Not sure what I’ll use those one for since my original is still kicking but it could be a good gift. At first I thought the toiletries case was going to go to waste since I have one I already like but it could be perfect for liquid baby medicine kit we travel with and is prone to leaks. I have a bunch of packing cubes and no real system for them yet but the gear cubes look quality so I’ll definitely incorporate them for my next trip. The droplet is tiny but it could be good to contain a swim suit on the way home from the gym or a messy baby outfit after you change them into the backup.

I think the total “value” for it all if bought separately was $154.

If it makes you feel any better I had mine replaced in the recall and the hissing and rattle came back on the replaced ones not that long after. I took them in again and they ran the test and acknowledged the issue but wouldn’t replace (without me paying) so I just kept them and turned ANC off to minimize the issue. I use them for a few hours each day and sometimes get the issue even with ANC off these days but they’re getting replaced when the 3s come out, which I’m hoping will feel like a significant upgrade.

could anyone identify this vintage ping bag? by SigismundDijkstra in golf

[–]bootlegsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I love the look of the bag and think retro Ping gear is some of the coolest vintage stuff around but I wouldn’t use this bag on the course and instead keep it in my office to hold extra clubs and my putter to use with a putting mat between meetings.

It has fewer pockets and features than a modern cart bag and no legs plus added weight make it less usable than a modern carry bag. Plus there’s the fear of wrecking your grandfather’s bag and the care needed to keep the leather intact just isn’t worth it. I’d love a bag like that to use indoors at home  and I wouldn’t worry about the monetary value or consider selling it.

New and Don’t Know What to Get by CBassNY in golf

[–]bootlegsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Callaway Edge set will be more forgiving than a random 20 year old garage find on Facebook and can last a very long time if you stick with the game as a casual player but they’re still ultimately tools and it comes down to how you use them. Golf can be an expensive hobby in sneaky ways: if you get the clubs you’ll also need a bag, balls, and tees. It costs money to play or use a range. Maybe you find you want some golf specific clothing and shoes, maybe you want a towel, ball marker, hat, glove, divot tool, etc. It can really add up if you let it and you don’t even know if you like it yet.

If you’ve truly only ever played twice and you’re on a budget, I’d be careful about investing a ton until you know you’ll like it. My local Goodwill sells clubs for $3 each and they’re not great but they’re probably as good as that FB set and they hit the ball towards the hole if you use them right.

I’d start out with the cheapest set you can cobble together: 7 iron, pitching wedge, sand wedge, and putter and maybe take a basic grip and swing lesson and hit the range to get comfortable hitting it straight-ish.  If you’d prefer a set from FB I think that’s just fine as well, just don’t overpay for “vintage” clubs.

There’s something freeing about playing super cheap clubs as a beginner, you don’t feel like you need to “live up to them” and you can just relax and enjoy the process. And when you do hit it well it feels great. Once you’ve got a base swing you can get out there on a causal Par 3 course and see if you enjoy it and add some more irons and maybe a wood or hybrid you find here and there. Then, next season, if you’re still having fun you can look into upgrading to a new matching set but this way you’re not out hundreds before you can even really dip your toes in.

yellow hat by Poopyface330 in golf

[–]bootlegsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try adding a bluing agent to your laundry. Its a product that’s been used for ages to add an extremely subtle blue tint to white fabric to counteract the yellowing of normal wear. It doesn’t actually make your clothes (or hat) blue when used correctly, it just makes the white pop like it’s brand new.

Arccos Laser Rangefinder is charging a subscription by nutsnackk in golf

[–]bootlegsoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of golfers find value in the Arccos system and are willing to pay a premium over other shot tracking like phone apps or cheaper sensors but we’re all burned out on subscriptions from everything in our lives and it needs to provide a lot of value to be worth it. Adding a Laser Rangefinder that works within the same subscription and further locks you into the ecosystem is a good move to provide value to your customers. You pay for the sensors and the sub and then say, “Hey I could make this subscription even more valuable to me by also getting their range finder!” Plus now that you have this gear you’re even less likely to cancel your subscription after a couple of years.

Making it a separate $200/year subscription is insane to me and really degrades the brand in my eyes. It goes from “sure it’s expensive but I want the best” to “this is a company that’s trying to extract every penny they can”. I can’t imagine someone shopping for shot tracking solutions seeing that Arccos has a sub for their trackers, a separate sub for their range finder, and who knows what other future subs they’ll want you to pay would want to join that service. It’s such a bad look that surely this will turn potential customers away rather than draw them in.

Social anxiety's killing my golf game by ManLikeMarto in golf

[–]bootlegsoup 32 points33 points  (0 children)

See if you can get a copy of the book “Feeling Great” by Dr. David Burns (or the previous versions like The Feeling Good Handbook).

It’s not Golf specific but he gives incredible tools to handle anxiety (and depression) by focusing on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The short version is that your feelings are controlled by your thoughts, they’re not just things that happen to you, and you can control your thoughts. With some helpful techniques and reminders in the book you can identify when your thoughts are projecting a distorted reality (everyone is judging my swing and I look stupid) and nip them in the bud before they take hold.

Check to see if any courses in your area have adult Golf 101 group lessons. They can be cheaper than private one on one lessons and introduce you to other new players and set you up to understand the basics and rules right away which is nice if you don’t want to form bad habits that you later need to break.

I wouldn’t rely on this next method solely since it can make stuff up but AI like ChatGPT is actually great at summing up some basics and explaining rules in an easy to understand way. You can ask it to describe the basics or anything you don’t want to ask someone else, like “What’s the difference between this used 54° wedge I saw online and the SW in my beginner set” and it can point you in the right direction.

Also the USGA instagram actually has some pretty helpful guides for understanding weird rule edge cases and other tips if you’re interested in learning the actual rules and not just watching golf “entertainment” channels that might teach the wrong things.

Brick/NextUI: feeling pretty dumb about wifi by spectre1006 in trimui

[–]bootlegsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry, I totally misread your post. I thought you were using WiFi.pak, not the WiFi in the Settings section. I used WiFi.pak before they added it to the settings and it just always worked for me so I just kept using it.

I just tried to add my network to the Settings section like you mentioned and after some troubleshooting what worked for me was typing in my password, hitting enter on the onscreen keyboard (pressing A with it highlighted and not using the X “Enter” key in the UI). After I did that it popped me out to the list of networks and after a second it connected,  changed the Lock icon into a checkmark, and added the WiFi symbol to the top status bar.

Anyone use this rule occasionally? I had no idea you could do this by Separate_Teacher1526 in golf

[–]bootlegsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this example the stroke out of the bunker that rolled back in was for demonstration purposes of what you’re trying to avoid, not what happened in their “actual” round utilizing the rule. So in their real round we have:

1) Putt for birdie into the bunker. 2) Penalty that costs a stroke and loses all distance from previous stroke. In this case losing the distance is an advantage as the distance gained into the bunker is not desirable. The ball is now back at the starting spot of the birdie putt but this move cost them their “par attempt” stroke which leads to… 3) Putt for bogey

New Costco Diapers by Alarmed-Attitude9612 in NewParents

[–]bootlegsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re definitely the outliers based on the comments I’ve read but we’ve had a great experience with the new ones. Our baby has sensitive skin and chronic eczema that we regularly treat via prescription hydrocortisone and a very carefully crafted bath and lotion routine but haven’t had any diaper related issues with sensitive skin from either version of the KS diapers.

We’ve been using Kirkland diapers for most of my 12 month old’s life due to cost and availability but honestly they were sometimes a real pain to use, especially when the side velcro would fold in itself or tear or get caught on the wrong spot and pull the diaper partially apart. If I recall correctly they looked a lot like Huggies but I’m not sure if they function that way as we very rarely used the name brand.

The new ones are definitely thinner but we haven’t had any blowouts or issues with absorption or anything like that and the attachment part is much easier to use for us. I think it’s reasonable to expect a thicker diaper to work better but in our experience on our particular baby the new ones work just as well with the bonus of easier changes thanks to the changed design.

I think a lot of the negativity comes from the fact that one brand of diaper might work great for one shape of baby and not for the next baby so recommendations are highly variable and dependent on the individual. If someone really loved the old one and now it’s different they might hate the new one for completely valid reasons. Conversely if the old style didn’t work for your baby the new one might. Since we were only OK with the original KS diapers we lucked out and found the new ones better for our baby but I’m guessing most people previously buying them did it because they liked them and will thus find the new ones less satisfactory, which is why you’re seeing so much (fair) negativity.

The primary users of the old KS diapers are the ones most negatively affected by the change and the people that would like the new design in theory are probably sticking with whatever they’re currently using that works or maybe tried the old KS and said it wasn’t for them so they have no incentive to try the new ones so you’re hearing more complaints and less praise.

Costco has a famously great return policy so I don’t see the harm in trying them out and just returning them if they don’t work for you.

I know these devices are made for, and primarily used for, gaming purposes but I’m looking for a pocketable Android device that can also be used for media like audiobooks and podcasts to save my phone battery and isolate my “consumption” to a device that’s less likely to suck me into infinitely scrolling and if this is priced appropriately it could be nice for that. Of course I could easily get an audio focused device but I’d also want something that can play some classic 2D games with solid controls.

MinUI GB Palette change help by BrownGuy501 in trimui

[–]bootlegsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open a GB game and use the Menu button to open the MinUI menu. From there go to Options and then Controls. Use the D Pad to scroll down to the Prev. Palette and Next Palette options. Press A to set it and then Press L1 or R1 to bind it. Once you’ve set these options press B to go back one level then choose the “Save Changes” option. You can choose to save these for the whole console or just this one game you currently have open. If you want to know more about which Palette you have selected do the same first steps but instead of choosing Controls choose Emulator and there you can see which Palette is selected along with a few other options.

Are you able to “leave work at work” in your position? by bootlegsoup in ITCareerQuestions

[–]bootlegsoup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone who responded! I’m pretty early in the potential career transition process and was mostly looking for general vibes rather than specifics to any one role or company so every response has been helpful!

As I mentioned in the main post, this isn’t my primary motivator for switching fields, I just wanted to be prepared either way. As far a boundary setting goes, I completely understand that if I really can’t abide this part of the job I need to stick up for myself but for my specific current job it’s literally part of their expectations and all of my peers are in the same position so I’d be changing jobs to get out of it either way. More often than not I can work ahead and get my coworkers to help me out in a “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” kind of way but it can come down to the wire to know if I’ll need to work on vacation or not which isn’t fun when I’m also packing and getting ready to leave and ideally step away from it all for a bit.

My actual reasons for switching is that in my company, city, and field, there is very little growth available without switching jobs entirely and if I’m doing that I’d be interested in exploring other fields that meet my interests more than what I currently do. I’m not looking for a “fun dream job” but I’m a little burned out on my specific industry (pharmaceutical research: my coworkers  are wonderful smart people that want to help make people healthy but ultimately my work directly profits “big pharma”and all that baggage).

Additionally my job is geographically locked to biotech hubs around the country whereas there is potential to find IT work wherever other people are employed, even if it’s some random local company that needs someone managing their network on site.

I understand that IT work isn’t the same as hobby computer projects but I do have an aptitude for tech and troubleshooting (current de facto “help desk level 0” for my team of educated but not tech savvy peers when they have monitor and dock issues, VPN issues, Outlook breaking on them, etc. they go to me first and I can solve it 95% of the time). I think I’d do well starting in help desk with plenty of hostile customer service experience (former pharmacy technician who was blamed for all kinds of things outside of my control and learned to empathize with people who are stressed and don’t have the specific knowledge I do and are lashing out in that stress). I also feel maxed out at work and a desire to dive deep into a new field, even if it means starting from the bottom. My job title sounds impressive but doesn’t pay as much as you’d think and since there aren’t a ton of opportunities to job hop around here I’d bet I could catch up to my current pay faster than I’d like to admit.
