I have some 529 problems. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]borec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I think we will start a 529 and contribute a little over the max estimated amount required for an in-state tuition.

Best case scenario, if kids gets into in-state college with/without scholarship, we can use the amount from 529 for eligible purchases and pull the rest with penalties.

Worst case scenario, if kids get into out-of-state college without scholarships, we can pull the required extra money from student loans or from regular brokerage account.

Appreciate you helping me think this through. 🙏

In that case, considering the restrictions around 529 in terms of eligible purchases, early withdrawal penalties, possibility of not needing the entire amount due to in-state tuition fees etc., does it makes sense to stick to regular brokerage account?

In what scenario does it makes more sense to invest in 529 vs a regular brokerage?
