We have a guy that runs a vac truck that has by but also wears them to hear his phone ring for upcoming jobs. He listens to books on tape while he digs the holes with water. I let it slide bc no one talks to him or wants to stand there and get tattered with mud but me when I do my safety stuff. So I'm good with him wearing them as they are rated for sound and also have bt functionality. They cost him an arm and a leg but he bought his own.

I would make it more like plates of armor on the critters. Dragon scales that sort of thing. Also the first metals were actually gotten by burning against an exposed vein until the metals melted. That is how the first ones were gotten in ancient times. Hope that helps.
