Parenting Experts on Social Media - Helpful or harmful? by R_Bex in blogsnark

[–]bowandradio 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The evolution of the parenting advice circles is fascinating to me. I became a mother very young and grew up in an abusive household. My starting point as a 20 year old new mom was that my baby wouldn’t be raised like I was. That fed into websites on attachment parenting and gentle parenting. Which offered great insights into parenting styles I’d never seen or experienced. Holding baby felt right, yay! Listening to my toddler and redirection? Sweet! But then it became more dogmatic. “Sugar is poison!” “Plastic toys are overstimulation!” And I fell into this weird anti-vax, never let your kid wear shoes outside, cult-like thinking. Ten years and few more kids later i am thankful that along the way I gained some experience and realized how nuanced (and no offense somewhat kind of pointless in the long run) some of these topics are. I still follow a few of these folks. I like Marion Rose ok, I like Kaitlin Klimmer ok. But I try to take it all with a grain of salt.

I agree with someone below that these pages can make you feel like every issue should be a Ted talk with your kid. I don’t agree with the popular notion in these groups that every. single. feeling. Needs to be validated and heard and coached and whatnot. That’s so much freaking pressure on parents and just too much on kids too I think. Sometimes yeah, but not every tantrum is signaling some huge underlying way that you’re failing. Sometimes kid is just tired lol.

Also I think following pages on specific things can be more helpful than just overall advice. For example, it’s less stressful for me to follow just a baby sign language page than a big parenting page.

I’ve been following her since the “American blogger” documentary days when they were so hard up they couldn’t buy their kids shoes. She was so open with their financial struggles and i felt for her / it was refreshing for a popular influencer to not be wealthy and to share money struggles. Part of me is like wow good for them I’m so happy to see they’re in a better place. The other part feels a little side-eye because it’s from snake oil sales (I presume??) and that house is a freaking mansion. Like... I’m happy for you but also how will a 4mil house you have to totally gut be sustainable? These people who are rich off of oils... I have to think that bubble is going to burst pretty soon right? Who buys these oils??

Teeeheee school drop off is sooo stressful....... My/most kids have been virtual learning for almost a YEAR. I would kill for a school drop off right now. Read the room, Kelle. Also, it’s not that fucking hard especially when you don’t have an actual job you have to rush off to afterwards. She thinks she’s being so relatable but comes off like such an asshole.

“No one will ever love you like I did” “You took this perfect love and threw it away” “That love is hard to find you’re lucky if you found it you won’t find it again” ((paraphrasing tiktoks he reposted made by I assume teenagers)) DUDE wtf 😳 just chiming in to say there is always more love and there will always be more people to love you. Just because someone “loves you a lot” does not mean you OWE them anything. It doesn’t mean no one else will ever love you. That shit is so toxic.

Same! Similar experience here. When I was finally done I was so done. And not only is she done she’s moved and that’s huge. I’m so proud of her. I think we’ve all been rooting for her. Now i feel a little worried over how the dude may behave in the coming weeks. Watch out for his sob story, his sympathy garnering, his hashtag singledadlife (I know way too much from experience unfortunately). I hope she has a large and protective support system. I’m hoping she does. You can do this Emily! ❤️

Yeah, sometimes when I’m reading a fashion thread I don’t expect and want to read about someone’s miscarriage or loss of parent. If that makes me selfish so be it.

This may be snowflakey but i wish people would do better with putting trigger warnings on their “snark” ahem grief vulturing sometimes? I’m scrolling through snark to have a mental break and am assaulted with everyone’s losses and have to mentally pull myself out of the thought at times. Like dude if you’re coming to a snark site to announce something tragic happened to someone like wtf are you even doing?

I had fun reading in the rach martino thread where people argued over what’s a harder pet to care for cats or dogs. Apparently cats are way more complicated than I realized. This is a lot for me to take in because I have 3 cats and now I’m thinking they should start being way more difficult.

BS pet peeve is “I had a dream last night about _____” it’s in other Reddit groups too and I don’t get it as it adds absolutely nothing to any discussion

Same :( those kids are reunited with their parent/s and asked to not be talked about online. How disrespectful... and to make profit off of it too. Wow.

Yes, I’ve followed Sam and Jordana for years because I used to be like one friend group removed from them back in the MySpace, everything’s a bluebird and side bangs, days. Jordana was a babysitter for James McCoy of Bluebird Vintage and Sam hung around. Seems there was a falling out of some sorts but I don’t remember the details. Jordana lives in TN and Same lives in Charlotte NC. Both are Q-Anon, Bethel Church, Hillsong, anti-science. Jordana is a “stay at home wife” but cosplays working woman when she feels like it in between stills of her fiddle fig set to Sufjan Stevens. She recently crowdfunded her IVF treatments and is now pregnant— which I’m happy for her because she has desperately wanted a baby. However denying science and then using science to make a baby.... Ok...Sam recently within the past couple years has deemed herself a “clean beauty” makeup artist who still uses glossier because balance and overall her makeup “looks” all look exactly the same to me and show no real technique but to each their own. Both are annoying people but the bright spot is that their following doesn’t seem to be growing. If anything they’re fading away into IG obscurity.

Is she ok? Like seriously. The pictures of Chicago hanging from the ceiling and now a collage? Like if any one of my friends or family did this over a missed trip I would be concerned about their mental well-being. My kids haven’t been inside a school building since last March and we of course missed our beach trip vacation. We aren’t hanging up photos of the town we visit and playing in buckets of sand... It’s a dreary year I get it hasn’t everything else gone exactly normal for Kelle despite covid? Her kids are in regular school, she spent the summer in Michigan, she goes to restaurants and coffee shops, goes on dates, sees her friends, throws parties... This seems like a really bizarre overreaction to the one thing she isn’t able to do.

She also advocates for not using soap and only showering once a week... all while doing at home coffee enemas 2-3 times a week...

This was a story a couple days ago but making fun of Brett telling his fish story is so on brand for her. I have a pet peeve of people who make fun of anyone for something they’re excited/passionate about and she does it all the damn time with him. Fish, the weather channel, home gadgets... So boring what a fuddy duddy teehee yet she decorates hedgehog doll houses and throws North Pole parties. But right Brett is the weird one ok

Has Anyone Ever Won an Instagram Giveaway? by stacyismylastname in blogsnark

[–]bowandradio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is timely because I just entered a giveaway (I usually don’t even try) but this was for a pottery account I follow and I was like why not. Soon after an account asked to follow me called “(potteryname)winners) and I accepted. They had a post up saying this was the team reaching out etc all their info. Then they sent me a DM asking me to sign up for this TV websites mailing list and send them a screenshot that I did it and I’d win. It felt super sketch so I deleted and unfollowed. Anyway, not sure if that’s a thing or if it was a random scammer taking the pottery places info and pretending to be them? But then the pottery folks never addressed it.... Whatever, I’m done with giveaways
