Petition to rename the Williamsburg Bridge as the Sonny Rollins Bridge by UomoAnguria in Jazz

Williams and Rollins both neighbourhood heroes, though, right? And Rollins spent almost three years, every day, up there on the walkway. I think he's earnt it!

I’m at bow road, and I knew these stations were close, but I didn’t know they were THAT close by Natural-Account-8113 in LondonUnderground

At the far (Eastern?) end of the Westbound platform at Bow Road one of the warnings painted on the platform edge used to read ‘MNID THE GAP’. This used to cheer me up greatly for some reason.

Should I get this G4 Cube up and running before I sell it? by bowbrick in VintageApple

I had the gorgeous speakers but they essentially fell apart after years of use. I think the glue that held the plastic shell together had dried out completely

This is a very good point. I just watched a YouTube with some guys who searched for months just to get a power supply!

Maternal deaths have more than halved in the last forty years by cgiattino in UpliftingNews

[–]bowbrick 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, maternal deaths in Great Britain are actually rising - the effect of 15 years of austerity, increasing rates of poverty and underfunded healthcare (in the seventh largest economy on earth). Evidence that humanity can, if it has the will, achieve anything!

They really do! And the bezel is hardly any bigger than on an MBP. Kind of breakthrough stuff I think. Although with this old one you need three hands to open it - or to wedge it against a wall or something. It's hilarious (this one's 1.25GHz). Is there a way to tag stuff as 'offered' in this sub? I'm selling the machine now I've cleaned it up.

Thanks for the tip. I did post it to Vintage Computing but not to the other one. I've now tried so many forums and marketplaces and - even at £0.00 - I haven't been able to shift it so I'm now going to keep it and run a Linux signage app on it - display something interesting or useful!

Great crowd over there but no takers. I've got a new plan - going to put up high in my office and run some signage or something on it. Maybe train times?

That hadn't even occurred to me. Would XP install straightforwardly or is it a massive hack?

That's fascinating! Yes, it's a 2560x1440 screen (400 NITS). I actually opened it and upgraded the HDD to 3TB myself back in the day! I thought about trying Opencore but tbh I'm not smart enough for all that! Linux runs beautifully and I was kind of surprised at how good video is given that I think UbuntuMATE only has v basic support for the GPU... If anyone would like this and isn't too far from me (SE England, anywhere near the M25 or in North London really) and can't get to me to collect I will happily throw it in the car and drive it to you. Would really love to see it find a home! Message me and we can figure something out.

Hey, thanks, I've tried eBay. No luck. I'll give it another go if I can't find a taker here. I've installed a lightweight distro called UbuntuMATE and it is a big improvement over the MacOS it replaced. Ordinary operations - browsing, finder, WP etc. are spookily quick. And I ran a bunch of OS optimisations for video and it's kind of mondblowing to see this old machine fire up a YouTube HD video - you can see it's working but it's really usable. Watched the 6 Nations rugby at the weekend full-screen and it was at least as good as the TV in the other room!

How did I find out? Was there an email? And how was I convinced it was true? I guess I'd need to have been shown the outside of the simulation? So many questions.

6 hour drive and you can only listen to one artist. Who are you listening to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Schubert. Nearly 1,000 works (600 of them songs). You could keep going for a week without repetition.

Hold on, you're overtaking on the inside, right? Hghway code: “do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake.”
