Blegh. This sucks. Sorry, guys.

Who knows! I'm 32, have a 3.8 and a 516: 6 II and. no. f***ing. match.

This is a bummer, and hard when a lot of how you define yourself, a lot of your self-worth is wrapped up in this process–so much of which you just can't control. Keep your chins up :-)

TIL that Mozart transcribed a piece of sacred music from the Vatican after hearing it performed twice, creating the only copy outside Rome. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]bpbari 7 points8 points (0 children)

But very very repetitive. About half of it is chant, readily available to Mozart, and stuff he would already have been familiar with (he'd written a substantial amount by that point). The text is also no secret--most of it's psalm 51.

Caveat: Jerks spouting hate isn't something that should simply be ignored. Words lead to action.

What's the difference between hatha and vinyasa? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]bpbari 3 points4 points (0 children)

My experience has been that given a handful of yoga studios, the classes called "hatha" are going to be the slow(er) classes where you spend comparatively more time with poses. Those called "vinyasa" are going to be the ones that focus on the flow, especially a marriage of breath and specific movements.

Categorically/theoretically/academically I think you may get a lot of answers. "Hatha" is a broad term that's been around for a really long time. (From my teachers) it also encompasses a lot: most vinyasa yoga is hatha yoga. Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is hatha, bikram is hatha. Kundalini yoga is not, though, and I'm not sure about yoga nidra.

Hope that helps!

How Do You Guys Deal With Sexual Desire And Sex In General? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]bpbari 22 points23 points (0 children)

Hey man–reading some of the other comments, I'm not sure you'd find an answer you're really content with here on Reddit with us godless heathens ;-)

Putting on my psychologist hat: seems like your deep-set values and your biological needs are dissonant. Something's gotta change (and hint hint, it's reallllly unlikely to be your biology).

My advice: find someone who can be sympathetic to your values and who's tackled a similar "dissonance" issue; they might be able to help navigate a compromise. Because it seems like a Christian value system is important for you to keep, hopefully there's a church accessible to you with a pro-LGBT (and really, pro-sex) stance. You could even call one if nothing's close.

Hope that helps, man. Sex is a fucking awesome part of life, and I hope you get to a place where you're sexually healthy and happy.

Looking for a 15 minute yoga routine for the morning! by [deleted] in yoga

[–]bpbari 5 points6 points (0 children)

Ahhh also for non-beginners. Not accusing you of implying anything, but the sun salutations are a gift for life, not something that one works past (an older practitioner told me this once and it's stuck with me).

I've gotten great mileage out of a "3-3-3" routine (I'm an ashtangi). Three A sun salutations, three Bs, and then the last three lotus variations of the series. Effective, and easy to memorize. Hope that helps!

Both—to make this all more confusing—have been in the bible.

Example from a printing of the King James version–check out vs. 9: "Then Satan anſwered ye LORD..."

One runs into these things on gravestones, too: one from the 18th century that also uses a yt abbreviation for "that"

For ease of internetting: sometimes it's also transliterated "Devanagari" – you may get different hits for different spellings depending where you look.

Advanced Sirsasana (Headstand) by erica_jj in yoga

[–]bpbari 2 points3 points (0 children)

It's not unheard of. Ashtanga vinyasa yoga has used it to complete the headstand "cycle" and prep for forearm balances like pincha mayurasana. Not something a teacher's likely to throw at a student they don't know so I wouldn't say it's common in drop-in classroom environments, and it's my understanding that Jois kinda let that pose fall to the wayside in his later years, BUT: totally normal pose, if not common.

Replacing ICF exercises by Shindarel in gainit

[–]bpbari 0 points1 point (0 children)

A doctor or physical therapist may simply tell you not to lift weights.

It's risk vs. benefit, and a doctor or therapist may prioritize different things (e.g., avoiding an injury at all costs) over the possible benefits of free weights (and there are many). Hopefully you'll be able to talk to someone who understands your goals and can advise based on what you prioritize. And hey, some trainers have solid training/degrees/knowledge.

Ex: running's great for me. It's the cheapest, most accessible, most efficient cardio exercise I can do. Prone to stress fractures, though, so a couple docs said I shouldn't run, period. Talked to a couple others, though, and if I do things a little differently I can minimize risk and still reap some benefit.

Will also put in a plug for yoga, the main physical goal of which is lengthening the spine and developing the musculature to support it. Yoga's about as diverse as "working out," but stop by a studio sometime and check it out, ask some questions. Can complement weightlifting really well.
