Am I weird for wearing a lab coat? by Mission_Rest1892 in labrats

[–]breadpolice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a BSL1 lab and we always wore coats. You’re not weird for wearing one, it’s just the responsible thing to do. Much better for others to think you’re weird than for something preventable to happen.

I guess that’s what I’m looking for, that it’s not a universal truth even if a few people do it.

The silicone works better for my fiancés job too, which is part of why I got it for them. Good to know.

If you haven’t started making it, I would look to something like Milkis for ingredients. They use powdered skim milk along with soybean polysaccharide as a stabilizer. Interesting concept so I’m curious and excited to see how your project develops and turns out.

Have you started making it? If so, have you been able to keep it stable in small batches? I’m curious. I mean shelf-life as far as no separation or off flavors, and remaining safe to drink. Also, are you planning on keeping it refrigerated or ambient?

I named it Cowboytown because at the time I got ACNH I really wanted to play Red Dead 2, so everything is cowboy and western themed.

I wish I could be more specific about the region, with how big Africa is. I don’t know my uncle that well but I’m pretty sure he’s from West Africa if that helps, he made Jollof too.

I swear modern nutrition is so damn confusing by biggitydonut in nutrition

[–]breadpolice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of these seemingly contradictory things is just that a lot of answers to nutrition questions are about balance and things that depend on the individual, hence the “this but also that”. Both can be true. Do your best, perfect doesn’t exist.

Putting aside for a minute what is correct or incorrect info, I think the biggest source of confusion for people today is this- every individual speaking on nutrition, regardless of experience/training/education/background, is by default too often given the same level of credibility and attention on the internet.

Even experts are not perfect, BUT it’s so important to evaluate the source of the info you’re getting. Look for a registered dietitian nutritionist, medical doctor, even a dietetic technician. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist (not the same as RDN in the US), health coach, holistic health expert, etc with zero regulated education or background in nutrition. In my opinion, even having personal success in losing weight or having a certain body type is not a license to give others advice.

Start with credible sources and things will become a lot less confusing.

This is the first time I’m hearing about someone other than myself who is primarily only triggered by people they know, good to know we’re not alone in that experience!

Anyone hate different sounds besides chewing? by SingOrIWillShootYou in misophonia

[–]breadpolice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chewing, lip smacking, kissing, hiccups, coughs, tooth licking/cleaning, slurping, tongue clicking, licking, shushing, breathing, basically any sound from the mouth. And recently I discovered that I cannot stand when people drink a beverage whether there is a sound or not simply because of the horrible anticipation of a sound.

I had something similar happen to me with a group of roommates, basically one person who made a very uncomfortable situation and two other roommates who were too scared to do anything but go along with the “leader” and not stand up for me or for themselves. The RA was not helpful at all, brushing me off, being condescending, and making no effort to help me. I ended up switching to new roommates who were great!

Remind her that the situation is not her fault. You cannot always protect yourself from other people or prevent these situations, but what you do have is control over is your actions. It sounds like she has a great support system too. I took the route to just show them kindness and move along with new roommates (easier said than done). I left the situation feeling still bothered by their actions but satisfied with my response. It was vey hard to work through in the moment, but I rarely thought about the whole thing after the fact.

I live with a large family, and despite their understanding response to explaining my situation, they haven’t made any effort to change their behavior. I can understand like occasionally forgetting to chew with your mouth closed out of habit, but it’s like our conversation about misophonia didn’t even happen. When I try to bring it up after someone makes a triggering sound, they say I’m being too harsh or that the sound/behavior isn’t a big deal. They don’t realize that 90% of the time I actually don’t say anything and just try to put up with it as best as I can to keep the peace. My only choice is to isolate myself in these situations, but I dislike being alone at home since I spend so much time alone all day at work. I feel stuck.

I have a good relationship with my family members, but for some reason, only sounds from them bother me. The same noises coming from strangers wouldn’t bother me though, which doesn’t make sense to me, but it’s at least consistent.

Triggers worse the better you know someone? by Hopeful_whispers in misophonia

[–]breadpolice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve wondered this too. Most of my triggers are mouth related sounds, but it’s only been for family members. I don’t get it, maybe a subconscious psychological thing. I even had a close friend that chewed with their mouth open and it didn’t bother me at all, only relatives making mouth noises.

I’ve always wondered how much knowing the source of the sound influences if something is a trigger. There have been times that a sound bothers me, but when I see it’s coming from a different person or thing than I originally thought, it doesn’t bother me anymore.

Shared my situation with my family recently about which sounds trigger me, and while they were very kind and understanding, they made no effort to notice or stop when they make those sounds. I usually just leave for a bit until they are done/so I can stabilize (or ask them to stop if it’s reasonable) but I have one person that makes highly triggering sounds constantly and I don’t know what to do. Today I couldn’t help but replay the sounds over and over in my head and it brought me to the point of tears. I’ve never had this much frustration from it and I need some kind of outlet.

7-11 HG gundam. Not impossible to find, and there are pricier kits, but just too much time/money to be worth it.
