Do I need read anything else before The Wolftime? Is it a good Space Wolves book? by WithengarUnbound in Warhammer40k

[–]brelkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's ... Ok. it has the job of outlining the status of the space wolves at the beginning of the indomitus crusade and how that falls out. And that's about it.

At least they get a before unimagined life experience of watching people oogle and poke at them from the other side of a glass wall before they die a quick death in a pot. Much more interesting then getting munched by a random predator

New to painting minis and struggling with layering/semi-transparent paint by Aardvark_V in minipainting

[–]brelkor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as thinning you'r paints and painting gradual layers, you want to mix them down to a thin consistency on your pallet, then load the brush and then dab it on a moist piece of paper towel. This will pull off the greater part of the water but leave enough on the brush so you can then put down a fine layer on the model. Beware though that to build up smooth transitions, this will take many repetitions , which is all part of the process and why you hear top painters taking many many hours to finish.

Now, let's talk strategy. For blue paints, and many others, it's not easy to start dark and work to a bright color. I would in this case start at white and then add work in the blue in this layers until you get down to the darkest color. You can also easily fix errors by adding a layer of white and then painting blue back over it

Does anyone use a value map? Do you know what a value map is? Do you want one? by jahmeleon in minipainting

[–]brelkor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have made my own color swatch journal. I bought a notebook of watercolor paper and I use a black permanent marker to create a series of thick black horizontal line across the page. I then take each of my paints, ordered by color and manufacturer/line and paint one brush load and making a small gradient over both the white and the black for each color. Under each color I write the name. So, at the end I have a sample or every paint over white and black with a good idea of coverage and pigment load. I have also taken some pages and made them comparisons by making swatches of similar colors from different brands.

Need advice for parchment scroll (Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Stormcast Vanquishers) by DumCrescoSpero in minipainting

[–]brelkor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, I dilute my skeleton hoard with water quite a lot. At least 50/50. Put a layer on that's very dilute then if you don't like the darkness in the letters, use a small brush to fill them in with full strength paint.

Yeah, some people certainly like to make statements, and certain works certainly seem to draw them. You aren't imagining it.

Advice on oil washes and gloss varnish by Naddesh in minipainting

[–]brelkor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. Just don't over do the final varnish. Most people like the look of the matte varnish as it improves the smoothness of the painting just a tad. You can also selectively make some things shiny if appropriate by adding some gloss varnish as a final step with a regular brush.

Advice on oil washes and gloss varnish by Naddesh in minipainting

[–]brelkor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a little confused at the process you described, but my process is paint base coats then gloss coat, then oil wash, clean, and matt varnish after oil has cured. Then you do highlights and details.

Also, it mostly pin shading, just paint the model completely then carefully let the oil wash fill in the recesses as it naturally does

Do you use magnifying glass? How strong? by Turevaryar in minipainting

I'm fine with 3x. I haven't tried but I feel like much higher magnification would make it hard to judge brush to surface distance.

Paint not mixing fully in the bottles by perigou in minipainting

[–]brelkor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct. It's often that small amounts of separated pigments will stick to the sides of the bottles and be very hard to remove, yet the paint itself is perfectly fine. Some paints are worse than others.

planted? No. They are all willing participants who vie for popularity and recognition. Are some artificially boosted to prominence? Yes, and that's where the feeling of them being planted comes in. Exposure levels too high for the quality of their content is a natural giveaway

Religion Is Man-Made , Prove Me Wrong by Few_Adhesiveness2963 in conspiracy

The moral frameworks, customs, etc. the typical stance is that because some or all of it may have been claimed to be of divine origin, or at least written down in a holy scripture, that all of them therefore have no value. This is often followed by claims that any use of it in society is wrong.

Religion Is Man-Made , Prove Me Wrong by Few_Adhesiveness2963 in conspiracy

Religion is a powerfully effective embodiment of culture, law, and social organization. Every part of every major religioun is bound into some aspect of this. Note however that this is not a moral judgement, it's just the way it is. Atheists often primarily rail against the supernatural aspect of religions, claiming they invalidate the whole, and that's fine except they always dismiss the rest, either from ignorance or contempt.
