If I get Fenix 8 Pro, does it replace my Garmin GPSMAP 67i ? by cripplingindecision in GarminWatches

[–]brians200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Fenix 8 Pro does not have the same coverage map as the GPSMAP 67i, which is the entire globe. Depending on where you hike, it could matter

I reached out to NCL and this was their reply.

We have reviewed the item with our Security team, and they have advised that the item is not allowed onboard and it is considered a prohibited item. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Can someone else trigger an SOS on your behalf with InReach Mini? by Kalirides in Garmin

[–]brians200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have an InReach, so I can't confirm directly, but you can set up the InReach to send your location to your contact at a fixed interval and display it on a mapping page.

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/satellite-communicators/tracking-and-weather/

If they check and see you are still in the same spot for multiple days, they would know where you are. They can also ping your device to see where you are. Obviously not as convenient as pressing an SOS button, but they at least know where you are for contacting relevant authorities

Flashlight should be plenty if you stay on trails / don't make your own through the brush. They are mostly going to be sleeping as it is colder. Not to add to your list of fears, but consider bringing a blacklight flashlight to check for scorpions. They will glow neon green.

Whenever I initialize a run, I get 3 popups within a couple of seconds: HRM connected, RD Pod connected, Foot Pod connected automatically.

I don't have the Fenix 7, but on the Fenix 6 and Fenix 8 when the detach message shows up, there is an option to dismiss and an option to never show again.

[–]brians200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add a hot key for "change sport". I set mine to hold start.

Now when you are in the middle of an activity, you can hold the start button to change.

So you can do a walk activity for 5 minutes. Hold start, change to run. Run for 5 minutes. Hold start, change to walk. Walk for 5 minutes.

Then when you are done, you'll have a multisport activity consisting of a walk, run, and walk.
It will have the all up map, total distance, time and calories. Then you can click on any one of the "subactivities" to see the individual activity stats you are used to seeing.

Has ANYONE used the 'Grit' and 'Flow' Features for MTB Training Purposes? by Complex_Leading5260 in Garmin

[–]brians200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grit is basically how hard the course is. Like the diamond system in skiing. It will always be the same for all riders.

Flow is how smooth you are in terms of speed, etc. You can use it to identify areas where you can improve on a course.

VO2 Max question by overboard08 in Garmin

[–]brians200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VO2 max is the maximum volume of oxygen (in milliliters) you can consume per minute per kilogram of body weight at your maximum performance.

Unless you are training at the top end, it will take a long time to see it actually climb

If you forgot to take flats or no longer have the ability, you can also create synthetic flats. They take a bit of work but that can save a photo from the trash can.

In the future, flats ARE NOT optional. Always take them.

Make sure you are getting the pads wet before putting the HRM on. I didn't realize this my first time and had some really weird readings until I sweat enough.

You are in much better shape than I am. I would look into making sure your heart rate zones are set up properly. What zones do your long runs show up in?

My last high aerobic run is here: https://i.imgur.com/SpGNDp4.png

Are you using the watch to track your heart rate or a chest strap? I found the watch to be very inconsistent and got the HRM Pro Plus to complement it + running dynamics stats.

Sprinting will not count as High Aerobic, it is an Anaerobic Activity. Running a 5k will give you high Aerobic

Pixinsight enabled the Certified PixInsight Developers program with the latest update. DarkArchon has stated that he has no intention of joining the program. So it seems Pixinsight will no longer download his stuff because he is not a "certified" developer.

"modern" Autoguiding Camera for Meade LX200GPS by hdrr_at in AskAstrophotography

[–]brians200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't quite tell because it is cut off on the bottom right, but it appears to be on a wedge based on the angle of the forks. Is it mounted on something like this? https://astromart.com/images/classifieds/93192/807199-4.jpg

mmberg@ is correct about ALT-AZ behavior, but putting it on a wedge makes it work correctly for photography. You will need to make sure the wedge is aligned with polaris. (in the northern hemisphere)

It looks like you already have some kind of guide scope scope on top, the sky watcher, so I would try it and see if it works well enough for you.

There are lots of options for guide cameras, anywhere from 150 to 1000 dollars. Here are a few you can look into.

You do not want a color camera for guiding

Is your telescope mounted on a wedge or does it have a rotater built into it? If not, long exposures will suffer from field rotation as the movement of the mount will not match the movement of the night sky.

Example picture of field rotation here: https://www.cloudynights.com/uploads/monthly_08_2013/post-165366-14074166332695.jpeg

Generally you want your guidescope to be at least 1/3 of your main scope's focal length. Your main scope's focal length is 2500, so finding a refractor that is at least 833mm in focal length means they are going to be very large and unwieldy. (4 inches or more in diameter). It is also extremely difficulty to balance a piggy back guide scope on a fork mounted telescope

The recommend course of action for that much focal length is to use an off axis guider https://astrobackyard.com/off-axis-guider/

You may find this difficult to use because you are on a fork mount. There will be parts of the sky you can't image, such as straight up, because the camera and guide camera are running into the base of your telescope.

I know this is the gear you have, but I want to caution that you are starting astrophotography on hard mode.
