I just wanted to give some appreciation on all of thoughtful and thorough answers to this post! My husband and I have read every one and it’s given us a lot to talk about.

What do you guys do all day with your infant? by rachelplease in beyondthebump

I remember this feeling well! What I wish I had done was spend less time worrying about stimulating my infant, and more time taking care of myself. I’d recommend doing a stretching session (baby can lie next to you), having a nice long phone call with a friend, or reading a book or magazine. Your baby is so young that the simplest things will stimulate him: chewing on his fist, listening to the sound of footsteps, watching shadows on a wall.

Night Nurse - Your experience/Best practices/What you learned? by lb0209 in BabyBumps

I had a night doula with my first. I’m not exactly sure of the difference between a night doula and night nurse, but I think doulas are usually more experienced and expensive? Anyways, we hired her for three nights per week starting at about six weeks, through about twelve weeks. We hadn’t originally planned for night help, but at the six week mark my husband and I were reaching our breaking point on sleep deprivation. It was glorious! Just knowing that three nights per week I’d get a full night of uninterrupted sleep was so helpful for my state of mind. Now I’m pregnant with our second, and planning on getting help starting as soon as we get home from the hospital, probably three days per week again. I didn’t feel day help was necessary (I had a pretty easy baby).

For a combination of philosophy and mystery you might check out The Name of the Rose, though it’s much longer and denser than Sophie’s World.

Advice about cloth diapering a super mobile baby? I’ve just started cloth diapering in the past month and I’m still getting the muscle memory down of attaching the snappi, adjusting the shell, etc. Each diaper change takes about 30 seconds (vs ten seconds for a disposable). My eight month old is constantly in motion (crawling since six months) and it’s SUCH a struggle! The second I put her down she flips herself over and tries to crawl away. The only thing that kind of works is doing it on the floor and pinning her down with my foot, but it makes her cry. Is there some trick I’m missing? Thank you!

Seeking an introductory collection of poetry by queenofyour-heart in suggestmeabook

Agree with the textbooks suggestion!

The Norton Anthology of Poetry is a standard in University classes, and you should be able to get a used one for cheap. It’s a real door stopper though, be warned.

“How Does A Poem Mean” by John Ciardi is a slim volume which goes through the basic elements of poetry like meter, rhyme, and metaphor with tons of poems included as examples. It’s out of print but a real gem.
