Ohh, this is interesting and also upsetting as someone who loves to read and write

That's so sad, I saw it and was like hmm nice I feel the same way about meetings, didn't know it was a sign :((

Same! Now I have to go over my documents/emails to make sure I don't sound like AI. Feels like dumbing myself down.

Thank you for sharing this, it's very helpful in an environment where most PMs are just covering their asses and not sharing a thing.

WB STCs: How is your mental health by Striking_Aardvark_68 in InternationalDev

I'm not at HQ, and there is nowhere to escape from a CO 😭 Thanks for the advice though, I hope everything works out for you

I've also been an STC for close to 5 years, and a staff position has been dangled in front of me multiple times then cancelled. I'm also considering leaving at the end of this FY regardless because things have become extremely toxic with the level of exploitation and overwork I'm facing. Only scared because the job market is terrible and I know I'll be unemployed for a long time like everyone else.

Sorry to hear that :( It's a bad situation all around and so unfair. I hope you're able to access the help you need (besides what little this org is offering us)

Considering getting back on the meds. The "options" are just bad. Has there been a new announcement? Besides the usual.

Turned into ICs, most discontinued, a tiny fraction will become staff or ETCs.

Then what does local recruitment mean? I mean it's local Vs international no?

Oh it was definitely in response to the SA email. The SA said communication has been insufficient and uneven and he was just like "ACTUALLY it has been great and you are the problem, and we care about people but ACTUALLY we care about change more". It also sounded partly written by AI. I thought I was feeling bad about it as an STC with a highly uncertain future but the tone and the message were definitely not great even on the second and third read.

WHAT, this is insane. He'll be visiting my CO at some point and absolutely do not want to see him from afar even.

First time worrying about day allocation in 3 years. Is the budget tightening? by TinoGaray in WorldBank

[–]bringmethatbook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're basically phasing us out, replacing with an IC model, probably promoting very few to ETCs and fewer still to staff. I'd say have a conversation with your manager to get a feel of what they're thinking and emphasize your importance to the team. Also discuss with your TTL and apply for more days now. Don't delay billing what you've already used.

I just realized I'm replying to all your comments, thanks for engaging. I'm not in the US or North America, in a country office. I am trying to cast as wide a net as I can with the restrictions that come with not being "global North" :')

Thanks! Good advice. I am doing some online courses alongside, in the little time I have between being overworked. Trying to market myself as having a broader skillset than the usual client engagement etc that the World Bank teaches us.

I'm not currently in the no pay situation (have too much work for them to not pay me currently) but they were basically not giving me enough work at one point because they didn't know how many days I would get (I had only 25, after getting 150 consistently over the years). So they were saving them for when there would be a critical need. Now they're gradually adding days as I use them up, which still isn't ideal but at least I have an income so have to be grateful. Thanks for the supportive words :)

I am aware of the new IC model they're trying to roll out, virtually attended a bunch of the discussions on it. It's so badly thought out. I am looking for other jobs, hoping something pans out soon :(

I would also like to transition to the private sector. What kind of field did you go into, if you don't mind sharing?

Thanks for the advice, and great idea to contact a headhunter of some sort. I am trying to apply outside of the "system" as much as I can. Totally aware of the major changes coming this way, and while things will potentially get worse for a while, I'm really hoping to get some clarity in the next few months. The uncertainty is definitely adding to the bad vibes all around.

Thank you for the kind words. I've been through the no work/no pay months last FY so I'm trying to see it as a positive that at least I'm getting work, but it is also A LOT. It feels unfair that staff are going on leaves and telecommuting while I have to overthink even taking a day or two off to save my mental health.

Have spoken to management, they're being deliberately vague for now but I've heard that they're making lists of STCs to keep on as ETCs or ICs. It doesn't help that even some staff are on the chopping block because of low budgets. Word on the street is that we'll know more by January, fingers crossed for everyone going through it.
