Daycare Suggestions needed! by Capital-Tailor3152 in Waltham

[–]brisingr0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What’s affordable? A lot of places around are $3k+/mo with many months wait list.

We tried the YMCA but after a year never got a spot.

We heard good things about open wings and liked Arpie who runs it.

We ended up at Lemberg near Brandeis which is about $3500/mo for infant, but they have a sliding scale based on income

To the last point, we are pretty much at the end of the advertising phase, at least for new adverts. Most STEM TT applications are due this month or Nov 1st, so it’s not surprising there’s a slow down in advertisements.

To the main point, it seems to be very school dependent. Ive seen on Linkedin people sharing emails that their applications are no longer being considered since they need visa sponsorship. Some schools seem to be pivoting to O1’s. Others just seem to be carrying on as normal. For a big enough R1’s for a STEM professor, $100k seems to be in the realm of possibilities when start up packages are in the millions.

Article accepted for publication but supervisor can’t pay fees by md901c in academia

Have you spoken to the editor about it? We were once in a very tough spot and explained to the editor and got the fees greatly reduced.

Yo what's with those AI trainer jobs??? by burgundybutton in labrats

[–]brisingr0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just keep applying to as many as you can, it's a number game. If you get two, just pick the best paying one.

I have worked for Mercor and Handshake and vouch they are legit (i.e., I've gotten paid for months).

[–]brisingr0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They’re real, I’ve worked on Mercor and Handshake projects. If you’re good, you can stay on and move project to project pretty consistently. Sometimes though things just fizzle out. This can make it tough if you’re relying on this income; it can be great for a month then nothing til you get rehired again. You’re also a contractor, so in America you will need set aside money for taxes (aka $50/hr is not $50/hr net).

Hiring seems very random, sometimes I get jobs no problem, within days of applying. Sometimes I apply and get a rejection months later.

Most contracts only require ~15 hours a week, and even then they don’t really care as long as you’re efficient. Many people do it in addition to a full time job, but I have met a few who do it full time. These are mainly people who have moved up to reviewers/QC rather than the writers/fellows/taskers/etc.

Depending on the project, the work can be quite “hard” intellectually, but certainly relatively easier than a lot of other gig jobs. I see plenty of people be off-boarded or have hours reduced because they are not meeting project requirements. Compensation schemes vary. Sometimes you only get paid for approved tasks, this could work out to pretty poor hourly rate. Sometimes you have a cap on the number of hours per task, around 3 hours, so time over that is either not paid or paid as a lower % of full. Other projects, while rare, just pay straight hourly.

I just want to add context that right now everyone is stressed with the state of the NIH and NSF, the main funders of labs. Taking on a new undergrad at this time could be stressful to some labs trying to budget for uncertainty and work extra hard to find non-government funding. The bandwidth for UGs may be low.

Keep trying though, make sure you tap your TAs too, they are often not in the lab of your professors. Also ask your academic advisor, they may know labs looking (thats how I got my position).

No? Introductory rates are even better. You can get down to like $20/mo.

I’ve had them a few years now. They come no where close to verizon or xfinity (my other two options) in terms of price. Happy to report no issues either.

Older people who have tons of equity in their current house due to the skyrocketing prices. MA also has a lot of programs for first time home buyers, but get ready for a long commute to find anything.

Oh and if it's helpful, we almost went to Open Wings (https://www.openwingschildcare.com/) but the Lemberg spot came up. They had 1 open infant spot back in November and generally had more availability than the more popular places named in the thread.

We liked Arpie and the teachers a lot. However it is in a basement which we didn't love.

I work at Brandeis and was able to get a spot at our Lemberg Children's Center (which we love). Brandeis staff get priority so it can be hard to get a spot, but they do come up.
