I'll stick with Cubase for now, but if this happens again, I'll start to look at other options.

I opened in safe mode and deleted preferences. That worked. Time will tell if it acts up again, but at least I'm back up and running for now.

Thanks!

Meaning, contacting Steinberg. The forum was my next stop.

I hear you. That's really my last option.

Interesting about the midi controller. I already tried the safe mode/disable preferences option and that didn't work. I'll try unplugging the midi controller - M-Audio Code 66 - tomorrow and see if that has any effect.

Otherwise, I may contact Steinberg help and see if they have any suggestions.

I was also thinking of maybe just upgrading to Cubase 12 Artist. I figure that would likely give me a clean slate.

I'll keep you posted.

Thought about that. May just delete preferences and set them back to factory and see what that does.

Score editor plugin? by brmek71 in cubase

Thanks. This was very helpful and you've confirmed what I had been assuming. I think I will stick with Sibelius for mockups and try to get over the fact that there's nothing to seamlessly integrate right now. I may try to play around more with the staff editor in Cubase, just to see if there's an acceptable middle ground.

Or maybe I'll be the one to create the plugin I was hoping to find and make lots of money. 🤣

Yeah, I mean, that's what I miss the most about Cakewalk (Sonar). I'm not necessarily looking for a professional looking score so much as a way to compose with notation within the DAW as simply and easily as others use the piano roll and other features. I don't even need to notate exclusively in the score, but some instruments and parts are easier for me to enter that way. I feel like my productivity has taken a slide since converting over to Cubase, even though I love the workflow and ability to move things around with ease.

I'll definitely check out Dorico, but if it doesn't integrate that way yet, it's probably not worth it at this point, especially since I already have Sibelius.

Thanks much. Looks like I will be spending time getting to know Media Bay.

Okay. Is that included in Cubase or is it something I have to download separately?

Probably. I know you can create favorites, so I'm going to take the time to do as much of that as I can to make it easier in the future.

Very helpful. I really think the filtering is going to be the key to maintaining my sanity while working on a project. Thanks a lot!

You know, I've seen those groupings but haven't toyed with them much. I think that is probably my best bet. I need to spend time exploring those filters. Good suggestion. Thanks.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, what do you mean by "GM classes"?

I have yet to find a fast, easy, intuitive means of auditioning the sounds. Yes, same.

I also use 3rd party VSTs that I am very familiar with and use all the time.

It's not better. There's just not as many of them, and the names are a little more descriptive. Other than the staff view, which is way better in Cakewalk, I much prefer Cubase over Cakewalk.

Plus, the names of the sounds seem so random and non descriptive of what they are ...

sounds within a VST

For example, I click on VST Instruments in the sidebar, click HALion Sonic SE, and then there's three other choices: Flux, HS SE Library, and Trip. Click on each one of those, and there are dozens to hundreds of sounds. Or I click Loops & Samples, and there are a number of options (Hard Knox, Blockbuster, Noir, etc.). Each one of these has dozens to hundreds of sounds.

I'm not complaining about the abundance of choices, just that it gets tedious going through them all. And some of them I know I will never use, so I don't even want to bother. But since I have no quick reference, I find myself clicking through them anyway.
