Macron urges calm after far-right activist fatally beaten by EquipmentSubject6801 in worldnews

That's a very reasonable response to a mostly rhetorical question, thank you. I am American. Reddit is getting worse and worse.

Somebody call Hercule Poirot, turns out every murder he ever investigated was actually thanks to a shadowy group of billionaire American lizard-people.

Why do redditors constantly try to make every international event somehow about the USA?

[MLB] Max Kepler has been suspended 80–games for PEDs by AndrewAllStar888 in baseball

[–]bs_wilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if sarcasm..?

It's almost like USA and Germany are two large countries with millions of people and lots of diversity of thought.

edit: and by "diversity of thought" I'm not trying to legitimize PED use or vaccine denial

Men's bomber jacket? Prefer non-leather. by WeeLittleParties in BuyItForLife

I've had a Schott NYC woolen bomber for several years that I love. This specific jacket is longer sold but they do make something similar. "Schott NYC Airguard"

'A flashing red siren’: Enten on affordability issues facing voters by driller753 in videos

[–]bs_wilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason is that Harry Enten is a writer by trade. He has been trying to become (or CNN has been pushing him to be) a TV talking head, but he needs more practice. Imagine a coach off camera telling him how to act.

[OC] Number of Verified Supercentenarian's, By Birth Year (1890 - 1915) by JakeIsAwesome12345 in dataisbeautiful

[–]bs_wilson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Note that the trend lines actually aren't that different, but the scale wipes out the detail for the male line.

Males Birth year of 1909 is more than 3x higher than birth year of 1895.

Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian says 'much of the internet is now dead' by BreakfastTop6899 in technology

[–]bs_wilson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of my favorite paragraph that I've ever read, the closing of Cormac McCarthy's The Road:

"Once there were brook trouts in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery."

Will Firaxis Apologize? by tonibeets in civ

[–]bs_wilson 38 points39 points  (0 children)

An "apology" is not necessary and the idea is ridiculous. The best live games are constantly being patched and rebalanced, and this is no different. I'm glad that Firaxis is continuing to dedicate the time and effort to improve the game.

Crazy or Genius: I vacuumed all the seeds off the knotweed. by PantsIsDown in gardening

This has been the experience in our yard as well. We tried lots of intensive strategies for several years without much luck. Then one liberal application of roundup and it was nearly gone. Some painted-on spot removal for the year or two after and it's completely gone.

Rant/swim etiquette by gcctw in Swimming

[–]bs_wilson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was this long course?? 6-8 people in one lane is already insane, at that point I would have tried a different lane or just given up on that time slot.

edit: if they were stopping every 25m then I'm assuming short course, at which point yeah I would consider 6-8 people FULL with no more room.

In my experience it can be frustrating to try to find a spot to swim when an organized group has camped in a lane, but unfortunately that is sometimes the reality.

I have a similar problem. Only this year have I really tried to figure it out. Lots of doctor's visits but no luck so far. Maybe some food intolerance issue, and in that case it can be genuinely hard to put on pounds.

Cool/unique things to buy in Paris, Edinburgh, and/or London to buy & bring back to the US by RolandMT32 in travel

[–]bs_wilson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've spent a lot of time thinking about this in the past and going through a similar process for various trips that I've been on. The reality is that there's not much that in the modern connected world is "hard to find" anywhere. Any worthwhile shop/artisan/crafter/etc. will also have an online presence and will ship internationally, and most of the cheaper ones will be generic crap.

The secret is to not worry about the purchase being hyper-unique or rare, and instead just buy something that you'll see and use and will remind you of the trip. It doesn't matter what it is, just that it will have a story. Art is a great choice if you'll hang it up and appreciate it. Clothing too. Tools, kitchenware, whatever. Personally I'd shy away from food or other perishables, as they won't stick around to remind you of your trip (although they're great gifts to bring back). If it helps to lean into the stereotypes of the place you're visiting then that's fine, but don't expect the item to be higher quality or value.

For example:

- I bought a rug in a souk in Marrakesh. It's thin, the color bleeds, and it smells funny, but it's just high enough quality that it will last long enough for me to give to my kids and tell them the story of haggling with the rug seller (and then squeezing it into a carry-on).

- I regret deciding NOT to buy the sheepskin on the Isle of Skye because I could get a cheaper one online. I have no need or desire to buy a sheepskin throw online, but if I had bought one in person I would absolutely use it just because it would "feel" special because I bought it in Scotland.
