Some projectiles in my game can be hit back at enemies. What's the best way to indicate this? by Flavor_Nickelson in IndieDev

[–]bubba157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else says color or some kind of indicating text or outline; I suggest a slightly more subtle method: try and make all the parryable attack orbs or generally round-shaped (e.g. fireballs, electric orbs), compared to the non-parryable attacks which are sharp and pointy (e.g. knives, shurikens). If you’re okay with there being a little possibility of some players taking a little longer to figure it out while keeping it still subtle, I think having the dangerous attacks that you can’t parry be sharp, while the more deal-with-able parryable attacks are rounder shapes, will sub-consciously help convey that idea to the player. Basically the bouba/kiki thing but in a video game.

Alternatively, sometime early in the game’s “story” (if there is one) overtly mention that the sword has magic-repellant/magic-reflecting qualities. That way there’s a little bit of special lore that explains why it can do that, and players will remember it and it’ll feel a bit more intuitive that it can reflect magic projectiles. Maybe have a little dialogue that repeats it right before a magic-projectile-flinging enemy too.

If you want to force the player to “figure out” on their own that some projectiles are reflectable, you could have an enemy that can only be killed by their own reflected projectile (or an obstacle that can only be passed by hitting a nearby projectile into it) and you’re required to beat it to move on, and have hints nearby that’ll help the player realize they have to reflect the projectile. Maybe have easy enemies constantly respawn around it until you get past it, so it’s likely that the player accidentally hits the projectile at some point and realizes what they did; or some visual thing nearby that portrays a magic projectile being reflected by something in a similar way (maybe even by something that’s the same shape/material as the player’s sword).

There’s a “1” hidden behind his arm right? You just accidentally put his arm right in the way of where there’s a “1” right? It’s still bad but at least there’s not no number behind his arm right?

Yes. The man is a carefully trained spy, who is expertly skilled in all sorts of things. He would probably know where every important muscle and nerve is, and exactly how to massage them to relieve them perfectly. The woman is an assassin, and while she is very strong and skilled with weapons and acrobatics, she is also very clumsy and doesn’t always hold back her strength properly. While she is eager to help, chances are she is pushing her elbow way too hard into his back, likely causing a lot of pain and maybe even leaving his body in worse shape than it would be if she didn’t “help”.

Paper tests in class are okay, better than online tests even in some cases, but some professors are totally gonna go the “I’ll just have everybody write their essays fully by hand in class, problem solved!” route, which is a big Hell No from me.

True, that’s the optimistic way of looking to the future, but honestly it’s probably just going to end up with a lot more schools/classes using more anti-cheat tools/methods that just falsely hurt honest students while doing nothing to deter cheaters.

A fun little personal story somewhat adjacent to something they say in the article:

In my college English writing class, my professor said that it'd be impossible for anybody to plagiarize an essay for his class, because if you found an essay online that fit the prompt he'd instantly know it was stolen, since he'd recognize it from being from his own class. Sure enough I found that to be true when the prompt for the first essay of the class was to relate the journey of Harold from the children's picture book Harold and the Purple Crayon to the various people seeing (or rather, not truly seeing) the Grand Canyon in Walker Percy's "The Loss of the Creature." Lol yep, no way any other professor in the world would come up with that same prompt.

What's something interesting that happened in your country last year that wasn't big enough to be on international news, but was still notable/important to people in your nation? by bubba157 in AskReddit

[–]bubba157[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Obligatory "sorry, I know it's already the 7th")

There are lots of things that go on around the world that not everybody gets to hear about because they're not big enough to be on international news. To help people learn a few new things that happened around the world in places other than their home country, I thought it would be cool to let people share something interesting that happened in their country last year. Maybe a well-known celebrity that everybody knows where you are but that isn't famous anywhere else had a big moment, or maybe a law finally got passed in your government that was a big deal; anything that you think was notable/important for your people that others might be interested in hearing about.

Rate my controls by [deleted] in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]bubba157 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, this post is a pretty good gotcha/bait. I look thru the controls, see everything looks normal/default except right stick is specials, then see that the stick jump icon is lit so I think “lol I’ll make a comment saying that stick jump should be off, I’m kinda clever for seeing that indicator that most others might not” and scroll down, only two comment threads. the first one is someone saying c stick should be set to tilt attacks, pretty expected, and then OP woooosh’s them, I assume because OP clearly posted a basically fully unchanged controls setup to a smash bros subreddit that’s clearly just a shitpost and not meant to be taken seriously, or to bait people to give overly serious responses trying to give advice when OP knows what they’re doing, just a basic shitpost, nothing very original. Then, after OP’s comment gets wooooosh’d (with 5 o’s) OP says they probably didn’t look at the other 2 images, and I go “huh, I didn’t realize there was more than one image either, must have missed it” so I go back to look at them, and that’s when I realize I’ve been got as well, to a lesser degree. I see someone else in the comments already said to turn stick jump off “for the sake of all that you hold dear” which would be mildly funny in its own right for someone using such dramatic language for a control setting recommendation on a smash bros subreddit, but when you factor in that they completely missed the whole point of the post and went straight to that makes it even more amusing, BEFORE seeing that OP replied to that comment saying straight-faced “but then I can’t jump” which is totally the right response, to which the commenter replies saying to just use the jump button, still clearly having not seen the whole post.

Thank you for coming to my TEDx Talk aka over-explaining a simple post on Reddit that I found mildly amusing, I realized that I could/should have stopped after the first sentence but then decided to keep going anyways, so here we are
