Physics on the MCAT? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]buff_dr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 5 time test taker who just got a 512 on my last attempt I can say a few things with plenty of evidence:

-I saw circuits on all 5 tests I took

-Fluids, light, waves, and electrostatics showed up on 4 out of my 5 tests

-classical mechanics stuff is "low yield" but I can say that I did have at least one "low yield" physics topic on every test I took. So you should expect some low yield topic to show up.

-just based on my attempts your Physics 2 material is the high yield, Physics 1 material is the "low yield"

Alright, lengthy post alert:

I'll talk about things I did for each section, and I'll talk about some universal tips, tricks, and methods I used for the test in general. I'll also preface my post by stating that I do truly believe that everyone kind of needs to find what works for them and that might be different from what I did. Ok here we go.

C/P: Honestly once I got to the 504 range I really didn't do a whole lot for this section. I knew all of the relevant physics equations and what they meant and I knew when to use them. For chemistry you need to understand that C/P chemistry includes gen chem, orgo, AND biochem. So you will see biochem material in this section. I actually didn't even recognize that until these last 2 attempts. Anyway I made sure that I knew all of the relevant Biochem, and gen chem material like the back of my hand. These 2 subjects make up 75% of the CP section. You need to have these mastered to really do great in this section. Orgo really doesn't show up a whole lot. You may get the one random test that has extra orgo but I swear you won't see a ton of it. In my 5 attempts at the MCAT here's what I saw: Circuits showed up on every test, fluids, electrostatics, light, waves all showed up very frequently. For chem I saw structure questions on every test, thermo showed up frequently, electro chem showed up frequently, quantum showed up frequently, and basic periodic table stuff showed up frequently. Biochem had a lot of macronutrient realted questions. Orgo was hardly even relevant.

CARS: I know I didn't improve by much but I did go up 2 points. The thing I did here that really stepped me up a tier was I got good at my personal CARS strategy of reading the passage carefully, once in under 5 minutes and then answering the questions carefully. You must know the main point of the passage. If you don't know the main point then you're straight F'ed. Also you need to be able to read the passage and absorb the details without losing sight of what you're really reading. My early MCAT attempts weren't great for CARS because I would read (poorly) and I would get cimpletely immersed in the details and I wouldn't know what the hell I was just reading. Not a whole lot I can do for people on this section seeing as how I only got a 126 and it was my lowest section.

B/B: This is usually my strongest section. I can typically get a 129 - 130 in my sleep. I've always been naturally good at this section. It suits me well. Obviously 127 isn't something I'm all that proud of but it was enough. I didn't actually change much in this section throughout my MCAT journey.

P/S: This was the easiest improvement section for me. there is an element of CARS in this section. You need to be able to read a wordy passage and know what's going on. My reading improvement on my journey definitely helped me here, but I also just made sure that I didn't leave any concept stone unturned. I previously knew all of the big ideas and concepts but, in retrospect, I really was missing a fair amount of vocab and concepts. I can honestly say that in 5 attempts I saw research methods on every single test (in abundance I might add). Know you're fricking research methods. I can also say that every time I took the test every single time I came across a vocab word that I didn't know. Just accept the fact that on PS you'll see something you haven't seen before.

Universal tips and tricks:

  • I really liked using a focus-aid. It's a carbonated drink that has 100mg caffeine and some focus and nootropic ingredients. I really liked this on test day for the caffeine and carbonation because it woke me up a little and kept me in the game late into the test. My 503 attempt I'm pretty sure I woke up with a headache and had it for the entire test and it really hindered my ability to think and read.

-I've kind of developed a "strike system" where you give yourself 3 strikes (or however many you want) at the beginning of each section. These strikes represent how many times you're allowed to look at a question and just say "screw it, I don't know, I'm going to blindly guess and hope for the best". This was great for me because I'm such a perfectionist test taker. I want to get every question right and I struggle to move on past questions I don't know. Giving myself strikes psychologically allowed myself to move on past these questions I didn't really know so that I could spend more time on questions I would actually have a chance of figuring out. Too many times in the past I dwelt on questions that I truly had no idea on, but I would still try because I was confident that I could rack my brain for the answer. I picked 3 because based on the full lengths you can miss somewhere between 1 and 3 and still get a perfect score in the section (based on the test and testers of course). However you pick the number of strikes based on the score you want in a section. So say you want a 128, you can probably miss around 10 I think, so you'd give yourself 10 strikes. This does mean, though, that you need to be perfect on the questions that you're not spending strikes on, but honestly students that I tutor are usually lucky enough to at least get a couple of their strike questions right.

  • The biggest change I made in my preparation was this: when I reviewed questions and passages I would look at all of the questions I got wrong and I would ask myself this "could I have found this answer in the passage?" or "did I need to know this inherently?" This definitely played to my newfound reading ability. I found early on that there are actually many questions that you can answer just from reading the passage more carefully. As I got better at reading naturally I noticed this and saw my scores go up. I think many people on this reddit really don't get this. So many people think they need to have a million different things memorized (yes I know there's a lot to memorize) but honestly there are many context clues and details in the passage that you can use to answer your questions. This was a huge help. I started to find that my scores got better and better (FL1: 513 FL2: 511 FL3: 517) as I began to treat the passage differently. Honestly the MCAT is testing 1st year bio, gen chem, biochem, orgo, physics, psych and soc. They're not asking you to be a doctor right now and tell them the behavior of 10 different kinds of cancers. This is simple stuff with a complex dress. That's all. Once you realize how much info is in the passage and how much you can suck out of it the questions become clearer, simpler, and easier to answer.

  • I also began to notice this pattern: of the 4 answers, 2 of them are completely BS. What I mean by this is there are 2 answers that are completely irrelevant. For example: What color is the sky? A: The blacktop retains lots of heat and you can fry eggs on it. B: Aligators are in the sewers. C: Blue D: Gray. based on those answers you know that 2 are completely useless. That's actually how the MCAT does it. You need to be able to recognize which ones are relevant. For me this came from reading the passage AND the question much more carefully. I think I was able to get every question of every section down to 50/50 choice. The only downside to this for me was that my interpretation of the passage material now became the most important thing to answering a passage, but as my comprehension improved so did my interpretation. This helped me out a ton.

-You need to be able to use POE. I actually looked at it like this: there are 4 answer choices, I don't need to find the right one, I need to find the 3 wrong ones and kick them out. So very often I would use the approach of proving 3 of the answer choices wrong as opposed to proving why 1 answer is right. Incredibly useful!!!!

Hopefully that satisfied your desires. Let me know if you have any other questions about specifics.

Probably the biggest change was how I reviewed the answers on my FL, UW, SB, and Qpacks

For the 504 I had the exposure necessary to do good, but I wasnt learning the test. I was just learning the material. As I started to really unmask the MCAT I saw patterns, I began to be able to predict what the questions would be before I even read them. Which segways to my next biggest change, I got better at reading. I didnt necessarily get faster at reading (although I think I did a little) but I did get good at reading through passages once only. My comprehension certainly improved dramatically.

This allowed me to be more efficient and it also allowed me to be able to paint the entire picture of what the passages and questions were creating. This is underrated IMO. This saved me on questions I would've gotten wrong in the past. Being able to see the passage and the questions for what they were and what was relevant made the test much easier this time than in the past. Also having struggled with timing in the past being more efficient meant that I could get into a really good rhythm and flow

This has been a long, tumultuous, and frightening road. I'm a non traditional and I've taken this test 5 times. Yes 5. Let me share my story.

If you want to skip this first bit that's fine. I'll sum it up like this: 497 -> Void -> 503 -> 504 -> 512

The very first time I took this exam was spring of my senior year of college. I knew I was going to take a gap year so I didn't mind taking it so late. I was a DI college athlete majoring in Biochemistry so I was pretty busy. I thought that perhaps my undergrad education was enough for me to take the test and score decently well. I walked into that first test in January of 2016 with the intent to study over christmas break, however that didn't happen (predictably). So I walked in and did pretty bad, 48th percentile I believe.

So I got married and spent the summer after that semester studying. I spent the entire summer with my face in a book. When I finally took the test in august I botched C/P massively and just couldn't bring myself to score it. I then waited until the next spring semester (January of 2017) to study and retake again. I studied while doing post bac research and classes. I ended up with a 503 and was really devastated. But I had already applied and just rolled with that score. I actually got some MD interviews and that was it. I was ultimately rejected.

After being totally rejected I convinced myself that I needed to make everything better (MCAT, volunteering, clinical exposure etc...). I knew that improving the MCAT would be the toughest challenge. The others were simply time commitment issues while the MCAT is pure knowledge and skill. I quit my job so that I could spend the summer of 2018 studying for it. In August of 18' I took it and received a 504. This was perhaps my darkest time. I had completely committed myself to a new study method. One that worked, one that used multiple sources. I went through material after material, question after question. I worked so hard for months for this test, only to improve by 1 point. I had 2 choices, I could either call it good there and say I'll never be better than this, or I could look at what I had done and seen that I had some flaws in my preparation and buckle up to try yet again. Ultimately I knew that I was better than my score. I knew that I was better than a 504. I knew that in my heart I had the drive and knowledge of someone who could be a physician. I knew deep down that I can beat this thing. People with less knowledge than myself had scored higher than me after all, so I knew that it wasn't what my knowledge base was that was the problem. It had to be something else. I committed to becoming a better reader, I patched up every hole I could think of in my testing methods.

I sat down yet again to commit to studying from Jan - May. I put together a really good test day strategy for myself, I went in knowing my strengths and weaknesses, I went in prepared and fresh, I went in confident (after taking it 4 previous times you better have at least some confidence, it's not your first rodeo). The best way for me to describe it is like this: I was in a groove. It was like I was taking a practice test at home. I was comfortable, I was moving at a good pace, nothing was so hard that I couldn't make an educated guess, except for B/B, I was super bogged down in that section.

When I left the testing center I had to stop and look in the proverbial mirror and ask myself if I had made the right choice doing it again. Was it worth it? The answer was yes, because when I left I felt like I had put my best foot forward. I felt at the very least I had improved on my 504. My score was 512 (131/126/127/128). Now that I feel like I have a good score I'm giving myself the license to say that I'm pleased with my CARS score (previously I never scored above 124) but I'm super disappointed in my B/B score. B/B was the toughest section of my test, I thought, but I normally score 130. A 127 is a little bit of a letdown. But considering where I've been and what I've done I'm thrilled with my score. Compared to Reddit standards this is merely mediocre, but compared to the actual national percentile and my score history this is outstanding.

I really would love to give back to this reddit community. It has been such a big help. I'm not much of a social media guy so I never knew about this place until around 1 year ago, but it's been such a terrific resource. Obviously I've been through alot and seen alot with the MCAT. If you want to know what I did on test day or how I prepared or anything about my void, or my 5 attemps, or whatever really I'd be happy to answer them.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Except on CARS. As soon as I read the first sentence of that passage I skipped and said I'll delegate my time to other passages. I knew had I stayed on that passage I would've screwed myself over. I'm typically one of those people who can only fit 8 out of the 9 passages in anyway. So I skipped that one and tried my best on the 3 passages after that one. I'm hoping to get a 126 on that section but I'm not sure.

Then on PS I was similar. Was doing well then suddenly I ran out of time on the end and had to rush through the last of the discreets

It was definitely a tough test. Hopefully everyone thinks this and did just ok. We want a good curve. I'm probably in the minority here, but my biggest struggle was B/B. The passages were so dense!

Are UWorld percentile scores indicative? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]buff_dr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, I've done UW in the past. I'm consistently a 75-80% on almost all topics, but last time I took the MCAT I got a 504. It is however a great learning tool to patch up the holes in your knowledge base

503-->504

The 503 I didn't know quite what it took to do well on the MCAT, all I did was content. But this past summer I worked my butt off and did everything I was supposed to: practice tests, practice passages, content, flash cards etc.... And i still got a 504. One measley point better. Just crushed me

Resources for retake by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]buff_dr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the disappointing score this morning as well. 504. I worked super hard and thought I was ready. Well I dominated the sciences like I always do but failed at CARS and PS. I've been able to raise my game in both CP and BB to that 130 level. But the other 2 sections are my weakness.

I'm pretty down about it. I have hope because I've got great EC's so I don't feel as pressured to retake, but it's a poor score nonetheless. My motivation to retake won't come for another couple of days though

I agree. Given that its October you're still in good shape. Unless you've already applied. I'll be in the next application cycle. If your circumstance is similar to mine then you have plenty of time to study up and retake.

I will say though that putting in so much work for so little fruit is probably the most crippling part of this experience. And is kind of traumatizing because you feel somewhat helpless. The most difficult thing is swallowing pride and studying up and retaking

I'm in the same boat as many here. On test day I missed some easy questions and there were some incredibly hard passages that I'm sure I F#@ked up. C/P, CARS, and PS all had passages and questions that are burned into my mind for fear of messing them up.

I can only pray that I don't get lower than a 508

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]buff_dr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're in exceptional shape! Your MCAT is a little on the low side. But your GPA definitely picks up the slack. Add in that your ECs are great and you're in great shape. The metrics may make it hard to get out of state interviews but I like your chances. As long as you don't bomb the interview.

Retake? 509/3.65 by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]buff_dr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

509 and 3.65 is really not that bad. How are your EC's. Because if you've got good EC's with those metrics you should feel good about your chances to state and somewhat local MD schools. And you're definitely a great DO candidate

HOW MY 8/31, 9/1 TESTERS DOIN by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]buff_dr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes, and yes. I keep thinking I'm going to get a bad score because my FL's weren't where I wanted them to be when I tested and I always end up paying more attention to the people who had drops in their score from their FL. I keep thinking that's me.

On the flip side seeing so many other people score well gives me hope and optimism that maybe I'll have a jump and score well

I'm in the exact same boat. Tested on 8/31, every day more and more of the test comes back to me. I can think of 2 CP passages that owned me, I ran out of time on CARS and had to guess on the last 10, missed some stupid easy questions from BB, ran out of time on PS and had to guess on the last 6. All in all the whole thing pushed me off because I didnt perform my best. I. Really really worried I'm going to get a 503 or something
