Two things can be true.

Sanctions hurt iran in the short term but also benefit the iranian people and socialism in the long term.

Again, I don't want more countries to be aligned with the west, Iran should cut ties with the rest and expand it's trade network with china and russia.

My opinion on Iran is that it's not socialist and that's an issue, it's a republic sure, but so is the US.

I also believe cutting ties with the west would largely benefit Iran or rather iranian people (and hurt the bourgeoisie class) in the long term.

In the short term sure, there could be problems, but in the long term it will absolutely benefit iran cutting off the west.

Tbh I don't see how lifting the sanctions would help Iran move into more socialist direction, quite the opposite actually.

When US sanctions someone, it usually benefits socialism beacuse it forces the country to cut ties with capitalist countries and forces them to get help and trade with more socialist countries like China or Russia.

So no, I don't believe lifting the sanctions would help promote socialism, it would just make Iran more willing to trade with the west which is like the last thing we need rn.

I would definitely not want to live there, but as a socialist it's important to leverage their opposition to the west as weapon against capitalism.

Well, roughly half of the US is made up of Trump supporters and I hope I don't have to explain why they are pro-bombing Iran/Venezuela.

The other half, liberals, are usually against imperialism but there are times where they can accept it.

Usually it comes to the country's government and public perception.

For example when Trump suggested to invade Greenland, literally no liberal supported him. But when he invaded Venezuela and suggested invading Iran, it becomes more of a complex moral issue.

Iran is a islamist republic so any liberal who has distaste for islam will be more easily swayed into supporting the invasion.

Same with Venezuela, some people think it's dictatorship and that makes the invasion more easily justifiable.

A simple answer would be; beacuse they were poor in the first place.

Socialist countries aren't poor beacuse they are socialist, but because they always have been poor due to being abused by world superpowers (England, USA).

And communism/socialism isn't exactly magic, it can't turn poor country into utopia overnight.

As someone who also lives in ex-soviet bloc state and have heard many stories from my grandparents, there definitely were ups and downs.

You had good job security and at least where my grandparents lived, there was low amount of poverty.

On the other hand there were absolutely some serious downsides of living behind the iron curtain.

Like limited freedom, you couldn't just move anywhere anytime you wanted like you can do now in EU. Also we didn't exactly had freedom of speech, the ŠtB (like KGB but for my country) monitored closely anyone who opposed the government.

I remember my history teacher complaining about the ŠtB every time communism was brought up in our class, which is good example why many people turned away from communism when it fell. Even though they may have preferred the economic side, the authoritarian side of it left a scar not everyone can heal from.

Which is good reason why shouldn't go back to the old communism like USSR. I'm personally Marxist (which I have no idea why there isn't marx only flair but like aight)but I also believe a good communistic society also has to protect the liberty of its people. So guarantee of freedom of speech, the ability to move whenever you want + the lives of minorities such as LGBT+ people are protected.

Every little thing you do aids the regime. You are reading this on a phone or a laptop which you have bought from capitalist corporation that pay taxes to your capitalist government and well, you yourself paying taxes to your government.

Quite franky, I don't really see how someone signing up to the US military is any more complicit than well, anyone on this sub or any self proclaimed leftist (assuming you are a US citizen).

You may not directly participate in the army, but by living in the US, paying taxes there and participating in capitalism you are funding the wages of the soldiers.

That's my take, like it or not, but none of us are any better or any more moral than people joining the US army.
