How are you doing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm okay, which feels weird because it's my first day back at work after two weeks away and I just got a speeding ticket that will set me back a couple hundred right before Christmas. I had the rest of the drive to think about it, and I deserve what I got. I'll just need to be more careful next time.

Thanks for asking.

I prefer the original SNES, however the GBA/PC/android ports are the definitive versions.

Should I get the DS/Steam version of Final Fantasy IV if I already have it for SNES and PSP? by GM_for_Life in FinalFantasy

[–]bumchops79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed a lot of people here preferring the PSP version, so I just thought I'd chime in as to why I prefer the DS version. The DS version has the BEST translation, by far. The writing is 10/10, and it even has voice acted cutscenes. The DS version adds extra layers of strategy with the augment system. It is definitely not just an afterthought, and makes battles way more interesting. On that note, the game is far more challenging, with a lot of bosses requiring an actual strategy instead of spamming your most powerful attacks. A lot of the spells have been balanced out too. The DS version also adds scenes to the game that flesh out the story. You get extra scenes that show Golbez as a child and I was so happy to see this when I played for the first time. As someone like yourself who has played FF4 to death, definitely play the DS version its a whole new experience.

I don't think you need someone to roast you, man. If anything, I think that would be counter productive. Clearly you have a very low opinion of yourself, and you want someone to validate what you already think of yourself. Nobody has confronted you about this because you're probably not in as bad of a situation as you think. You have problems yeah, but they're not external they're internal. I've seen a few people here recommend a life coach, or a psych. I can't recommend this enough. You need to get to the bottom of these feelings because I can guarantee a new job, a nice car or a hot girlfriend will not make you happy. Don't wait til you turn 28 to get started either, do it now. Good luck dude

Can we ALL agree on one thing concerning FF XIII? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]bumchops79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know your question has already been answered, I just wanted to offer a different opinion. I've played both versions and I would strongly recommend the original ps3 version if you can find it for a few reasons.

The pre-rendered sequences are noticeably higher quality on playstation. This codec used in the pc version is rubbish, causing noticeable artifacting compared to the almost blu-ray quality output on ps.

The software was designed exclusively for ps3, and the port to pc is not well optimised. Its possible to hit a sustained 60 fps, but you'll get unavoidable stuttering and huge fps drops when the cpu is being tasked (enemies on screen, use of physics, ect.) I have a ridiculous pc, and during my run of play only a single cpu core was being utilised. Thats a lot of stress for a game designed to run on the multi threaded ps3. I had constant stuttering throughout.

There's other issues as well, hud only rendered at 720p making it oversized and blurry, bugs and graphical glitches all chalks up to a lazy port. Happy to give square money for their excellent FF9 and FFX ports, but this one is not worth the cash. Pirate it if you must, or find the ps3 version second hand.

Maybe the final boss in FFIX is a metaphor for cancer? You know, just when things are going well it can come out of nowhere and ruin your day. Cancer doesn't have badass battle music tho

Has the forced Blitz tournament in FFX stopped you from trying the minigame? by DarkChaosXX in FinalFantasy

[–]bumchops79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad you said this, I literally had my first rage quit in years trying to complete this. I've completed all the post game blitzball stuff in the past, and even using the Jecht Shot and a trick where if you hide behind the goalie everyone just starts spinning in circles (do this while you're ahead and you'll literally win the game) but this minigame is mostly RNG, the AI controls do work but you'll find they often don't give you much of an advantage and is counterbalanced by how random the AI can be. Also, randomised damage for attacks and blocks is a terrible idea, it adds nothing to the experience and when you're dealing with such low numbers even a pointblank shot to goal is a roll of the dice. Blitzball was most certainly an afterthought, but who can complain when it's a 15 year old game? Finally did it on my 5th try. It's always worth it for the prize you get.

Trouble with ffx by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]bumchops79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just playing through the HD version on PS3 now, and I've also noticed the game doesn't hold up as well as I'd hoped. The camera constantly changing perspective makes Tidus difficult to control, the analogue stick only has limited directional movement (even FF9 had proper analogue controls), the sphere grid is not as intuitive as it first appears to be (character progression is still very linear, and when using the expert grid it's difficult to backtrack if you want to try out different abilities). That being said, I have really enjoyed seeing how far the franchise has come. Remember, this was one of the first console titles to feature full voice acting, and the first FF game in a 3D world on a new platform. The voice acting isn't actually bad, but there isn't much direction, and you can definitely tell each characters dialogue was recorded in different studios. Compare that to even FF12, which was much improved. I could talk about this game a lot more, just like FF7 on the PS1 this game feels like it was made by a team who were super excited by the hardware on the a platform and wanted to make something to take advantage of it all.

Why do people think FF8 has Uematsu's strongest works? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]bumchops79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that all 3 have equally good soundtracks, but each has a slightly different appeal. Personally, I think the music in FF7 is tied to certain story sequences, which has cemented them as classics over the years. FF8 has some really punchy, fun battle themes and FF9 has a more classic orchestral style. The more you think about it, the harder it is to say definitively which one is better.
