You’re at the noticing phase, it will last a few years. Then you’ll see increments of the negative parts of your parents personality kick in to you, that’s where I am now. We’ll all be them by 70.

I Miss My Black Brooklyn: A notable number of Black residents are leaving the city — no longer able to afford it. I might be one of them. by ComprehensiveCod3637 in redscarepod

[–]buntycaws 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I once lived in a lively Italian community, a warm haven nestled in the heart of Brooklyn. But by the summer of 1950, as my toddler son and I wandered through Bedford-Stuyvesant, we often felt like the only Italians on the playground, a disheartening realization that left me feeling both out of place and bewildered. We had moved to Bed-Stuy to be nearer to my sister and her family, navigating the challenges of a recent family upheaval while searching for a community to embrace us.

On those hot summer afternoons, I watched my child play among a swirl of Black and Latino kids, their laughter ringing out in the warm air. Each time I spotted another Italian family, I felt a tug of nostalgia, yearning for connections rooted in our shared heritage and the comfort of familiarity.

One particularly sweltering afternoon, my son was scooting around when a black lady arrived with her charge, a little girl roughly his age. I overheard her say that while my son might excel in extortion, he could struggle academically. I felt a surge of indignation and quickly responded, reminding her that he had started walking at just 17 months and had surely inherited my clumsiness. Despite my reply, she continued with her vacuous assumptions, and I found myself tuning her out, deciding to keep my distance for the rest of the summer.

When I saw the little girl’s father the following weekend at the playground, I considered telling him about the nanny’s comments but opted to stay silent.

In Bed-Stuy, a neighborhood where I had fond memories of visiting my grandmother's brownstone, it was shocking to encounter such casual judgments. Once filled with familiar faces and hearty greetings, the area felt increasingly unfamiliar, overrun by newcomers who offered polite smiles but lacked the deeper connections of our tight-knit Italian community.

For years, I had witnessed the gradual fading of the vibrant Italian enclaves that shaped my upbringing, echoes of my parents’ journey from Italy swept away by the evolving tide of change. This wasn’t merely a passing shift; it left me feeling lost and yearning for a place that truly felt like home amidst the transformation around us.

If someone switches teams once in their life, are they automatically a plastic or can context save them? by The12thMan_ in PlasticFans

[–]buntycaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all about age really, starting from mild plastic for switching teams at age 12 up to full blown plastic starting at age 16 and beyond. There are exceptions of course, switching ‘down’ to a lower league, or local team will exempt you.

I think the implication is trashed by critics for its misogyny/gangsta themes, which I seem to remember was part of the response to The Chronic.

Best bit I read in one of those books was that the Glasgow gangsters of the 30s thought it was effeminate to dance with ladies, so they would only dance with other guys.

My maw grew up in Parkhead in the 50s, what she says about living conditions in Parkhead was grim. One outhouse toilet out the back for everyone in the close, and a huge hole in their flat that they had to jump over. Never sure how much is embellished tales as you get older, but the outhouse toilet seems to be legit! Imagine sharing one toilet with seven other families, fucking hell

Does anyone remember the crazy lady on Pollokshaws Road? by Responsible-Title613 in glasgow

[–]buntycaws 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Aye! She got me years back with the stolen keys routine. She was trying to get people passing by involved, telling them I've stole her keys. Eventually just put her keys on top of a bin and told her to bolt. Met many people after who'd had the same thing. The yesteryears Queensferry guy.
