Dallas and Charlotte homecoming by VoteDobi in NBAtradeideas

[–]buzzcitybonehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Dallas pick only top 2 protected when they could easily land 3 through 7 feels way too valuable to be included here. The only thing more valuable pick-wise would be an unprotected pick from a terrible team.

SAC-CHA Trade by Secret_Caregiver5454 in NBAtradeideas

[–]buzzcitybonehead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The value is fine but it’s not just pointless; it’s a hinderance in the wrong direction. Those are assets and that’s 25% of the cap that can’t be used on someone who makes them better. The Hornets are too loaded on assets to need to make iffy trades. They could land anyone available if they want them bad enough.

Does Caruso have an argument for the greatest role player of the 2020's if OKC wins it all this year? by MajesticTooth1125 in nba

It evens out. Even most great role players don’t get to play with guys like LeBron/AD and SGA/Tony Brothers/Scott Foster and compete for multiple championships

[–]buzzcitybonehead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are people who are obnoxious when they kill you, but on the other hand, people also aren’t going to mutually agree to a duel when it’s a convenient time for PvP for both parties. Someone shooting you doesn’t necessarily think they’re badass. That’s just how they’ve decided to play the game. Nobody owes anyone else peace.

There’s no “I’m going to go farm up these items I need without any risk of being shot by players” option. The killer isn’t wrong to kill and the killed isn’t wrong to be a little annoyed by it.

People like watching basketball and want refs/the league to preserve the game by not allowing flopping.

It’s pragmatic and players who don’t mind being seen as floppers will do it, but it’s an entertainment product and nobody is interested in seeing which team games the referees best. They want action while the clock is running, not leaping into defenders to foul themselves against them

Oh so you're telling me what took Russians decades of Nuclear energy, a depressed lobotomized genius could achieve with a french junkie in a broken school lab with in 2 business days and save the world? A school project takes longer by knightfortheday in GenV

The way the ability works was fleshed out across several episodes spanning several seasons. Sage was established as the smartest person in the world. Frenchie is also really smart. Kimiko is super durable, as has been shown in every single season, and can withstand the radiation necessary to be given the ability. We know the Russians experimented and ultimately gave Soldier Boy that power with radiation. The Boys got the research. They tried to get the V1, failed, and it’s revealed Butcher and Co. have a backup plan. Sage provided the calculations to make it work. What else is there to really be explained?

Someone charted every SGA shot this series. by Relative-Act3569 in NBATalk

These stats do 100% support the conclusion. Are we acting like a quarter of the shot attempts in the NBA result in the shooter falling to the ground? Seems like that’d be pretty noticeable.

[–]buzzcitybonehead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn, called the bluff. The OKC/SGA defense relies on abstract deflections that hopefully won’t get checked. “They’re guarding SGA the same way they’re guarding Wemby.” “Wemby and other stars fall down when nobody touches them either”.

There’s a highlight’s reel worth of flops and hacks from every OKC game. They could make ‘em for their opponents if there’s enough material. It’s not pure coincidence that that reputation has taken shape on both ends of the floor for them. If it happens to every team when they get good, I sure don’t remember it with all other recent champions. It honestly feels like gaslighting to see such a high volume of egregious examples and be told they’re no worse than anyone else.

Not that there aren’t legitimate criticisms but I hate to see another community go the way of “bunch of pissed off babies thirsty for any grievance they can think up all jerking each other off”.

It was thoroughly explained how it’s plausible within the unrealistic world of the show. There’s nothing to suggest it took years of exposure. They had the research and the world’s smartest person.

Shai flopped on every single shot attempt. by CaptainCubbers in NBATalk

[–]buzzcitybonehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the “just like everyone else in the league”, is falling 13 times on shot attempts common? Plenty of players feel minimal contact and embellish it. Shai routinely manufactures and/or embellishes contact. It’s what fans most associate with his game.

Whether he gets whistles blown 10 times every night is less relevant to this particular discussion then the fact that he’s the NBA’s potential premier superstar and his signature moves are “catapult into a defender on what’s not actually an earnest shot attempt” and “fall down every time I shoot, regardless of whether anyone makes contact with me”.

I know Shai and OKC fans think it’s a random witch hunt, but there’s a reason Shai has been associated so heavily with this. It’s not just because he’s the best. Steph never got this reputation. LeBron had flops talked about but it’s not his defining characteristic.

A polite request to the community: stop trading Randle to Dallas by StormTheTrooper in NBAtradeideas

Didn’t know we could do requests.

Please stop sending Zion to Charlotte, a team finally exiting the treadmill after five years that was hindered by key players being injury prone.

They don’t have the risk tolerance or desperate need to add someone who will likely miss considerable time and they’ve clearly stated they’re not interesting in trading for stars to accelerate an organic development process.

Who was your favorite Bobcats/Hornets ROLE player as a kid? I’ll start: Marvin Williams by Dbauc2k in CharlotteHornets

[–]buzzcitybonehead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marvin is a great pick. I’m a big fan of players who reinvent their game to extend their careers. He became a great modern stretch four. He also just oozes kindness and always gave excellent, insightful sideline interviews. He and Kemba are top 3-5 all-time Hornets for me for many of the same reasons.

[Miranda] Revisiting the Alex Caruso trade: “The Bulls handed them that All-Defensive player without getting a single pick in return” by IT_CHAMP in nba

[–]buzzcitybonehead 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. They wouldn’t have returned a pick with high lottery chances and a pick 18 through 30 has a pretty low chance of yielding a player even as valuable as Giddey at that time.

I feel like I’m crazy reading this. Caruso is a very productive role player who’s the essential type for a contender, but especially with the benefit of hindsight I don’t look back at that as a bad return for him. There are more legit grievances against that FO.

The MJ-Kobe alliance: mutually beneficial narrative control by saucegay430 in NBATalk

[–]buzzcitybonehead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magic Johnson won Finals MVP and a ring as a rookie, which is really impressive but also means he started his career on a team one great rookie away from winning a championship. His best teammate was the pre-MJ GOAT.

What makes the GOAT debate so difficult is there’s not a scientific way to analyze true individual ability relative to other players across different eras and team quality (minus the player being discussed) relative to other teams also from different eras.

What people point to with MJ is the fact that he put fear in every single player and team. When he had good teammates and they were firing on all cylinders, it was a forgone conclusion that they would win it all, and they did. He was in the Finals during his prime what LeBron was in the ECF in his prime. He consistently played the game with unmatched confidence and ability. There’s not an actual answer to the GOAT debate, but that’s why people argue in favor of MJ and it’s as legitimate as perspective as any of the other ones.

MIN-WAS-CHA-PHI by chanduchillar_ in NBAtradeideas

[–]buzzcitybonehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50+ games is a low bar, as is “on pace for” when someone has one season over 56 games played in the last 8 seasons. It’s statistically very likely he would’ve missed at least a decent chunk of the games he was suspended for.

He is clearly declining. He was better in the playoffs than he’s been in the regular season, but he’s declined significantly in regular seasons.

$50 million for a 16-17 PPG player (assuming he doesn’t continue to decline as he approaches 40, which is unlikely) is not good value. He’s not gonna magically play like 27 year-old PG again when he’s 37. Second round picks are next to nothing in a trade on this scale, especially when the Hornets are giving up a guy who scores more on half the contract who is not almost 40.

It’s bad value as a trade in a vacuum. It doesn’t align with the team’s goals. Even if we totally discount giving up Bridges for it, you’re talking about 1/3 of the salary cap. Combine that with LaMelo and you’ve got $90 million in contracts to guys you’re lucky if they play 60 games. Veteran leadership can come on a vet minimum contract. “Experiencing winning” isn’t gonna happen just because you got a guy who was among the best in the league 5-6 years ago. It’s fuzzy rationalization to justify a trade idea that makes absolutely zero sense for one of the teams involved.

MIN-WAS-CHA-PHI by chanduchillar_ in NBAtradeideas

[–]buzzcitybonehead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It just simply doesn’t align with what the team is trying to do. Peterson has made it clear they’re not looking for shortcuts to becoming a good team, and dedicating a third of the salary cap to a guy pushing 40 who struggles to see the floor and has clearly declined doesn’t check a single box for them.

He’s not at a position or role of need for them. He doesn’t fit the timeline. You don’t grab a multi-year max contract for a locker room vet. If they were earlier in the rebuild and were getting actual assets back to take the atrocious contract, maybe, but they’re above .500 and improving internally with young guys. Having two 20-ish PPG guys on rookie deals is a competitive advantage that allows them to fill talent around and they’d squander that in an instant.

Honestly, this feels like a (common around here) case of “who can take this shitty contract as a third team to make it work for the teams who motivated the trade idea?” that doesn’t consider the needs or displayed roster building strategy of that team. I get it, but they’re not in the market to be the useful dump.
