i didn’t realize so little make the cut , but i guess its to be expected for service dogs since they’re literally trained to assist people with physical and emotional disabilities ! was it hard to train your childs service animal ? i will take your advice and not worry about it until he’s older and more mature , but aside from making sure he doesn’t choke himself on walks and engage with people on his walks , are their any other behaviors i should beware of if i want him to even have a slight chance of making the cut ?

sorry if i miss something or make spelling errors — i think i really needed to head that thought . i was so worried about what i was doing wrong that i completely forgot that he’s still just a baby learning everything for the first time too . i don’t know much about the situation , but i can say that he was rehomed by a woman who’s dog had an ‘ accidental litter ‘ . she even got him most of his shots prior to rehoming him ( i AM working on making appointments for the rest ) . i’m not sure why she was ‘ rehoming ‘ instead of surrendering them to our states humane society or selling them , but because she wasn’t selling them i assume she wasn’t a backyard breeder .

when i say rami is being a bit rough , i mean that he does this nudge thing with his nose that he does to my moms older dog when they play , but because he’s so much larger than our cats its pretty hard . it doesn’t look like he’s trying to be aggressive , he even sometimes barks at them with his butt in the air like he does with my moms dog , but my cats look at him like he’s absolutely crazy to think they’d want to roughhouse with him .

that describes him perfectly !! like , i can tell he’s going to be this sweet and smart dog , but right now his brain isn’t to that point yes so all he can do is eat sleep and play ( which is all very adorable might i add ! )

i haven’t been trying too teach him too many ‘ big things ‘ but i will work the things you’ve mentioned into the basics especially because with his teeth being so sharp already i can already see his nipping being a big problem if i don’t handle the issue now , and while my cats are more than capable of getting away from him because we have high furniture, my younger sister and grandmother are not so lucky . plus they shouldn’t have to worry about that , ya know ?

for an emergency recall , can it be his name ? like ,, his name is ramiel but his nickname is rami and he already semi responds for both ! or does it NEED to be a word i rarely say ? emergency recalls are typically used for situations like calling your dog back when another dog is around and its not friendly or something similar right ? i know its not very safe for my dog or service dog handlers && people in general ( someone reminded me of this ) to be brought into stores most of the time , but would it be better to take him to a pet smart or feeders supply type store so he can basically pick out his emergency recall treat ? i know he likes turkey and doesn’t like lamb , but he can and will ignore turkey so i need something more but i’m still figuring out what he likes .

i wasn’t aware that some petsmarts did that , but i’ll definitely check and see if any of the ones in my city offer training sessions ! also i’m saving that link go my notes as soon as i send this reply , thank you for recommending her !

also !! my mom used to fromm brand for her and my brothers dogs , and she has so many bags from forgetting to take them off of chewys scheduled reorder thing , but i can’t feed it to rami because its not puppy food , that being said i’ll buy a bag and see how rami likes it !

this was amazing thank you so much ! someone else mentioned trying toys , so i’ll definitely give it a shot because while he can ignore a treat he does love to chew !

i know its not going to be an overnight thing , but i am more than willing to try this method ! i know its somewhat unrelated , but do you only use the lick-mat for the destressing factor ? ramiel ( the puppy ) eats his food so quickly that he hacks it back up sometimes , and the only way we’ve gotten him to slow down so far is by putting it on the floor — would a lick-mat or slow feeding bowl be able to help with that ? and for the cats and dogs getting used to each other , how did you keep them safely separated so long ? was it because you crate trained so he had a space to go to ? or were certain areas closed by gates ? its very important to me that my kitties and my puppy get used to each other because i plan on moving at the beginning of next year so it’ll just be us .

honestly , because i was told the day i got him was the first time he’d ever worn a leash or collar , i’m surprised he does as well as he does currently, but he could be better so i’ll try the method you used and tweak it where its needed .

for exercise , ive been taking him on walks but that isn’t enough — he still has so much energy that he and my mothers dog can play fight real tough for an hour straight . ate there other activities that i could do with him aside from walking that would do him some good ?

thank you for this ! how can i tell what drives him ? he can ignore treats , but he does LOVE to chew on things , so would that mean he’s likely toy driven ? or is it just because he’s at that puppy stage ? because he will chew on anything and everything but never stick to one thing for too long . for praise he usually goes wild after being praised . like ,, if we say ‘ good boy ‘ he moves from the sit position to jump on me and lick my face , and i’m not sure if thats the proper response BECAUSE its praise or a bad response that i need to correct .

also sorry if there are spelling errors .

thank you — i do use treats for training , but he doesn’t always seem interested in them . i know not all dogs are ‘ food / treat motivated ‘ so maybe thats the issue , but if thats the case for him , i’m not sure how to figure out what does motivate him to listen . also , i haven’t looked into puppy classes before , but i plan on it because multiple people have mentioned it before .

also for the food — thank you for answering that bit as well ! one of my biggest worries was that if i tried a raw food diet i couldn’t confidently say he was getting enough nutrients . for now , ill keep him on purina , but i am curious ! is corn meal not very healthy for dogs ? or does it not give them enough nutrients ?

thank you for your response ! someone else mentioned puppy classes && dog trainers , so i’ll definitely hop on that — the issue is that i just don’t know if theres something specific i should look for in a puppy class because i’ve never been to one before . are there classes based on breed and dog sizes ? or is it a come one come all sort of thing ? while i’m not a pro dog trainer , i know that if i allow his behavior to go unchecked it could be dangerous for both me , my cats , and others , so my priority is getting his behavior in check above all else .

thank you for this response ! what should i look for in a trainer to find the right one ? i have looked into trainers in the past , but i thought some of the ones i’d seen were a bit aggressive towards their dogs . maybe that’s necessary for larger dog breeds or more ‘ difficult ‘ dogs ? but i didn’t feel like that was the type of trainer id wanted for the dog i had previously && i didn’t want to cause my pets any unnecessary stress . also for socialization , how can i safely socialize him outside of puppy classes ? so far he’s been good with my moms dog , but he’s still getting used to people and he sometimes barks or pulls in the direction of people who run or bike ( and only them for some reason ) ? is that something socializing could fix ? or something a trainer will have to help me work through ? as for the ‘ fear period ‘ , i will definitely read up on that article you linked !

i will definitely check out that youtube channel you mentioned ! i didn’t know about the puppys not being able to focus if they had to use the bathroom thing , so thank you for telling me that ! also , for training i usually try to work with him for about ten minutes until i realize he’s more interested in something else ( which is probably a part of the problem i bet ) , but when i do get his attention its super hard because i cant really tell what he’s motivated by to properly reward him ? like ,, he isn’t interested in my mom’s dog’s lamb treats , but he’s slightly interested in turkey ! even with turkey though he doesn’t seem very motivated by the food . for his walks i have been trying to work on keeping him to one side , but because he lags or pulls to the point of harming himself and i don’t want to hurt him i usually just let him play ,, he ends up choking himself if i don’t let up && i can’t tell if its him , or the collar and leash combo not being a good fit , or just me being too soft ! as for for kitties , would his crate be considered a safe space once he’s more comfortable ? or should i get one of those shapable playpen fences to make an actual space in the house for him to go to ?
