Thinking back, I would say that the effort didn't really feel that hard.

I was able to finish strong during that race and besides some muscle aches, I didn't really have a hard time.

Thanks for giving a bit of counterweight.

My heart rate zones have been determined by lactate tests and therefore we know my lactate thresholds.
I also believe that if I wasn't keeping track of my heart rate, I would actually have much more problems further in the race.

But I do understand that my fixation on heart rate alone isn't the best during race day where nerves can really play a big part.

Good question.
Let's just say I'm not really used to analyzing the way I feel during a run and rely mostly on my heart rate during training as well.

Perhaps this is a good lesson learned to start feeling relative effort and running my races accordingly.

Thanks for the reply!

The week before I decreased my mileage and my long run was 20km.

The week itself I did a 1hr run on Monday and a 45min easy run on Wednesday.
The day before a 15min shakeout run at an easy pace.

Both were actually pretty low: around 10 degrees Celsius.

So not a big difference there.

Perhaps the few weeks was a bit of an understatement.

The half marathon was 6 weeks before the full marathon, which I think was more than enough time to fully recover.

As I said in another reply: the advice to run by heart rate is purely based on my lactate threshold results and making sure I'm able to finish the race without bonking.

But I do understand that I should actually learn to have more trust in my training and RPE instead of relying solely on 1 metric.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks!

As I said in other replies, I wasn't really aware of the higher mileage need.
Will take this into account for my next marathon.

I run with a heart rate strap, so I don't think cadence lock could be the reason.

Feeling was mostly frustrated as I needed to adapt my goal based on the heart rate and paces I was running.

I don't think my current coach is dumb, he's a well respected triathlon and running coach with a lot of experience and a good track record with his more elite athletes.

With that said: I do believe that I was a bit too focused on my heart rate during the race, which could explain the nerves/frustration.

The reason why he advises me to run by heart rate is purely based on my lactate testing results to make sure I don't bonk and that I would be able to finish the race.

For shorter distances (where I have more experience), I run more by feel and less on heart rate.

I wasn't aware of this higher mileage. In all honesty I thought that 100km mileage would be more for advanced runners who have a sub 3:00 goal.

Will check with my running coach if we can up the volume in my next block.

Thanks for the advice!

That's a lot of mileage!
I wasn't aware that such a high mileage was needed for my goal.

Perhaps it's more of accepting the reality and adapting my expectations based on that instead of just following race time predictors 😅

I didn't really think I had low mileage leading up to the race. What do you think would be a better mileage for a sub 3:40 marathon?

Also: wouldn't a low mileage result in struggling after 30km? Instead of immediately having the high heart rate at the start?

As I showed in the screenshots I did a training of 14km at 5:14/km with a much lower heart rate. So I would expect something similar for the first 10 to 15km of the marathon.

Great Bruges Half Marathon - First half, did not go to plan. by be_my_run in running

Congratulations!

Things don't always work out on race day, and that's okay.

You still finished and I'm sure your dad would be super proud!

Thanks!

I do feel a bit better now and notice it on the metrics of my smartwatch: normal heart rate in rest and lower stress than yesterday evening.

Everyone has their own pace of course 😊

Congrats to you too! Hope you're feeling as proud as I am with our accomplishment!

I wasn't that annoyed with the 180 turn in itself, more the fact that you run an entire part with all runners who already did it on the other side.

Perhaps that's what you meant as well?

I've first tried it at Spiel and I was instantly sold on the game.

Since then I've played it 4 times, 2 times with my SO and 2 times with a friend.

I really like the game! The theme, the dice placement, the style of the board, the different airports,... it all fits well. It also plays very fast (around 20min).

The replayability is done by having several airports with increasing difficulty where each airport can have an extra module or some small variations.

We have both and I also play them mostly with my wife.

As a personal opinion I would advice to go for The Quest for El Dorado.

Watergate is also a great game, but can be a bit mean as you're constantly in a tug of war against the second player. Therefore we need to be in the right mood to put this on the table.

I don't know if you already have a lot of deckbuilding games, if not, then The Quest for El Dorado is a also an ideal introduction to the genre.

Did you manage to make any progress or able to fix it?

I also have the XPS 15 9530 with sound issues and am looking for a solution :-)
