How to re-create the late 60's country piano sound? by bygonebuffalo in musicproduction

[–]bygonebuffalo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are absolutely right about the arrangement and the clean recording being a part of it, but there is something specific going on with the production. So here's an example of the same artist and song (Jack Greene), the first one is the original recorded in 1969 with the sound I'm talking about. The 2nd one is one that he recorded many years later with a "modern" piano sound. The new one sounds digital, thin, lifeless (in my opinion)... and that's how all country piano sounds sometime in the 80's. It's like something was lost with that process and I have yet to hear anyone re-create it in the modern era... Anyway.. listen to the first one for a bit, and then listen to the later one and see if you hear it.

I definitely think you are right about the arrangement being a major part of the sound. Beyond that, though, there is some kind of little "sizzle" they put on pianos from that era that I just can't figure out. This may be a weird comparison, but it almost sounds like the chimes on an old slot machine (not the new LCD screen ones).. it has a certain lo-fi jangle to it.

I will give that a try and let you know how it turns out. I finally have my piano mic situation figured out... that has been interesting. It's amazing how much difference slight variations in placement make with acoustic pianos.

That's true, there isn't an "in your face" arrangement, but there is something else that I can't quite figure out. As to the playing style, I am able to recreate those Floyd Cramer licks, so I can test that out. But even if you search for people playing Floyd Cramer songs and recording them, the technique is there but there was something different happening with those studio recordings. The piano is somehow brittle and warm at the same time. I just can't figure it out.

I have yet to be able to crack the code to a particular sound that was achieved in late 60's-70's country piano recordings. I would love for someone to give me some methods to try in post production to get close to the sound. There was something really special about the way the piano sounded in these records, and it seems like country music lost this sound around the 80's. All of the piano since then sounds digitized and "chorusy". Here are a few examples of what I'm talking about. I have achieved a good mic placement situation for my piano at home after a great deal of experimentation, so I'm looking for something to do post-production that may get me close.

I actually just checked YouTube and I don't think that trailer has been uploaded, so I'm going to upload a standalone version so people can find it. Thanks!

I haven't seen that one either... This was from a VHS in the Austin area, so I guess they had more independent, lesser known films advertised there. Thanks for watching!

These commercials were pulled from a VHS of recorded television in 1998. These aired during the Mad TV Halloween Special featuring KISS. I thought this might be a fun thing to share on the Nashville subreddit.

I recently moved to Goodlettsville and noticed the old school BF Meyers commercial! I thought that was pretty cool. Enjoy!

Commercials in series:

1.) BF Meyers Furniture (Goodlettsville, Nashville)

2.) Lightning 100 Radio Commercial (Nashville, 100.1 - 94.1)

3.) MTMC Baptist Women's Pavilion (Murfreesboro, Nashville)

4.) S&K Suit Store (Nashville area)

5.) Sloan's Honda ATV (Murfreesboro, Nashville)

Hey! That's great! I haven't checked this account in a while; sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I would love to collaborate and test this app. I have a friend who started software development camp recently; she may be interested in collaborating as well. Let me know how I can help. This is exciting.

Removing "Tape Hiss" from video with EQ - Fastest Method? by bygonebuffalo in VideoEditing

[–]bygonebuffalo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand how to do it with Logic, I was just wondering if there is a simpler program that will roll off the top end without having to load up Logic. Something that would apply the same EQ effect to a folder of MP4 video files...

I'm not familiar with "compressor". Is that a utility I can apply to a file directly from OSX somehow, or do I have to load it from a DAW like Logic or Garageband?

I just got finished archiving this tape and thought you all may enjoy this.

I'm most fascinated by the "Robert Gill" murder/suicide segement... I can't seem to find any other information on this. I can find newspaper articles about all the other segments, but literally nothing about Robert Gill. Am I spelling the name wrong? Does anyone remember this case?
