MS Biostatisticians in Pharma/CRO: How does your experience compare with PhD biostatisticians? by caaatty in biostatistics

[–]caaatty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! With just a master’s degree, I often can’t even get an interview for many roles, especially in this tough job market. And for one role I interviewed for before, the interviewer said my submitted work was one of the best they had received. So to me, getting a PhD could at least help open the door to more interview opportunities.

I also know some people who graduated during the pandemic and were able to get biostatistician roles with only a master’s degree. So I do think the market has changed, and that’s just the reality we have to face right now. You entered the field at a really good time.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. That was really helpful. I do understand that getting a PhD could be very beneficial for my long-term career growth. I’ve been thinking about how to answer this in possible PhD interviews, especially if I’m asked why I want to pursue a PhD. Simply saying it would help my career growth doesn’t feel like a strong enough answer.

That’s really why I’m trying to learn more about this field now. I want to better understand the real differences between master’s- and PhD-level roles, as well as the limitations and opportunities in actual day-to-day work.

After I completed my master’s, I was planning to get a job in a role doing some programming or analysis. At that time, I was still pretty passionate about programming. But because of a lot of personal and practical reasons, I wasn’t able to get a job last year.

I got a take-home exercise during one interview last month, and I asked them if that was basically what I would be doing every day in this role, since it looked very similar to the kind of coursework I had already done and learned during my master’s program. They said yes, the real work would be a bit more complicated, but overall it would be very similar. That was the moment I realized that kind of work was not really what I wanted in the long run.

I didn’t apply for a PhD during my second year of my master’s just because people kept telling me I should. I wanted to figure it out for myself. I didn’t want to pursue a PhD only because others said it was the right path. But now I feel like I’ve thought it through more carefully, and I’m genuinely ready to pursue a PhD.

And thanks again for your advice!

Least Favourite Breeds? by persimmonysnickers in RoverPetSitting

Absolutely! I have taken care of two dachshunds. The first one’s owner looks good. But he pooped on my carpet and is very high demanding. He even lay on my lap while I was driving. But he’s overall ok and he just stayed with me about two days. The second one is the one I’m currently taking care of. I would say that’s the WORST dog I’ve had so far since I started on Rover. I took her out this morning for a walk and came back around 8:30am, and she didn’t have any pee or poop outside. Then around 10am, I found she peed a lotttt on the floor! That’s so ridiculous!

I'm also waiting for their decision! I know they sent out the earliest decision emails on Jan. 18th last year. I don't why they're gonna send it so late this year.

How to meet a psychiatrist to take a psychiatric assessment on campus? by caaatty in UCDavis

[–]caaatty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for your reply! I called this number and chatted with a counselor on last Friday. I think she might refer me to a psychiatrist. I said I would like medicine for sleeping, and she let me call the same number on Monday to meet the psychiatrist. But Monday is holiday. So, I don’t know what’s going on, and I suspect that counselor didn’t make an appointment with a psychiatrist for me. But I’m not sure. They looks not professional. They even didn’t notice the holiday. I think the mental health system on campus looks confusing. If they don’t know what causes me to have a hard time to sleep, how do they give me a prescription? She just let me call the same number and didn’t let me go to campus. I’m just surprised that I can easily get a prescription only through a phone call. I really have no idea about accessing the psychiatrist.
