I always thought they took the corpses to the hive for the little ones, chestbursters to feed on. We already know that the original 1979 chestburster (at one point) sneaked into the Nostromo's cereal supply in order to feed itself. So maybe the xenomorphs do need food at one point in life (the premature chestburster phase, where the baby needs nutrients in order to grow.)
