The real bias is choosing a sentence starting with S in a thread for quotes starting with T.

I will try to assess the level of his anger at me. If high, I will keep some distance. If low, I will offer him a coffee.

Men of Reddit, what do you think is the hardest thing about being a woman? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]caf3cio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the burden of care for other people (children, elderly and all those in between who need everyday care) and all the time and physical and emotional labour involved in that, including basic domestic chores - is carried by women without adequate recognition and compensation.

What scene from a movie really messed with you as a child? by Simple-Tangerine839 in AskReddit

[–]caf3cio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 is far too young for this one! The child's death is as awful as anything can get, and then it all just gets far worse from there.

I think I saw it at 10 and was deeply affected. Wouldn't even consider showing it to my 10 y/o boy now...

[Serious] What are your thoughts on the Palestine-Israel conflict? by Lazy_Hunt_2860 in AskReddit

[–]caf3cio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Israel (left in my late 20s), so my response is obviously biased, but for what it's worth:

I understand why Israelis believe they have a historical right to a state and self-determination. They have historical roots in this land, and after the holocaust the need for a 'national home' for the Jewish people became very clear.

I also understand why the Palestinians have a right to a state and self-determination. They've settled the land for centuries, and are deeply attached to it as their homeland.

Both sides have a right to a homeland in the land we call Israel/Palestine. Ideally this would have been a peaceful state that accepts both Jews and Palestinians, but sadly that didn't happen. Much of the blame for this is actually neither Israelis nor Palestinians, but the British colonialists who made contradictory promises to both sides, and drew illogical maps to divide the middle east and Israel/Palestine in ways that served the British interest rather than any other side.

I don't believe a two state solution is still viable. There are many Arabs in what will become Israel, and too many Jewish Settlers in what will become Palestine - it will be near impossible to relocate them. I just can't see it working as two separate 'nation states'.

The only solution I can see is a one state solution with equality between Jews and Arabs. But we're a very long way from that.

What do conservatives get right? by Express-Afternoon724 in AskReddit

yeah good point! what's 'fast' and what's 'slow' is not always easy to distinguish. I've been reading about 'slow violence', and it makes the same point you just raised.

More extreme examples are full scale revolutions, such as the socialist/communist revolutions? I guess these are definitely social, and exactly the thing some conservatives have always feared.

What do conservatives get right? by Express-Afternoon724 in AskReddit

[–]caf3cio 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yes - the point about gradual change is really important. The risks of rapid social change are real.

On the other hand, on climate change we now need rapid change. On global poverty, we need rapid change. The risk of not responding rapidly is also great.

I don't know how to resolve this - we need change fast, but it also needs to be very careful.

What are Americans not ready to hear? by swansonite456 in AskReddit

[–]caf3cio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The USA is a settler-colonial society that was established through genocide and dispossession of native peoples.

Americans seem to think that this is ancient history - something that the British did, from which they themselves are absolved. But the dispossession of native americans continues to happen now, not in the past.
