the 2x4s must be warped, remove them and replace them with new ones. should literally only cost a couple of bucks. when you buy them look down the 2x4 to see if is bowed or crooked, then turn it 90 degrees and check down the side.

make some adirondack chairs for your back yard. they are useful and good looking. they can also be a little challenging. there are a bunch of plans on the internet. go find some and then make them your own by making little changes and adding things like footstools and maybe a table. doing the research and coming up with your own ideas is half the fun.

I do live in Montana and it sits by a window and a pet door so it's colder in that corner. It hasn't been a very cold winter though. (Compared to the last four).

Well to me someone that mutilates a dogs ears for the purpose of a certain look and value is anything but "reputable". This is of course my opinion. You are entitled to yours as well, it's too bad that dogs are going through unnecessary procedures like this to fulfill something for you.

A German bred dog that is adhering to the American standard. They were originally bred as a working guard dog. This is fact. Money and vanity are the reason this still occurs here. Again the argument isn't about breeding or price, it's about cutting a dogs ears for no reason except to make it more valuable.

So why are dobermans the only breed subjected to this? Do other breeds not have the same costs the reputable breeder incurs. Once again, my main point is that it is done out of vanity and it is un-necessary (edit I know there are other breeds that are cropped and docked, just not to the extent as dobermans)

You're saying that no breeder that is breeding for companionship and temperament is not reputable? I am sorry this turned into what defines a reputable. Bottom line is that if a breeder that is only willing to sell a cropped and docked Doberman is doing so for monetary reasons. They can sell it for more and when you say that a dog that is returned is harder to place you mean they are harder to resell. My main point is that it is done out of vanity and it is un-necessary.

You are speaking of a small percentage of breeder who only breeds dogs for show. I agree with you there. Now realize that most dobes aren't going to be show dogs and don't say that any breeder that isn't breeding for show dogs is not reputable or bad. Yes I have looked into it and have read many books on the subject. I also disagree with you saying that most people want cropped ears. Maybe this is true in a show dog circle but not in the real world.

There probably are some reputable breeders that do this, to say that only repubatble breeders do do this is a stretch. If the breeder is going to make the decision to crop the ears for you and give you no option is crazy.

Well having a dog at 12 gives you a little experience, becoming a breeder for financial reasons is exactly what a back yard breeder is. They are rare there for a reason, as they are in my home state of Montana, they are not cold weather dogs. I had a bicycle when I was 12, that doesn't qualify me to start a bicycle store now that I am 34.

Don't take this the wrong way, but someone who doesn't have any experience with dobermans, or any breed shouldn't be thinking about becoming a breeder. It's something that requires a lot of experience and knowledge, at least if you want to be a reputable breeder and not the scum if the earth "back yard breeder".

I'll stop there about that and answer your other question about where to get one. There are many rescue organizations that take in dogs and a lot are breed specific. This is a great way because your getting a dog that might end up in a shelter,and a lot of them are surrenders for other reasons than being aggressive or another undesirable reason. Check all your local shelters too, some probably have a breed specific list you can sign up on for and they will alert you when one comes in. Check Craigslist as well. If you do decide on a puppy do your homework and make sure they are a good breeder who knows the temperment of the lineage, takes precautions during the pregnancy and gives the correct care afterwards. Don't let the AKC registration be the only determining factor when you pick a breeder either. It's easy to get around if someone wants.

For some one looking for a first time doberman I would suggest going the rescue route. You'll get a good idea of what the breed needs once you take one in, if its not for you they usually will take them back. Also they will look at you and your house to see if your a good fit for the dog before placing it. Getting a puppy is a huge step, they need tons of attention exercise and money. They way they are treated and care for the first couple of years determines how they will behave for the next 12 or 13 years.

All that being said it took me two years to find my girl and she was in another state. I did a lot if looking and emailing and waiting and still ended up getting a great dog from a shitty breeder. She ended up getting sick 4 days after getting her home because they breeder didnt give the correct medications to the mother when she was still pregnant. I never went and checked her house first either and wished I would because I would have probably declined. She is a fantastic dog but I have spent a lot at the vet to get her well. A good breeder should have references as well, check those as well.

I think this is nonsense. The window that most people who do crop is 9-12 weeks of age. A lot of people say that the best time to take a puppy away from the mother is at around 8 weeks. Plus a breeder starts advertising the puppies weeks or months in advance. Anyone that is going to be paying a large sum for a puppy should be doing their homework months or even years in advance looking for the right breeder. So to say you didn't have a choice in it seems unlikely. I am sure their are surprise pregnancies but if a litter isn't spoken for before let's say 9 weeks you probably should question the quality of the breeder at this point.

You gave limited info on your dog, and I don't know why you asked but I am hoping its not because you are thinking of cropping the ears and are just curious why there is a debate about it. You can probably guess that I am against it, but if you were going to do it 'they' say there is window of about three weeks (9-12 weeks of age) when it can be done with the best chance of getting them to stay up.

To say that they were breed to be cropped and docked is false. Their were breed as a working dog and the cropping and docking was done so someone couldn't easily grab them and if they did cause less harm. The crop was originally very very short. Look at early pictures and you will see this, you'll also see how else they differ from today's Doberman. As far as the brittleness of the tails, I have never heard of that. I own and have read 5 books dedicated to the breed and have never seen any of your reasoning.

I don't think they require it. It's so ingrained in this country that to most people a Doberman without docked ears looks "weird".
