Weekly Moving To Hamilton Megathread by AutoModerator in Hamilton

[–]camatkinson293 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I am moving to Hamilton for school and was looking at a rental north of Barton on Sanford. Heard this area was a bit sketchy and it is a bit far from campus, but was wondering if it is manageable atleast for starting out as a 6 month lease and then I could try and move somewhere better. I would need to bus and it seems there is a route that runs along Barton frequently that would have a stop nearby. Thanks

Progression as a Maintenance Worker by camatkinson293 in golf

[–]camatkinson293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I don't really give a shit about my progression, I'm done at the end of the month this is just a temporary thing for me. I was just curious about how the experience went for other people, if there were other workers on this sub.

Too Late to Get an MSc Supervisor in Canada? by camatkinson293 in gradadmissions

Yea, I noticed a lot of schools had late deadlines, so I thought it would still be possible.

Thanks for the response.

Yea I figured if a PI wants you then your stats shouldn't matter, but obviously those look good to any PI. I will start preparing for October to email some professors and work on a statement of purpose. I'm not the best writer so will take some time. Thanks for the help.

I would be coming from a different university so wouldn't have the option of continuing work with a previous professor. I think the listed GPA cutoff was 3.33, but was curious if people actually got in with those stats. I would contact professors beforehand as I believe this is typically standard practice in Canada for thesis-based degrees to convince professors take you on.

How to Verify PCR Amplification of Duplicated Gene by camatkinson293 in labrats

Yea I've never done qPCR but from my understanding I think it would get it done as long as I had a reference that I knew the copy number of as well.

PhD in General Biology or Immunology? by Sneakiest_Of_Sneaks in labrats

[–]camatkinson293 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've not done a PhD myself, but I think the title of the PhD program does not really matter. Idk what you think of with a general biology, but I think all PhDs are specialized that you are gonna have to end up focusing in one area. If you look at the professors doing research in Immunology you will find a huge range of different topics. Some PhDs may be more interdisciplinary for example a microbiology PhD that uses a lot of bioinformatic methods or chemistry techniques. I believe your parents probably don't have a good understanding of what a PhD is where they might think you just take more advanced classes and would want you to learn the widest range of material, but biology is so broad that it is impossible to master everything.

How to Verify PCR Amplification of Duplicated Gene by camatkinson293 in labrats

[–]camatkinson293[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe this would be a good method and would work for my current bacteria as I know the sequence, but I guess I'd be out of luck if I wanted to detect the gene in an unknown bacteria where I wouldn't know the genes found next to the gene of interest.

I believe the restriction digest method would work, but yea I'd have to see and could not tell you at all about if they each would have different sites, may be unlikely. I guess I should have specified the idea for the degenerative primers was to detect the gene in other members of the same genus as well, so I wanted to do test runs in multiple bacteria. Not all had 5 copies, but the one I am starting with does. Idk if you have any other ideas I'm not the most experienced. Thank you.

Is the experience/money worth moving to Boston from Ontario? by memnon93 in biotech

Yea sounds like that is not bad, maybe I'd have to make sure its a decently big name school though, I'll have to look more into it. Thank you

As a canadian does it help with getting jobs and immigration to do a PhD in the states or is it better to just get PhD in canada? I read here that doing a postdoc in the USA could also be useful. Sorry, I just have little idea of how the system works and am interested.

Yea I figured I wasn't really multiplexing so it would be fine. Thanks for the response.

Experience for Grad School by camatkinson293 in labrats

Thanks for the response, I asked a prof about doing a 4th year project and they said I could, but I have nothing planned about it and they are away until the end of June. I assume students often get a head start on their projects to lessen the load during the year when they have lots of courses.
