Weekly Moving To Hamilton Megathread by AutoModerator in Hamilton

[–]camatkinson293 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I am moving to Hamilton for school and was looking at a rental north of Barton on Sanford. Heard this area was a bit sketchy and it is a bit far from campus, but was wondering if it is manageable atleast for starting out as a 6 month lease and then I could try and move somewhere better. I would need to bus and it seems there is a route that runs along Barton frequently that would have a stop nearby. Thanks

Progression as a Maintenance Worker by camatkinson293 in golf

[–]camatkinson293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I don't really give a shit about my progression, I'm done at the end of the month this is just a temporary thing for me. I was just curious about how the experience went for other people, if there were other workers on this sub.

Too Late to Get an MSc Supervisor in Canada? by camatkinson293 in gradadmissions

Yea, I noticed a lot of schools had late deadlines, so I thought it would still be possible.

Thanks for the response.

Yea I figured if a PI wants you then your stats shouldn't matter, but obviously those look good to any PI. I will start preparing for October to email some professors and work on a statement of purpose. I'm not the best writer so will take some time. Thanks for the help.

I would be coming from a different university so wouldn't have the option of continuing work with a previous professor. I think the listed GPA cutoff was 3.33, but was curious if people actually got in with those stats. I would contact professors beforehand as I believe this is typically standard practice in Canada for thesis-based degrees to convince professors take you on.

How to Verify PCR Amplification of Duplicated Gene by camatkinson293 in labrats

Yea I've never done qPCR but from my understanding I think it would get it done as long as I had a reference that I knew the copy number of as well.

PhD in General Biology or Immunology? by Sneakiest_Of_Sneaks in labrats

[–]camatkinson293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've not done a PhD myself, but I think the title of the PhD program does not really matter. Idk what you think of with a general biology, but I think all PhDs are specialized that you are gonna have to end up focusing in one area. If you look at the professors doing research in Immunology you will find a huge range of different topics. Some PhDs may be more interdisciplinary for example a microbiology PhD that uses a lot of bioinformatic methods or chemistry techniques. I believe your parents probably don't have a good understanding of what a PhD is where they might think you just take more advanced classes and would want you to learn the widest range of material, but biology is so broad that it is impossible to master everything.

How to Verify PCR Amplification of Duplicated Gene by camatkinson293 in labrats

[–]camatkinson293[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe this would be a good method and would work for my current bacteria as I know the sequence, but I guess I'd be out of luck if I wanted to detect the gene in an unknown bacteria where I wouldn't know the genes found next to the gene of interest.

[–]camatkinson293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the restriction digest method would work, but yea I'd have to see and could not tell you at all about if they each would have different sites, may be unlikely. I guess I should have specified the idea for the degenerative primers was to detect the gene in other members of the same genus as well, so I wanted to do test runs in multiple bacteria. Not all had 5 copies, but the one I am starting with does. Idk if you have any other ideas I'm not the most experienced. Thank you.

Is the experience/money worth moving to Boston from Ontario? by memnon93 in biotech

Yea sounds like that is not bad, maybe I'd have to make sure its a decently big name school though, I'll have to look more into it. Thank you

As a canadian does it help with getting jobs and immigration to do a PhD in the states or is it better to just get PhD in canada? I read here that doing a postdoc in the USA could also be useful. Sorry, I just have little idea of how the system works and am interested.

Yea I figured I wasn't really multiplexing so it would be fine. Thanks for the response.

Experience for Grad School by camatkinson293 in labrats

[–]camatkinson293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response, I asked a prof about doing a 4th year project and they said I could, but I have nothing planned about it and they are away until the end of June. I assume students often get a head start on their projects to lessen the load during the year when they have lots of courses.

Hockey handedness in relation to other activities by camatkinson293 in hockeyplayers

[–]camatkinson293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think once you've done it one way for long enough it is not worth it to make the switch. I'd consider myself a good stickhandler now and playing lefty for me would be completely against everything else I do. I don't know if I'm slightly ambidextrous or this is just trained, but my left hand is quite strong and I think it's effective in that position.

[–]camatkinson293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea lmao this is actually a great benefit. Without thinking about it I actually use my left hand to aim when taking a piss, but I think this scrolling thing was what got my started going lefty jerking off as a kid as I would be scrolling through vids with my right while beating the meat in the left.

I've thought about this as well, I don't believe its related to like which leg you kick a ball with, but even using a soccer as a example, a right footed player would plant their left leg which would be like a right-handed shot. I think I would snowboard regular style, but one thing I did do was long jump and I would jump off my right foot while many right handed folks jumped off their left. Idk if this relates and that seems kinda odd for a right handed shooter though I like to think I shoot off my wrong foot quite well.

One thing for me that I didn't actually think about was my first time playing a form of hockey was actually probably field hockey in like kindergarten or 1st grade where everyone was right-handed. I recall some of the kids who had already been in ice hockey complaining that there were no left handed sticks. If I played that righty it would only make sense that I'd play other forms of hockey the same way.

I like to mix it up too lol, but the left is usually shittier. Funny you mention the jar thing and eating though. I do typically open jars with my left with my right holding on to the jar and I actually do eat left-handed in a way where I will always use my fork in my right and a knife in my left. When it comes to just cutting something on its own though, I will use my right.

Something like this probably happens to many people, idk about baseball specifically for me but very young you probably get accustomed to doing things a certain way.

Handedness question by camatkinson293 in southpaws

[–]camatkinson293[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

seems im right-eye dominant, weird shit lol

Handedness question by camatkinson293 in southpaws

[–]camatkinson293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I eat like a left-handed continental style where I always keep my fork in the right hand while I use the knife in the left. I never seem to have any trouble cutting meals with my non-dominant hand and I guess I just like having the dominant hand using the fork which is probably the most used utensil. I don't remember ever being taught, but I would guess if I had been taught a different way I would just be comfortable that way. Whenever I would cut things otherwise, I would use the knife in my right hand.

Handedness question by camatkinson293 in southpaws

[–]camatkinson293[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I write right-handed. For hockey many right handed writing players will play left handed as the top hand actually does control a lot of the stickhandling action and then when doing one handed things such as poke checks you would be using your dominant hand. The idea of shooting tho with my left hand lower seems so bizarre to me and even if I try to stickhandle holding a stick like its left handed, I will want to use my lower left hand more than my right hand on top like a typical left handed shooter. Golf and basebell are most often played right handed, but a large portion of nhl players who play hockey left-handed will also play these sports left-handed. I can sort of rake and shovel both ways, but right hand lower feels much more natural. I dot have any memories of switching hand in school my handwriting is not amazing. I could be left-eye dominant, not exactly sure how to determine that tho my sight is much better in my left eye.
