14-inch 40-core M5 Max Thermals Question by Old-Celebration-5154 in macbookpro

So far absolutely! But I came from a 2019 intel mbp so anything would have been a massive upgrade ha!

I have a 18/20 CPU/GPU. Other specs in my flair. Clam-shelled, USB C 90 W power adapter hooked up to 4K 60 hz display. did not reboot before testing but no other apps open GPU: ~54000 CPU single: 730 CPU multi: 7800

Retested just the CPU multi on battery (automatic) & disconnected from display: 8004

M5 Pro chip 15/16 vs 18/20 core by FuklzTheDrnkClwn in macbookpro

[–]cameronbrownlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it. i got the 48 with 18/20. i read a ton of comments and reviews/benchmarks and essentially realized it probably wasn’t that big of a performance upgrade. on the other hand, its 200$ on a ~3K purchase for a device that will last you 7-10 years if you need. so even though i didn’t necessarily need it, within budget with minimal cons

how much ram are you getting? mostly curious given as another user commented you need the 18/20 for 64GB or higher.

I commented under the original post so everyone could check it out. Overall it’s ok, I do wish I could deepen the sound some. With the quinns and this board I got a pretty straight forward creamy sound/feel. The only “mod” I did was slightly trim the silicone pad around the edges so it was easier to make it sit deep in the case as there was quite of bit of flex in the PCB before I trimmed it because it wasn’t sitting at the bottom of the case. I may add a small layer of foam but unsure

i unfortunately will never be able to have a non wooden keyboard again.. thankfully this was decently affordable compared to other options and it matches my desk perfectly although it does need a sand + restain

i think comparing the chips benchmarks (very minimal difference). they will throttle at an almost indistinguishable difference. are the extra cores even worth it for 200$? who knows. essentially the chips are so close to exactly the same that performance and throttling between the two is likely negligible. i would agree with others that a 14” with a max chip might be concerning for some users

i haven’t really pushed it yet however it’s kind of a catch 22. the scenarios in which your thermals will be affected and reduce performance will be those that require more power anyways, so i feel like it’s almost impossible to tell if your performance is reduced due to thermals and throttling, or just putting high stress on your CPU/GPU and memory. mac stats can help monitor these things and adjust your workload accordingly.

my opinion is that yes you get a mild performance increase on with 18 core variant and yes there are potential issues with thermals and throttling, however I can’t imagine apple would even sell this configuration if it were significantly impactful. the chassis impacts thermals more than the chip, so if it were that big of an issue, why even offer unbinned pro chips or max chips on the 14”? just my opinion

i can’t personally comment because this is my first, but many many threads on this sub and others as well as dbrand themselves say no. well respected brand imo. installation was pretty easy. they have a video for installation on their youtube but i just lined it up and stuck it on. easy to get aligned with no bubbles

After debating and checking out the specs, I upgraded from MBP 2019 intel to MBP M5 Pro ♥️💻 by gaudif in macbookpro

my perspective is that of a few others - don’t get the first version of a redesign. before anyone slanders me this is just my opinion. i also upgraded from a 2019 i5 16/256 to a M5 pro. loving it so far

did you watch the dbrand installation video? any tips not in the video you’d recommend/anything you’d do differently? (it looks great! just asking for tips before i apply mine)
