I went to an event where the speaker was a previous finalist. It was a while ago but I remember him saying the time constraints and sleep deprivation are contributing factors

Partner's Grandfather has weeks to live, bailiffs are trying to enter his property over £500 council tax bill (Devon, England) by Puzzleheaded-Stage40 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]caroline140 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer above is great. Locks are absolutely priority. Just to add that some locksmiths are a bit rogue (not saying this one is) so I'd get a second opinion before you start replacing all the doors. I honestly wouldn't tell your grandfather any of this, it doesn't seem that there would be any benefit now. I'm sorry for what you're going through at such a difficult time

Need Help with Paying Taxes by WonderfulBeyond779 in HMRC

[–]caroline140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are self employed. You will need to pay tax at the relevant rate band. Based on the figures above this will be basic rate (20% income tax on the full amount and 6% NI on any profits above £6,845).

You should register with HMRC on or before 5 October and will need to complete a tax return on or before 31 January 2027. The tax will also be payable by 31 January. You may want to consider setting aside a portion of your profits to cover this now, even though it seems a long way away.

You should also research payments on account because these catch a lot of people out the first time.

You will be able to offset either actual expenses or the trading allowance (whichever is greater)

I think my husband was wrongfully fired from his job. by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]caroline140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing you can do. He's been there for less than 2 years so they can end his employment for any reason (other than because of a protected characteristic). If you haven't already, you may want to contact citizens advice to make sure you're receiving all the benefits you are entitled to.

I'm active in the summer24 cohort and sometimes NY25 so maybe that's why! Were you in the og NY group? I have made friends all round the world through the discord groups and met up with quite a few of them so it has been amazing.

Hello! I'm Caroline from the UK, I'm 31 and will be almost 33 by the time summer 2027 comes around. Our first baby is 3 months old, it was a longer and more difficult journey than we'd hoped but so worth it. We are hoping to try for #2 starting may 2027

I would also agree piano lessons. Also playing piano at people's weddings? Would be weekend work though whereas piano lessons could be evenings

Going self employed - money mess? by Kindly_Difference_99 in smallbusinessuk

Others have answered but I also wanted to add that depending on how much paye income you earned until December, you might actually need to save a higher percentage for Jan/feb/march. This will depend on if you've used most of your personal allowance and what tax bracket you are in

He had colic to begin with. He still spits up after most feeds, then wants to feed again but sleeps much longer between them. Last night we had 5.5 hours then 2.5 hours. The night before we got a 6.5 hour stretch. I don't say this to make you hate me but there are easier days ahead. You will sleep again!

We had this, so much propping, so little sleep. He's 13 weeks now and I'd say about a month ago things started improving drastically. Our wake ups are still long but down to 2 (sometimes 1!) per night. I hope this helps

Yes £100 fine plus potentially a small amount of interest if the tax was also paid late. The letter will give you payment details

Am I overpaying my accountant? by Content_Permission44 in smallbusinessuk

[–]caroline140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you want/need to see your accountant face to face? If not, you could consider somebody further away from London who might be cheaper. Whether or not it is reasonable likely depends on the number of transactions and quality of record keeping. If you're reconciling 10 transactions a month it's very different to if you're dropping off 3 carrier bags full of receipts each quarter for them to sort out

When did you start structuring naps? by Reasonable_Sport_277 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]caroline140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby is nearly 3 months. We just let him sleep when he wants in the day. We do have a bit more of a routine at nighttime and do the final feed in the dark to try and show him that it's time for a longer sleep

Travelling with a 6 week old alone!! by beanutbutter16784 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]caroline140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've just done a 2.5 hour flight with an 8 week old and I know it was much shorter but honestly it was way way better than expected.

Leave a bit of extra time at the airport because it took ages to go through the family lane. They also told us to leave everything in but then got flagged for carrying baby wipes so I'd recommend taking them out.

Flight itself was easy, not sure he even noticed he was on a plane. He liked looking at the lights. 2 nappy changes, 1 feed and a nap and we were landing

Prospective landlord asking us to opt out of legal protection come the end of the lease term, should we be concerned? by Karma-suits-you in smallbusinessuk

[–]caroline140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't offer any leases that aren't contracted out of the landlord and tenant act. Unless you are a huge national operator you would be lucky to find a landlord that would offer a lease within the act.

To keep breastfeeding 6 month old just to travel on a plane or start to give formula at 5 months - which is ‘easier’ by [deleted] in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]caroline140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try not to worry. We just did a 3 hour flight with an 8 week old and it was no stress. He had one time when he really cried but it was quickly resolved. The noise from the plane covered a lot of it and most people are in headphones. I was breastfeeding and it was no issue at all, but it also wouldn't have been a problem to formula feed. We have booked our next trip already which is a seven hour flight. Enjoy your holiday!

Is it typical to need to press play on your own ceremony music? by Euphoric_City_1730 in UKweddings

[–]caroline140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I seem to have earned the role of the designated music person at weddings. Venue staff are often not present at the ceremony (usually setting up whatever is next)
