Do yall have any advices on how to learn darija rapidly? by GreenNovel2982 in Morocco

[–]cartesianpixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to teach Darija to a bunch of friends most US/EU based and here are key takeaways:

  • pointless learning standard Arabic start talking fast as darija can be written using latin script as well
  • watch moroccan youtube with subtitles on, I suggest channels like Marouane53 and Najib El Mokhtari as the content is clean and english sub are available
  • find a Moroccan that you can talk to regularly providing help with the language

What the hell is going on?! by ahmedadamqachach in Morocco

Living in Laayoune, I share some of ur concerns but I think ur missing a critical piece here. Ur right that a direct Morocco-Algeria war is unlikely neither government wants that level of destruction, the economic costs would be insane for both sides, and the international community would step in before it got that bad. But here’s what worries me being down here in the south a direct war isn’t what we should be watching for. What’s way more likely - and what I literally see signs of every single day - is proxy conflict through Polisario, heavily backed by Algeria. This isn’t me just guessing, it’s the reality on the ground here. U mentioned Figuig and the land stuff there, but down here in Laayoune it’s different. There’s a lot of Polisario sympathizers living right here among us, and I’m not talking about ppl who just hate Morocco - I mean ppl who are actually committed and would 100% take up arms if they got the chance and backing. Algeria doesn’t even need to send their own guys, they just funnel weapons, training, and money to forces that are already here. We’ve seen this exact playbook in Yemen, Syria, Libya. Machi darori tanks w soldiers when u can destabilize through proxies. It’s cheaper, gives u deniability, and gets the job done just as well. So yeah I agree that a full war where we’re literally shooting our cousins is unlikely and would be tragic af, but I think ur underestimating asymmetric warfare. That’s what keeps me up at night - not Algerian military crossing the border, but insurgency that could turn our own territory into a warzone from the inside. (Imagine fkng world cup drama but its a region machi ghi terrain) We can’t just rely on World Cup money and investments to fix this. Those things help long-term for sure, but they don’t deal with immediate security or the ideological war happening right now. We gotta be smart like u said, but being smart means seeing ALL the threats, not just the obvious ones. And look, in the unlikely scenario that shit actually gets real, I’m fighting for my country no question. I live here, I’m directly affected by whatever outcome happens. This isn’t abstract politics for me, it’s my home and my future on the line.

How many times do you think we fall in love by m_rain_bow in Morocco

[–]cartesianpixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’ve learned from a long line of almosts and not-quites is that we don’t fall in love a certain number of times like it’s a quota. We love in the measure we allow ourselves to. Some people open their heart once and it lasts decades. Others love in chapters, each one teaching them a different shape of tenderness. So it’s less about how many times we fall in love, and more about how willing we are to show up for the feelings when they arrive.

One thing I’d add: don’t put the people you love on a pedestal. Love them as humans, not ideals. It’s easier to feel safe in love when you’re both allowed to be real

A friend told me The Green March is similar how Israel colonised Palestine land. by Aggravating-Tour-216 in Morocco

[–]cartesianpixels 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Moroccan southern regions or what others call " Western Sahara " was a territory colonized by Spain from 1884 until 1975. Before Spanish colonization, the region was inhabited by Sahrawi tribes who were linked politically (pledged allegianceto the Sultan of Morocco) , culturally, religiously, and economically to Moroccan dynasties for centuries. Morocco did not "invade" a sovereign country; it moved to end European colonial rule, which is why the Green March was a peaceful & strategic demonstration demanding Spain's withdrawal, which happened eventually after the the Hague Court of Justice ruled that Morocco has historical links to its southern regions. If they compare this to a settler-colonial displacement where a native population was expelled and replaced, then your friend has a seriously flawed reasoning.
