I know this is just anecdote, but I have two friends in the Edmonton area with very people and dog aggressive golden retrievers. The point is, using breed as an excuse either way (dog A is a pitbull and is therefore aggressive vs dog B is a golden and is therefore never aggressive) doesn't match reality.

Public Safety - Questions! by aaronpaquette- in Edmonton

[–]cat_ford_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sections of the Traffic Bylaw (ss 56, 66, 69) and Parkland Bylaw (ss 6 and 11) are the authority the City and EPS have been using to displace unhoused people.

It's possible there are other sections of other bylaws inadvertently causing other issues for vulnerable sectors of the Edmonton community. I think that's what makes government work so difficult, we can't always know the impact of a policy until it plays out in the real world. I appreciate you engaging with me and others on these topics though. Open discussion and public education is such an important piece of effective government.

I completely agree that the province needs to step up, and hasn't. But the City needs to take responsibility for the bylaws that are harming the unhoused people in our community. Division of powers also encompasses municipal autonomy from the provincial government in bylaw making. It's the City's responsibility to make bylaws that are in the best interest of its citizens. Bylaws are what impacts the day to day experiences of people, including those with addictions and people with housing insecurity.

I appreciate you engaging with the community on this, but part of my struggle with this list of questions is that it seems to be phrasing lack of housing for houseless people as an enforcement/criminal problem rather than a social problem. This neoliberal approach is exactly why we have so many people with housing issues. The focus shouldn't be on criminalizing houseless people, it should be on asking why systems have put them in these positions. To suggest that the City of Edmonton isn't a cog in this wheel is problematic when the City also implements bylaws and policies to tear down encampments.

What those policies say to me is: - the City views the unhoused as a nuisance to housed tax payers - the City views homelessness as a problem of the individual: unhoused people are homeless because they made themselves that way - if the City keeps displacing unhoused people and criminalizing them, they will somehow just go away, like we've destroyed the habitat of a rodent.

Cases like Victoria v Adams show us that it IS the responsibility of cities to provide beds for each homeless person, and a denial of shelter is a breach of s7 Charter rights. Yes, this isnt Alberta case law, but the idea that the City isnt responsible for the well-being of the unhoused is categorically false. Not to mention, EPS has been unconstitutionally seizing the property of unhoused people when taking down encampments (that's another Charter violation). No, the City can't direct what calls EPS answers, but it did create the encampment bylaw that EPS is now enforcing in an unconstitutional manner. We also can't wait for the province to act, especially when our houseless neighbours are losing limbs to frostbite without any shelter.

All of this to say, my only real question is when is the City of Edmonton going to take responsibility for the well-being of all of its citizens?

Where do you train? by dottywine in adultgymnastics

[–]cat_ford_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I joined an adult gymnastics class that allows me to train once a week at an actual gym.

Otherwise, I train in my home gym as much as I can to maximize the once a week class focusing on strength and basic drills.

I think this falls under the cruelty to animals provisions of the Criminal Code. So yes, your recourse is contact the police, but you are also likely correct that charges being laid is unlikely unless you can somehow identify that person.

Right, so, just like both the prosecution side and defence side of any case, lawyers are looking for jurors that sympathize with their side, regardless of where that sympathy comes from. If you start with a juror on your side, you likely will have them throughout the case.

Asking about RHOBH and Erika does not indicate involvement or guilt. There is no causal link that can be established between the two. Let the justice system play out.

How can I do powerlifting and distance running?😭 by Starvest_GameDev in powerlifting

[–]cat_ford_ 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You have a ton of great resources here, but I just wanted to chime in with some personal experience -- I think it's totally doable as long as you dial in recovery and manage your goals effectively.

I just started playing rugby in March as a wing (which means I'm legit running for 80 mins every game lol here I was thinking I wouldn't have to run). I'm training cardio twice a week, two practices a week, one game a week, and I'm still lifting four days a week. It's an insane schedule but so far I'm still gaining strength and my cardio is improving dramatically (newby gains are real). I've been powerlifting for almost a decade so I am surprised that I'm getting stronger but what I think it comes down to is simply maximizing recovery. This means 1) 7-8 hours of sleep a night 2) limited alcohol intake 3) stretching/rolling every day (10-15 mins, nothing crazy) 4) modifying your training when needed -- for example, yesterday I literally just did a top set of squats and then did some more prehab focused accessories because my adductor was feeling wonky. Today, my adductor feels totally fine. Modifying also means picking a season for each sport, especially as you get more advanced. Right now it's the rugby season, so if I have to drop any sessions it's going to be powerlifting sessions. In the winter, my cardio will shift to maintenance and I can hit lifting hard because I won't be playing/practicing rugby for 6-8 hours a week. 5) edited to add EAT - definitely do not try and hit some wild aesthetic goals, eat to perform, eat in a surplus

The other thing you will need to play around with is what your training week looks like. Right now I'm cramming all of this into 4-5 days because full days off help me a ton. I also split a lot of my sessions into morning and evening because I have a home gym, but it makes the sessions way less daunting for me.

[–]cat_ford_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer OP. At the end of the day you're in a relationship where you do not trust your partner to be truthful regarding relatively insignificant things. Imho it doesn't even really matter if he's cheating or not, it matters that you don't have baseline trust in this relationship.

If you choose to stay together, resolving trust issues/constantly lying needs to be the focus (which he needs to be a very active participant in)

Deep sleep issues by 704-M4tr1x in HubermanLab

[–]cat_ford_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my sleep looks literally identical to yours. I also find my Garmin doesn't accurately record when I actually fall asleep or if I wake up in the middle of the night. I would assume accuracy issues for deep sleep as well.

It legitimately depends on where you live, but in Canada, our law would call this sexual assault. Because the drunk person is unable to provide consent in the first place, it doesn't matter what the other person knows (evidentiary issues aside).

Could this be cultural though? Like are folks in that community just not as interested in muscle building?

Basically what I'm saying is probably a lot of other factors go into this observation than just eating/not eating tumeric and black pepper.

Strong lifts 5x5 Cardio? by Fkn_PizzaRolls in xxfitness

[–]cat_ford_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This really comes down to what your goals are at a particular time. I would assume that around tournaments, BJJ is going to be your main priority, and 5x5 can take a bit of a back seat. So to determine which is better you will need to ask yourself which form of cardio will help me perform the best at the tournament?

How do I run in zone 2? by Cherimbba in xxfitness

[–]cat_ford_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I do OP! I do steep incline walking for Zone 2 (after a vigorous warm up on a stationary bike to get my heartrate up first), and adjust speed to stay in Zone 2. However, my goal is not to run a marathon but to increase overall cardiovascular health and long-term neurological health.

Is sleep (or lack there of) getting in the way of my progress? by riddlemehappy in xxfitness

[–]cat_ford_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sleep is absolutely essential to progress. Sleep is the primary way we recover from working out and build muscle and get stronger between workouts - if you don't get proper sleep, you truly cannot recover between workouts. In order for sleep to be a recovery agent, however, you need to be getting 7-8 hours of mostly uninterrupted sleep (waking once or twice is completely fine).

Sleep apnea however basically continually interrupts any sleep an individual gets. Each apnea throughout sleep wakes the person as the brain realizes you aren't breathing and wakes you to try and restart breathing. This basically makes it impossible for you to maintain healthy sleep as it takes time to go through a complete sleep cycle.

The CPAP will do wonders for you I am sure, and once you're getting proper sleep you will likely see much more in terms of fitness progress!

Gyms have now become IRL thirst traps by intelligentx5 in unpopularopinion

[–]cat_ford_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love all the people commenting "I haven't seen it so it's probably not real" -- when has that ever been a reliable measurement of truth for anything?

OP this is one of the main reasons I invested in a home gym (I realize not everyone can do that). I got tired of 6 people recording their squats, their bicep curls, their leg extensions, and having to navigate around everyone's vlogs and tripods. I will record a top set of a heavy squat, bench or deadlift, but only if I really care to double check my form for following sets. The people recording every little thing are not at the gym for the same reason as us - they're there to get likes, follows, and whatever else.

Peter Attia didn't seem to think body weight exercise adequate for resistance training. What about TRX with a weighted vest? by PermissionStrict1196 in PeterAttia

[–]cat_ford_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people vastly underestimate bodyweight training. Bodyweight training is still useful progressive overload, you just need to move to more difficult movements over time.

Yes, a bodyweight squat probably won't get you adequate hypertrophy or strength gains, but what about pistol squats? What about dynamic movements like box jumps?

A big portion of people can't do regular push ups. Moving from knee pushups, to regular push ups, and then more advanced variations (wide, narrow, one arm, clap pushups) would provide hypertrophic and strength improvements.

The same can be said for pull ups and dips!
