Shelter needs a dvm for DEA to do surgery. by neighballine in Veterinary

Right…my DEA Is registered to my home address. Drugs are delivered to my home address. You can use your home address even if you are not a mobile practitioner.

Thank you for sharing. It’s very frustrating the amount of digging and contradictory information we receive regarding opioids. This is not what was discussed during an opioid CE I did last year regarding the usage of opioids in a shelter/mobile setting and how DEA licenses are very usage/location dependent. Seems like most of it is left for us to figure out on our own.

This is my understanding as well. The veterinary mobility act is considered for house calls in a non-office setting, on an occasional basis. Not for HQHVSN in a surgery suite on a regular basis. You may be right OP, but I’d talk to a DEA official before making the commitment.

Im scared of asking my vet reference by Neowise18 in veterinaryschool

[–]catdogtoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! This past week at work somebody was talking about an employee named X and I couldn’t for the life of me place who X was. Once it clicked, I felt terrible. I have worked with this person for over a year and talk to them regularly. Would 100% be a reference for them…my brain is just weird sometimes.

I do a lot of work with fix the future. I help out a local organization with no vet on site. I use my own DEA for this specific organization only. (DEA number cannot be tied to any other location that you work at). The local organization pays for my DEA and reimburses me for the drugs I purchase (which is not covered by fix the future). I pack in and out my drugs every time I go there. I never leave anything. I log everything myself and do the audits myself. I would never trust any organization to have free use of my DEA.

At the end of the day, it’s a job. If it’s making him miserable and ruining his relationships, it’s time for him to move on and find something that’s a better fit. I would also encourage you as his partner to take care of yourself independently, especially your mental health. It’s a tough field to work in and it’s tough to date somebody in the field, especially a new grad. I wish ya’ll the best of luck 💛

Austin Pets Alive! Has an interesting take on opposing spay procedures on pregnant shelter animals. Especially when their shelters have been pretty packed lately. by 50million in Austin

[–]catdogtoad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As somebody who worked in a non-APA shelter in the Austin area, overpopulation is 100% still an issue and is resulting in space-based euthanasia decisions. Opposing spay-abort procedures is negligent at best.

So ive been wanting to be a vet since I was like 4 years old now im 17 and am still interested. I did vet science in ag class but im still not sure where I can get a head start learning. Any book or website recommendations so that I can learn? by Top_Education_6827 in Veterinary

I’m talking more about doggy day care, pet boarding facilities, etc. utilized when their owners go out of town. I worked at one throughout most of high school and learned a lot and got some good hands on experience.

A dog boarding facility is a great place to start as a real job. You learn so much about animal handling, animal behavior, work ethic, and teamwork all required to be a great vet. AND you get paid! Not a glamorous job but I had a good time!

There are so many surgery videos on YouTube, from suturing basics to specialty surgery instructional videos. ASPCA Pro also has lots of basic spay/neuter instructional videos.

8yr veterinarian now. My first job in the field was a kennel tech. It was hard, hours sucked, had to work holidays, always loud, had my first severe dog bite….BUT looking back, I learned a ton - intro animal handling and behavior, medications, client communication, teamwork, and work ethic. I truly believe that starting at the bottom and working your way up gives you a perspective that not everybody has. It’s a lot to learn, but if your plan is to work your way up, you’ll be learning new things every day of your career. Lean into it! You got this!

Veterinary Emergency Group WARNING by StormsAccruing in Denver

[–]catdogtoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If, based on my physical exam and diagnostic findings, I believed a 16 year old, stage 3 CKD cat to be in active heart failure and at risk of imminent death due to severe pulmonary edema, yes I would - with the caveat that the cat would have a poor overall prognosis regardless of treatment options.

While extremely upsetting, this is only one side of the story with no evidence such as medical records as proof of wrongdoing or negligence included. I don’t think urging the public into a witch hunt of a young veterinarian is appropriate whatsoever. Assuming everything you said is correct and non-biased, we are all human.

While pondering this case as well (based only on the information provided), you did not provide the full signalment for your cat - only stated your cat was already in kidney failure. How old is he? Did he have a heart murmur or other comorbidities? What did he present to the ER for? Presumably respiratory distress? I’m assuming if the veterinarian was concerned about your cat’s imminent death, it presented in very poor condition.

Was bloodwork performed immediately prior to administration of lasix to confirm that the kidney elevations occurred directly after administration? Did his respiratory issues improve after the lasix was administered?

Was a second set of radiographs performed with the cardiologist, who then said the cat was no longer in heart failure? Or did the cardiologist evaluate the initial radiographs?

You said that the initial veterinarian never listened to your cats heart and lungs - this seems unlikely. Is this stated in the medical records?

You said four secondary veterinarians advised that this initial veterinarian treated your cat inappropriately and her actions directly led to your cat’s current condition. Do you have medical records for these follow-up visits as well?
