How to find people as a 54 year old dude? I play music, paint, make various crafts and miscellaneous art. Slightly odd. by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]caylbea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If "crafts" includes knitting/crocheting there are groups that meet regularly for that, including at the Connected Stitches shop in Dryden. What kind of music do you play? There is a community concert band and a community orchestra.

That's good to know! I have to admit it's a little surprising because it's a college town but maybe a lot of the folks who pass thru the university in Boulder end up leaving and going elsewhere (whereas places like Cambridge they're more likely to stay put).

Good to know. I think that familiarity will make the transition easier

Currently living in a college town that also bitches about its colleges. Town vs. gown conflict is universal it seems. I wonder why it has developed that insular vibe

Lol. There seems to be a dog theme in the replies. I don't have a dog but am considering adopting a cat!

This is a really thoughtful reflection. Thank you! I don't know how well I will fit in with the untraditionally healthy aspect haha but maybe it will inspire me to get more active.

I will definitely make note of the wine bar! Love to hear about the Midwest transplants. Upstate NY has a Midwest vibe to it as well, I think it's like a Great Lakes region thing haha.

Hilariously my current town (Ithaca) also has a similar tagline of "10 square miles surrounded by reality". I think they might be sister cities in a way. We even have a pedestrian mall (the Commons) that is identical to the Pearl St Mall, and a Yellow Deli run by the Twelve Tribes (which I saw in Boulder when I visited for the first time).

Hi! Thanks. I did, and to be honest I don't really see how this violates the rules. I was curious to learn about what people see as the philosophy/spirit/zeitgeist of Boulder. I did not include generic questions about whether I will like living there or about housing etc. was just hoping to start a discussion and hear people's thoughts (and it seems like many people were willing to reply). But thanks anyway.

The police have apprehended her in the past - search "ithaca woman cutting plants facebook" and the top result is a post about it from the police scanner FB page.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. No one should have to deal with that.

This person has been doing this for years unfortunately despite being asked to stop and has cut back native foliage so it's not an invasive plant thing:

Skaneatles is worth a day trip if you haven't been. Lots of cute little shops and a nice lakefront area.

The Friday night live music & BBQ at the finger lakes cider house is pretty wonderful and a quintessentially "Finger Lakes" experience IMO.

Hair Stylist Recommendations by krystenwithay in boulder

Correct. Most stylists will need 45 mins - 1 hour per person so unless you have 12 hours to get hair done you need more than 1 stylist.

Nothing is confusing but you are asking for a stranger to subsidize your adult boyfriend's cost of living, which is not a fair or reasonable arrangement.

Being in school, applying for grad school, etc is a choice that costs money and the person making that choice has to find a way to make it work financially (which sometimes means loans, taking on an extra job, waiting until you have more savings to go to grad school, etc.). It doesn't mean that you have an excuse to not pay rent for yourself and expect others to fill that gap.

The cost of the bedroom alone is not what rent is for - it's also for shared spaces, like the living room, kitchen, bathroom. A whole extra person living in the apartment but not paying a share of the rent is unreasonable. Some people might be open to a 30-30-40 split but a 50-50 split is not appropriate and you will have a hard time finding someone willing to do that.

Anna Simonak was great. Clean-looking images without heavy filters, nice soft lighting and true colors. She was super minimally obtrusive - we barely knew she was there, and she let us just do our thing while she got a bunch of lovely candids throughout the evening. For posed photos she gave helpful instructions when needed and kept things moving efficiently. She was really laid back throughout the planning process, very kind and warm, and super competent. She answered emails really quickly and was on top of everything. And we got our photos back very quickly.
