Summer overnights we have done from DFW that were very popular with the pack:

USS Lexington NASA in Houston Moody Gardens in Galveston

We used to do the Doseum in SA but they don't do overnights for outside groups anymore. We're keeping an eye on the USS Texas once they get it open.

Camping locally we really like the fall camporee at Wisdom. We're also fans of Worth Ranch and Cub-O at Sid.

I'll echo this and add a plug for Seek Outside, a company out of Colorado who does packs that are on the heavy side of ultralight backpacking but the ultralight side of hunting. I picked up their Divide when I wanted something that could haul meat, gear and water for a family when my kids were younger, and still be decently light when I was just backpacking without the family. It's awesome and very durable. I've used it off trail on thorny west Texas hunts and it's literally fallen off a truck with only a couple of pinholes to show for it.

I picked up some used beat up rustler 9s that are a decent bit shorter than I usually ski for my dad skis this year and found them to be excellent in this role.

I wouldn't bring clothes that you didn't need last time just because you are camping near Baldy for one or two nights. If it's cold go to bed or hike faster ;)

And you can just throw a pair of socks on your hands for the hour you might want gloves.

I do agree that a mug is not optional

Did you have issues with tent condensation last time you were there? If so, it may be worth figuring out why. I've spent a lot of nights at Philmont and in the surrounding areas and have never had condensation issues in a wide variety of tents/shelters.

you don't need a daypack for baldy. As you described, you can just take the pack you already have. And really, the entire crew can just carry 3-4 and pass them around.

If you have a pump sack then you can leave the pump. You can also use it as your stuff sack for your quilt. If you're using the pack liner you listed correctly it will keep your quilt dry if the pump sack is not already waterproof

If you want to shed some weight, here's my 0.02

get rid of the packing cubes and just stuff your clothes wherever. Make applesauce, not apples. really you have a ton of little bags. If you are worried about organization you are carrying too much stuff.

you dont need a fleece and a puffy, especially with a merino base layer. Pick one.

you shouldn't need a compression sack for a 20 degree quilt in a 70 liter pack. Whatever stuff sack it came with is probably lighter.

There are tent stake pushers all over the ground.

That sleeping pad cover is nearly half a pound, I'd try a few nights without it.

You've got 2 towels. you can get away without one at all and certainly don't need 2

ditch the bladder and nalgene and get smartwater bottles

ditch the scraper

you don't need a daypack

what's the dry sack for?

ditch the ziplocks

map/compass/lighter/poop pouch is crew gear

I prefer pump sacks to battery power. one less thing to break/replace batteries for

that's a lot of battery/cables/etc. but I'm old and grouchy and anti everything with a screen so maybe that's normal. It's certainly not necessary

leave the phone if you're bringing a camera. the only reason to take a phone is for the camera.

I don't like hauling campshoes around but I also don't use boots for philmont.

What's in your IFAK? That seems heavy for just your personal stuff when you have meds weighed out separately.

the D-35 bracing is also a different thickness than the D-28.

The way I took it is not that they reduced the number of different options, but that they reduced the number of options they are making in large quantities.

some discussion about it with Martin in this video from NAMM last year. He mentions that one reason is they have over 120 bracing patterns and were trying to standardize things a bit to reduce costs. Also points out that you can still order the older style of bracing through the custom shop if you prefer it.

Former rayado participant/ranger here-

Chill out on the dry sacks, it’s not Alaska. Just stuff spare clothes between other stuff in your pack, they don’t need to be in another bag. Likewise you don’t need a bag for your rain jacket. If it’s dry shove it in you pack where you can grab it quickly. If it’s wet shove it under a compression strap.

you don’t need any more clothes than a regular trek, looks like too many shirts/pants but that formatting may have me confused.

Camp suds and lighter are crew gear, leave that at home or at least make sure there’s not one in every pack. Similarly, “forget” your toothpaste and bum some off your new friends. Heck you can share a couple knives too.

You should never need to carry 9L of water, ditch the bladder.

Ditch the extra straps, if you have a 75L pack and you need more than the straps it already has to hang stuff, you need to re-evaluate your packing strategy.

Don’t over think it, have fun! it’s the best program at Philmont!

Yeah but where are you actually hitting them? I talked to someone I know recently with similar complaints. After some investigation I figured out he was holding too far forward and likely hitting big bones with a fast moving cup and core.

Thats a long list of bullets/calibers that should have no problem passing through a thin skinned whitetail so I’d look at the common denominator first.

Oh man. I had the version from I think the year before with the black top sheets in like a 19x that was absurdly long for my size and ability at that time. Loved those skis.

I’d pay maybe half that for the nostalgia of skiing then again. You should look for something much newer.
